RETURN TO SENDER / ELVIS PRESLEY 🎼🎼🎼

"Return to Sender" is a song by the legendary American singer Elvis Presley (whom the world crowned as the "King of Rock") that was released as a single on January 10, 1962 to promote the soundtrack of his hit movie Girls! Girls! Girls! in which the gummed singer played an innocent middle-class fisherman, good-looking, who liked his "job" and his ultimate dream was to have a boat of his own.

There was never any doubt that Elvis was a better singer than he was an actor. But the only way to get more out of all the media, in order to promote both artistic careers, was to make movies with simple plots where the artist appears as a humble young man, with "bad business luck" and who also had in his arms the most beautiful women of his town.

These movies also had another purpose up their sleeves, which was to promote Elvis new songs on the big screen. So people who could not see him live or who were far away from the United States were satisfied with watching him dance in theaters and how he conquered the girls with his sensual dance steps.

For Girls! Girls! Girls! Elvis once again enlisted American composer Otis Blackwell to write a song for the soundtrack of his new film. Blackwell had been the maker of the megahits "Don't Be Cruel" and "All Shook Up" and as a result had the artist's full confidence.

The task set by Elvis was not very easy for Blackwell, who could not find good ideas to compose a new song that would fit the style that Elvis wanted to show in his tape. For that, he decided to ask for help to Winfield Scott, who sang in the group The Cues and who became respected in the music scene after composing the popular song "Tweedle De" that made the blues singer LaVern Baker famous.

Blackwell and Scott worked and worked until "white smoke" came out and showed Presley two phenomenal songs: one was called "We're Comin' In Loaded" and the other was "Return To Sender".

This last song fit right in with Elvis' character, since it was about a boy, who after ending his relationship with his girlfriend, decides to send her letters with beautiful phrases so that she forgives him.

But this boy was very, very desperate, because all the letters he sent were returned with different reasons. That the address was unknown, that the person no longer existed and he couldn't believe it and out of desperation he kept sending letters like a madman in love. He could not understand that love had died between the two of them.

The song was the musical jewel of the tape and when it was released as a single, it sold very quickly reaching first place on the UK Singles Charts and second place on the Billboard and fifth place on the R&B charts. But that wasn't all, as Elvis smiled for the cameras as he learned that "Return To Sender" went Platinum after selling close to 1 million copies in the United States.
