Let's travel to the East today,

with a recording artist born in Sarajevo (former Yugoslavia, now Bosnia and Herzegovina) bringing the real sound of the Balkans to the rest of the world. I was lucky enough to see him perform in France a few years back!

A bit more about it:

Goran Bregović is a Yugoslav recording artist. He is one of the most internationally known modern musicians and composers of the Slavic-speaking countries in the Balkans, and is one of the few former Yugoslav musicians who has performed at major international venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall and L'Olympia.

Among his better known film scores are three of Emir Kusturica's films (Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream, and Underground). For Time of the Gypsies, Bregović won a Golden Arena Award at the Pula Film Festival in 1990, among other awards. He had also composed for the Academy Award-nominated film La Reine Margot and the Cannes-entered film The Serpent's Kiss.

Bregović, during his five-decade long career, has composed for critically acclaimed singers, including Sezen Aksu, Kayah, Iggy Pop, Šaban Bajramović, George Dalaras and Cesária Évora.

Silence of the Balkans is a live Goran Bregović album recorded in Thessaloniki, Greece on December 30, 1997. Bregović's performance was part of that city's final showcase as the 1997 European Capital of Culture.

t's called the 'Silence of the Balkans' but actually is the record of the sounds, the rhythm and the breath of the Balkans and Georgia, but in different interpretation. A train leaves from the old railway station of Munich and by passing all Balkan countries, stops in various cities and arrives in Thessaloniki. The last train stop, Thessaloniki, is also the last stop of the Cultural Capital of Europe, Thessaloniki 1997.
