The Fourth Day of Halloween - Three Tune Tuesday

avatar

Welcome to the Fourth Day of Halloween, otherwise known as October 4! Today is the First Three Tune Tuesday (#ttt) of the Halloween season, and I plan to celebrate accordingly.

My prior 2022 Halloween entries:

I had twelve songs lined up for all four #TTT's in October, and I was happy with them until I found some additional songs in my collection that would work well, too. So now I'm picking and choosing. However, all songs today have a definite inspiration in Halloween.

Gems from "Jack O'Lantern", 1917

This is a Victor Light Opera group song and part of their "Gems From" series of records. Victor (the company) would take the music from operas and musicals and create a medley from them that could fit onto one side of a 78rpm record. These records could only hold 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 minutes of music per side, so they had to be precise about how they medley'ed.

I can find no information about the source of this medley. I want to think that it tells the story of the Jack O'Lantern, but I could also be way off. Regardless, the name of the song carries with it a definite Halloween inspiration.

An Operatic Nightmare, 1916

My oldest song this week, this is another medley from other songs. Performed by Felix Arndt, the piano does doubletime here.

Old Man Jazz, 1920

The All Star Trio is definitely one of my favourite groups from the era; consisting of a saxophone, piano, and xylophone, they traveled the country in a car from venue to venue. They were one of the more popular groups of the day and are estimated to have about a dozen "Top 20" hits before such a thing was actually measured.

This is one of my favourite songs, too. The name has nothing to do with Halloween at all, but wait till you listen to the music. And it's only three acoustic instruments!

Next week will have three more awesome Halloween inspired tunes!

Hi @wwwiebe! I really admire the work you do, because it keeps alive the memory of the early days of the recording industry, which is invaluable. I'm surprised about the 78 RPM vinyls, I think I have one of these in my collection (I have to check), which was not mine but my grandmother's.

These songs that you share today are great, it is super interesting to take a look at the past of music. A big hug.

Thank you for the kind words! I love these old records and songs; they're like memories of ghosts gone by but are still full of music and emotion. You should definitely browse through your collection; you'll probably find at least one wonderful gem in there.

Thanks for stopping by!

Seeing your posts motivated me to do just that, to get my old record collection out of the trunk. Thanks to you I was motivated to do it. I hope you continue sharing this great music. Have a nice day.

Another trio of nostalgic tunes that allow me to close my eyes and imagine what it was like in my grand parents and great grand-parents times...
