Three Tune Tuesday - January 31 Edition

It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.

I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.

Yep, it's Wednesday, which is the day I post for Three Tune Tuesday. On Tuesday's I play the songs live on my livestream at noon EDT. Come have a listen if you want to hear them on Tuesday! https://blindskeleton.one/radio. The same website also hosts the podcast of the same livestream!

This week's songs were all inspired in part by @tengolotodo. In a recent post of his - this one, in fact - he mentioned an old Scottish song recorded in 1911 and wondered if I happened to have a copy of it. As it turns out, I do! A wee Deoch an' Doris by Sir Harry Lauder, recorded on the Victor Records purple label, of all things.

The purple label was intended to be Victor's line of records that were for classical enthusiasts without quite being "Red Seal" quality. This song is all about the good times of having one last drink in the pub with one's friends after a hard day's work.

Hunting that record down from my library got me to thinking about some other "world music" type songs I might have. It seemed like a fitting segue into some music I wouldn't normally think to play. I ended up finding Moonlight in Greenwood by, get this, the Royal Serbian Tambouritza Orchestra. How awesome is that!

Moonlight in Greenwood was recorded on Columbia Phonograph's green label. Their green label was reserved specifically for "ethnic" recordings. I have a few of these; last year I shared a Polish song, as well.

I could not find much in the way of information about either this song or the orchestra, other than a *tambouritza *being a traditional stringed instrument played primarily in Serbia.

My final song of the week brings closure to the "global and wordly" view of my music choices this week. Swiss Echo Song is a traditional Swiss song sung in a "call and answer" nature. The intent of the song is to help the listener visualise the beauty of the Swiss countryside.

What makes this particular recording so interesting from a "world" perspective is that it is sung by an Italian, in Italian, and recorded in the United States.

Three Tune Tuesday (TTT) is initiated by @ablaze.

I run a live stream of my TTT songs every Tuesday at 12:00pm EDT, then take that stream and share the songs from it here, on Hive, on Wednesday (or occasionally Thursday). These songs are all old pre-1923 78rpm records from my collection, played on my antique phonographs and recorded with a well placed microphone. Like what you hear? Come listen live!
