Buddhist practice and the simile of scooping water

This is a profound teaching on detachment and emptiness related to Buddhist practise and the simile of scooping water.

In the "Diamond Sutra," it is said that "while striving to save all sentient beings, there are no beings to be saved."

Regarding spiritual practice, Venerable Fatzang used a metaphor to describe it:

Imagine that one is sitting in a boat on a lake, continuously scooping water from the left side of the boat and pouring it onto the right side. The overall volume of the lake doesn't change because of this action. This is similar to all the tasks we undertake in our spiritual practices, such as paying homage to the Buddha, doing charitable deeds, meditating, and observing precepts. Even though the process might seem strenuous and even tiring, these practices neither add to our intrinsic nature nor reduce our karmic hindrances. In the universe, there is neither an additional Buddha created nor a sentient being diminished.

Very difficult to remain centered and calm at the moment. The fire in Maui and people’ sufferings were too bad to be true. There’s so much sadness and sufferings in this world. Nothing is permanent!

I just recited Om Mani Pe Me Hung at least 108 times. I pray that that the suffering in Maui due to the fire and other causes will be lightened by Bodhisattva Avakotishavara.

How wonderful! That’s a great consolation and help to those suffering people. I am sorry I wasn’t calm enough to think straight and be creative instead of being in sadness.

Greetings dear stranger @mituoshizhe,
The wisdom contained in his story reminded me of a tale about the infinity of the Creator, comparing it to the immensity of the ocean and the effort of a child on the beach trying to fill a hole in the sand by pouring buckets of water. Neither the well was filled, nor the sea diminished.
