Costly Conveniences, Jay

Comfort and convenience. I enjoy having those two things—making my life stress-less and as smooth as it can be. Peace of mind is paramount. But then, when that "paramount peace of mind" doesn't exactly bring peace to my pockets, how is that truly what it is? Hmmm...

When I am done with this post and a couple of other things I have planned for this morning, I will feel like I haven't eaten for seven days and seven nights. What I would likely do when I get back home from this bar is to buy some food for breakfast.

Rather than prepare lunch so I would have something to eat, I would feel relaxed and then not bother. The cycle continues, and I end up spending more and more on restaurant food. And my cooker would only get to work when I need some warm coffee.

I am often occupied with one thing or another, and then I get so carried away by those things and do not pay much attention to my diet, and that makes me spend more because I'd rather let someone else do it and I'd pay. But how long do I really want to keep that up? Surely, I get tired of eating the same things every now and then. The solution isn't far, not at all.

Earlier this year, I said to myself that I was going to fix that, and a couple of weeks before then, and even weeks before that also. But here we are again. I realise I sure have turned it into a habit, and you know what they say about habits: it creeps in when you're not looking (being mindful) and builds itself a home. One has to be deliberate and mindful to curb it.

So yes, a lot of my money goes to food that I buy. It's not so hard to fix, really. The market is just a couple of kilometres away, and I could get just what I need to cook my favourite dishes, and that would save me a whole lot of money and even allow me to eat more of what I want than "what's available." Maybe I should start by closing my eyes every time I pass these restaurants. Or maybe make time to plan ahead and also do the needful when necessary. You get?

Speaking of pocket drainers, I should mention how much I spend on random snacks and drinks. I mean, there is a reason why I buy some of them, though. You see, it is sometimes because of my need to use electricity.

For the reason that I usually charge at bars, I just can't sit here without actually buying anything. So what I do is ask for simple things that I can take. Most ot the time, I am usually taking malt drinks.

It's not exactly a great drink to take every now and then—that's what I think, at least—but it is basically my ticket in. And it helps me beat the heat, too. The heatwave has been a menace lately. Since I get to use electricity with it, I don't think much about it. The only alternative is to go to less convenient places, and I am not exactly interested in that most of the time.

But then, even if I am not at the bar to use electricity, I buy things spontaneously sometimes, just to keep my mouth dancing. When I put cost of these things together, I might as well have aready bought the PC I have been saving up for by now.

I fear that I may have given the impression that I am a foodie by now. That was not the intention. What I mean to say is that I am not that big of a spender, but at the same time, some of my expenses are unnecessary and "fixable." I should prepare my own dishes myself when I really can to spend less at restaurants and be more mindful with my expenses.

Yes that's a good plan to avoid waste of your hard earned money. Plan ahead and cook something substantial that can feed you twice.

I have a feeling that you cook at least 10 different dishes every week. Isn't that so, Becky?

Sometimes you become addicted to these types of street foods and it is very difficult to get rid of them just for the reason that it is easier, faster and you can continue with your day-to-day activities. Without a doubt at the end of the week you think and realize all the money that is spent and it could be a great market and that has also happened to me. But you have to think and do things well in order to obtain good results.

Yes, man. You have to evaluate these things at the end of the day and determine what's worth it or not. I think that many of my expenses aren't necessary when I look at them keenly. I just got used to must of them.

What's something that you think you could spend less on?

You could buy food for the whole week and from time to time go out to those places.

I believe cooking is cheaper than buying foods outside and though it's more convenient, it tells more on our pockets.

Eating out is not a thing for me. I'm almost always careful of my gastrointestinal tract and wary of processed meals

Doctor Musa. Of course, you'd usually consider how it affects your insides. I, on the other hand, think about it less. But if course, it takes a toll on my pockets.

Just like you, when it is exam period I don't think so much about food, but when I do I spend so much on eating out, snacks just to save me time so I can study more. Save me time, but my pocket feels it 😫

If it's exams, bro, I definitely wouldn't be cooking much. I'd rather save that time to do read. It's to na resume cooking that would be the issue afterwards.
