Just Another Day In The Desert [A Foggy Morning Walk]

Crazy Weather

It's a dreary day in Abu Dhabi today, with dust lingering in the air and lowering visibility as I type. Dust or sandstorm in the Emirates normally indicates a change of weather to be expected. It's too early for warmer days, so I'd love to presume that we can expect the temperature to dip lower in the days ahead.

However, this post won't be about today, but of last Thursday. Next to the news of getting rain (yes, it's big news for us), a blanket of fog is something that gets people bringing out their cameras to take snaps and videos.

Thursday Morning

I was supposed to get on the road a bit earlier last Thursday. It's not really "too early", but around 7-ish. The first thing I noticed when I looked outside was the blanket of fog surrounding the buildings.

"It's going to be a tough drive again," I thought.

The visibility is down to a few meters and the air is too moist, you would think it's drizzling too

Here's what it looked like around our neighborhood last Thursday at around 7am.

For context, here's how it looked the previous evening just a few minutes after sunset at around 6pm. Even at dusk, you would see the tall buildings from downtown.

The World Trade Center, Abu Dhabi can be spotted in the middle of the photo.

Here's from another angle with a car incoming, headlights on.

My attempt at some "artistic" shots.

My car was parked across the road so I had some chance to take some photographs along the way. These were all taken through my smartphone.

A lamp at the outdoor seating area of a coffee shop.

As I approached the main road the pavements were wet, almost like it just rained. The fog was too thick you could almost not see what's on the other side.

Droplets of water formed at the tips of the leaves.

I had to cross the road through this footbridge. Yay, this looks like it was from a scene from an apocalypse movie.

What's at the other side?

This one's not a great shot, but I'd like to share how the road looked like from the footbridge. Visibility was so low, you won't see the traffic light just a few meters ahead of this.

You can refer to this photo below I took at the same spot the night before. The pile up at the right side of the road is where the traffic light is.

As we drove towards the downtown city center, the fog had started to dissipate but it was still thick when I drove back to my place, barely 5 kilometers away.

The weather called for a nice cup of chai karak, milk tea that is famous here in the Emirates.

Hot chai karak in the comfort of my car.

It was already almost 9am and the fog was still thick. People delighted themselves by taking photos. Some who live in highrise towers were even able to share photos of the fog covering the whole city.

Oh well, it was just another day in the desert.

Life goes on.

Now, back to work!

Hope you enjoyed the photos, much as I enjoyed taking them. These were all taken via my Huawei Nova 3.
