Blue-Tailed Skink - Lizards of Japan
Japan, the land of... lizards??
Back when I lived in Indiana in the US, I didn't see many skinks around. Every now and then I'd run into someone who had one or a few as a pet, but even that wasn't often.
But here in Japan I see them all the time! I run across one hanging out in the roadside gutter at least once a week in summer.
This photo represents the only blue-tailed skink I've come across, though. The internet tells me they are native to Australia so I suppose that means someone had it as a pet here and it got loose.
It seems like when they are young their tails are a very vibrant blue, but that color fades as they age. This one I found must have been a young one.
Yet another reason to always have our cameras with us when we go out. Never know what you'll run into out there.

We currently have I be as a 'pet' right now! One of the cats thought it was a toy so we are rehabilitating it😜
haha yes, save the poor guy from the cat!
Sometimes I turn over a rock and see something much like that.

Tha'ts so cute. We have skinks here, not blue tailed ones though. Doesn't seem a very good survival strategy. Unless they drop those tails - maybe it's a sign to 'take the tail, don't take the head' !
I'm not sure what the evolutionary advantage to the tail would be either... Maybe it is meant to scare predators who might take the strong color to mean it's poisonous.
