Butterfly World

Most likely the majority of Hive users would say they love butterflies, although not many are posting about these interesting creatures. I like them, can't say I don't, but I'm not a huge fan of them. Those colorful wings with wonderful patterns are nice to look at, but you won't see me running around at the pasture, to catch them. Besides, they are not a huge fan of cities, you rarely see one or two, let alone have the chance to photograph them.

When I was in elementary school, we had different tasks to complete, among which was to create a herbarium, in which we had to have different plants, mostly herbs. This meant collecting them ourselves, drying them and keeping them safe in the herbrium. My cousin had different tasks, such as collect butterflies and different bugs in a box. She went out with my granddad to catch those and I was happy we didn't have to do that. Collecting and drying plants is one thing, but catching and pinning butterflies in a box is a totally different (unpleasant) task.

When I stepped into this room an the natural science museum and saw the butterflies, all those memories came back to me.

20240228_120351a.jpg

These creatures may look nice, but that's not why they exist. They are part of the ecosystem and have their role.

butterflies are good for the environment. Several animals, including small mammals, birds, and other insects, depend on butterflies for food at different phases of their lives. Aphids are (plant) pests; however, several species of butterflies help to manage them by eating them. By regulating animal and insect populations, they perform a crucial role. Butterflies are typically abundant during specific periods of the year. As a result, they play a significant role in several species’ food chains. In many habitats, butterflies serve as pollinators and food for many other plants and animals. source

20240228_120425a.jpg

The offer at the museum was not a vast one, but they had some very interesting ones I've never seen before. I tried to take some close-up photos, hoping to get some decent ones as well.

20240228_120433a.jpg

Most likely this is the only way of having such a close look at them. In the wild, they may stop for a few seconds, maybe you can take a few shots, but nothing is guaranteed.

20240228_120442a.jpg

Looking at those colorful and textured wings, I'd say these are real beauties.

20240228_120456(0)a.jpg

But, without those lovely wings, they are just insects and not nice ones. But then again, are there nice insects? As I haven't seen any nice ones :)

20240228_120501a.jpg

Look at those colors and pattern. I could imagine a dress like that, with a yellow-brown top and the bottom like the big wings. You know what's interesting? You don't see colors that don't match. I mean you see people wearing awful colors all the time, every single day, but not animals or insects. Am I wrong? If I am, show me an example.

20240228_120511a.jpg

This one was quite ugly. I don't see it as a butterfly, but if they say it is one, then it is a butterfly.

20240228_120526a.jpg

20240228_120533a.jpg

20240228_120538a.jpg

It happens quite often, but I think it's normal to think about how you would draw these wings on paper, or paint it with watercolor. The other thing I think of quite often, when I see a nice pattern is fabric.

20240228_120538a1.jpg

Look at that pattern and the wrinkles. I can see a nice silk blouse with that pattern. Am I the only crazy one here? Please say I'm not 😂

20240228_120553a.jpg

Here's the list of exotic insects. Have a look, see if you recognize any. I have zero knowledge of these, so ...

Looking at these beautiful creatures, makes me think of what it means to own one, or more. Some see these as collectibles and collect them as others collect stamps or coins. Are they valuable? Of course they are and the rule apply here too. The more rare, the more valuable.

Having these displayed in the museum can help a lot of people, like it helped me to learn about them, but would I be able to catch them? Nope.

This collection was quite small, but valuable nevertheless. I saw a bigger one in another museum two years ago.

This is it for today people, let me know which one is your favorite, if you have one.

Wao! Butterfly number 47 looks like it is made of paper. Impressive how many varieties there are 😯 🙌

You're right, some look like made of paper. Nature is funny sometimes.

Another interesting post to expand our knowledge. Several rare species in that exhibit, difficult to appreciate in the wild.

You are not crazy at all!!! I too thought of fabric, dresses, skirts and anything with those patterns and colors. 😆🥰

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking of fabric when I see these patterns. I think every woman would do hat. Or not? 😁

Wow!... What an impressive collection!... And you have taken excellent photos of them friend @erikah... Ah, number 31 is a species called by us "Machaca" (Fulgora laternaria) or also "Little Caiman" ("caimancito" in spanish)!... My maternal grandfather said that this butterfly "stinged" people and they had to have sexual relations (yes, that's how I'm saying it) within 24 hours otherwise they would die due to the bite... There is a crazy legend of our rural properties! :))... This is not true, but here some people still believe that this is how it happens... Unfortunately, that species "Machaca" is now very rarely seen here, I suppose due to climate change... Thank you for sharing this excellent content friend @erikah!

Thank you my friend, I did what I could, but you know, it's never easy when you're dealing with glass and the setup is given and you can't change it.

Wow, that legend is ... indeed crazy 😁 I don't want to ask if you've been stinged and if you have obeyed the rule 😂

Thanks for the nice comment and sorry for the late reply. Have a lovely weekend my dear friend!!

Hahaha... No friend @Erikah, I have never been bitten by a "Machaca" and I assume that this has not happened to anyone, because according to what I have read, they do not bite :)... But here in the town there are stories (as is usual in these small towns) that young boys used to tell their fiancées "I've been bitten by the Machaca" and the very suspicious girls answered them: "If you haven't died tomorrow, I'll believe you" hahaha... What a response!... Many commitments were broken due to this trick!...😂😂

Have a great week my friend!!!

I like #41 which is titanacris albines according to the legend you supplied 🙂 interesting about how insects always color coordinated 🤔 I think I like #41 because of the purple color. Not enough purple in the world if you ask me, at least not in the natural world.

Now that you mention, apart from some birds and butterflies, maybe some insects, we don't have anything purple that is moving. Am I wrong? 🤔

Yes, it's indeed mesmerizing to witness the breathtaking beauty of butterflies, especially when admiring the diverse colors adorning their wings. However, it's disheartening to witness their capture by certain individuals for experimentation or exhibition, solely for the purpose of showcasing their allure. Such practices appear highly inhumane to me. I agree with what you said that they are part of the ecosystem, hence, I earnestly hope for an end to the practice of capturing butterflies.

Experimentation is a must, otherwise you won't get anywhere, science can't evolve. Capturing and killing them for run is a different matter.

😁 Lots of bugs here, but bugs definitely exotic... I'm going to make a herbarium. You know, I've never done one, not even in school.
I have a butterfly farm here at home, it's tiny. Only one day I put a caterpillar inside but I don't know what happened, I didn't see the transformation or it dried up... no idea. 🙁

They are all so gorgeous! :)

I'm always amazed by butterflies. They are very beautiful and amazing creatures. But what's interesting is that once it was just a caterpillar that wasn't looked at at all, it then transformed into a beautiful magnificent butterfly that was adored by many people. What a wonderful!

Most likely people would not find them so lovely after watching the whole transformation :)

0

True, because the transformation process is not easy and requires time and is a long process. I think this is like a reflection too, I'm just thinking, because most people don't see how people proceed before they achieve their achievements or success.
It doesn't instantly become that wonderful and beautiful, and people sometimes forget that transformation process.

Thanks for sharing post @erikah :)

You won't believe I was just scrolling up and down just to look at the butterflies. Oh, my God! This is the first time I've seen these kinds of butterflies!
Some of them are simply amazing.
Thanks for the great pictures.
Indeed, in nature, it is unlikely that anyone will be able to see them so closely and even photograph them so well.
And their wings also reminded me of delicate silk or some other exquisite material.
