Bangkok Temple: Wat Chana Songkhram

After having spent a very great time in Santi Chai Prakan Park on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok enjoying the Pavilion and the Phra Sumen fort in company of our friend the squirrel (see my previous post), we left in the direction of the Wat Chana Songkhram temple which is also in the district of Phra Nakhon.

NB: "Wat" means temple in Thai, so when you see it in the name of a place, you'll know what it is 😉 (like places that end with "-ji" in japan).

Bonus: The Thai name of Bangkok is the longest city name in the world with: กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุทธยา มหาดิลกภพ นพรัตนราชธานีบุรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์มหาสถาน อมรพิมานอวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยะวิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์ which means: The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn (often summarized as the City of Angels).

The Wat Chana Songkhram (วัดชนะสงครามราชวรมหาวิหาร in thai which means Temple of Victory in War) is an old monastery built before Bangkok became the capital city (around 15th or 16th Century).

In the grounds of the temple there is a statue of King Taksin the Great (during the short life of the kingdom of Thonburi before the kingdom of Siam).

It took us very little time (about ten minutes) to get there from the park. Unlucky, a good part of it is under renovation but that didn't stop us from enjoying this really wonderful place.

The Wat Chana Songkhram really impresses with all its imposing constructions! I'm really happy with my choice of Phra Nakhon district for our day in Bangkok while waiting for our flight back to Phuket the next day.
