Aswan, Egypt (7 pics) - Part 2 - nearby must see
The region of Nubia is split between Egypt and Sudan and was the home to several empires through history.
It was once the seat of one of the earliest civilizations of ancient Africa but now, it is only small villages along the Nile.
Rather abandoned, most houses don't have roof or proper floor, but we can still see vestiges of better times on some of them.
When we took a feluca to a Nubian village on Elephantine island, We thought it would be a more touristic area but in fact, we where in a more authentic Nubian village.
It was not what we've expected.
We loved it!
Everywhere you go in Egypt, if you are close to the Nile, you will see fellucas.
A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat that can be use to relax or just cross the river.
This is what you need to use to see there more isolated site.
Aswan is a desertic city south of Cairo.
Here you can see Saint Simeon Monastery that was built by a monk during the 7th century.
There are only ruins to visit but since it is not a well know tourist attraction, you can have the site to yourself and this is priceless in that region.
Here are a mausoleum and more ruins on the Nile bank on the hill.
It is easy to cross the river and visit this site and be almost sure to be alone.
I love to have an entire historic site to myself.
One can only imagine what that site looked like when it was erected.
I would loved to have a time machine to see it.
Being in the presence of a real Egyptian sarcophagus is really cool.
Used to bury leaders and wealthy residents in ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece, it is a piece of art and a piece of history that contains a corps.
