The cat in the hat mural

The cat in the hat mural

Continuing on my exploring the streets of New Bedford for street art I cam across this mural on Acushnet Ave near Coffin Street by Artist Ryan McFee

Its an awkward one to get shots of as often cars are parked in front of it and these arent the best of the shots but i wanted to share them anyways as I do remember fondly reading Dr Seuss books to my kids

Little did I know at the time back 30 plus years ago, that I would be living not to far from where the author of these books was Born

Dr. Seuss — born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904 —- have been translated into dozens of languages as well as in braille and are sold in more than 100 countries. He died in 1991.

I loved his books and so did my kids
I read recently that that Dr Seuess Enterprises listened and took feedback from our audiences including teachers, academics and specialists in the field as part of our review process. We then worked with a panel of experts, including educators, and decided to stop publishing six of his books because of racist and or insensitive imagery.
The books removed are And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, If I Ran the Zoo, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra, Scrambled Eggs Super, and The Cat’s Quizzer.

Now I cant say I remember those books, but I do remember the Cat in the Hat, and hence why I had to get shots of this Mural, Green Eggs and Ham, Fox in socks and I am sure there were a few others and I don't remember anything insensitive in them but then again those ones were not removed

I must admit I am kind of intrigued to read a couple that were banned just to get my own take on if I feel they are racist of insensitive.
Now I am all against books or Movies' or anything that is clearly racist or insensitive, but I sometimes feel it is being taken to far, with people taking things to the extreme.

Halmost at the end of the post and photos and I haven't even mentioned the Mural, I think its cool with the Cat in the Hat, who I find whenever i see something like this it makes me smile, surrounded by books and cool art, maybe a mural such as this would inspire someone to go and pick up a book to read.

It's like I'm seeing a real book by your images. I haven't heard about this author, even so, it caught my interest when you said as well that one of his books was banned. What's content might be on it?

This article explains the books that were removed https://apnews.com/article/dr-seuss-books-racist-images-d8ed18335c03319d72f443594c174513
here is a couple of examples they mention
In “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” an Asian person is portrayed wearing a conical hat, holding chopsticks, and eating from a bowl. “If I Ran the Zoo” includes a drawing of two bare-footed African men wearing what appear to be grass skirts with their hair tied above their heads.

That is pretty cool! Although I don't read too much myself, I certainly understand the importance of books! I remember reading the books as a child myself. Great stuff.

These look so cool - I didn't know the author Dr. Seuss but I know The Grinch (the movie ;) and that's great :)

Before my eyes got bad and I started to fall asleep after reading just a few lines, I loved to read Stephen King, and I think I have got every single book of him.

!BEER and !WINE - both make a nice dinner with !PIZZA :)

New Bedford, there must be lots of street art.
This is the third that you have shown.
The artist who painted this was a Latin American?

Isn't this such a cool mural??!!! That is such a wonderful piece to come across! I absolutely adore Dr. Suess and read them to my kids when they were young. There was something so happy and positive about his books. The rhyming and timing of his words were always such fun for all of us. He was as unique as his stories. I was surprised when they pulled his books, I have never read anything of his that I considered off-color or racist, but, I am not familiar with those books either. Thank you so much for sharing this! I miss New England!

Portuguese! That area and outside of Boston have many people of Portuguese descent. Latin Americans must be newer, most of the Spanish people years ago were from Puerto Rico.

Yes indeed I see a lot of Portuguese and Puerto Rican signage and flags on cars around here

But I think when whaling was so big here it drew people from far and wide

If one engages he gets !ENGAGE 25 from me
