RE: Market Friday and Boarding a Horse

That Henry is a likely looking colt.

I'm a strictly Western type of rider. In fact, I'm basically cowboy taught.

Over the years I've had friends that owned (and mostly boarded) horses. I never see them unless there is a 'less than vet grade' problem. I do know how to file clean and trim hooves. When I was a kid we almost never shod our horses. Maybe once a year in the fall for roundup. Maybe.

My dad had a fancy mare (half quarter half thoroughbred) that had split a hoof (caught in a roll of barbed wire) that had to be carefully tended her whole life. He'd gotten her for near nothing because of the hoof but she dropped a couple of great foals and was an honest to god 5 gated horse. In spite of the hoof she was his favorite, and he rode her lots. The stud colt she dropped was a blanketed Appaloosa. He turned out to be real popular for the guy that bought him.

Thanks for a great post about something most of us never think about. I do have to say that a couple of those horses are living in fancier digs than I do...

Henry is such a spunky little guy! He makes good company with the others and I agree that many people take on full boarding if they don't have to pay much for it (much being relative in my book)Most of the people I know go for full board, but, what is the fun in owning a horse if the only involvement is riding when you have time? You miss out on one of the best bonding experiences ever! Shoeing is expensive so I am glad the one is made for that.

In San Antonio, where I lived for a short time, Retama Park was a race track and when a real winner came up lame, they sold them for breeding. Oh, the good blood that came out of some of them. I adore riding a 5 gaited horse! I love that wonky 5th gait! I know just how your dad feels. He probably took good care of her and she knew he favored her. You know how animals are. They can feel it. That sixth sense and all.

I still have the house and barns that you first saw them in, but, it is not right here, so I board right now. Here was the gang when Henry was younger. It was sent to me by a neighbor that saw them running like a herd. :) Thanks for stopping by. You always leave such awesome comments!

#MarketFriday loves you!
