Grapes to Glass Tour at the Bull Run Winery: Market Friday: Part One

avatar

Take in the beauty of the rolling vineyards, framed in by the distinct fences surrounding the Bull Run Winery, that which is located in Fairfax County, Virginia, 20 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. The Winery is adjacent to the Manassas National Battlefield Park, where you can walk through American history as you learn about the backstory on the vineyard. Who doesn't dream of strolling through a plantation of grape-bearing vines, grown for the sole purpose of winemaking?

IMG_1437MF.JPG

There are over 300 vineyards in the State of Virginia which happens to be in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic region of the US. Surprisingly, even to me, Virginia is the first recorded in our country's history to grow grapes for the wine industry. Upon arriving in Jamestown settlement. English colonists found wild grapevines growing profusely, so in 1608, they made wine with native scuppernong grapes.

IMG_1554MF.JPG

The American Civil War made this area famous, or more likely infamous. It is steeped in history, having the First and Second Battles of Manassas on its soil. There were other places that have had Cilvil War battles such as Gettysburg, Fredericksburg and Appomattox to name a few, and I have even taken you to some. The entire state of Virginia has the dubious distinction of having the most battles fought during the Civil War. And, yes! This is #MarketFriday! So glad you could come!

Say hello to Jean! She is our tour guide in the Grape to Glass tour. She takes us from the growing vine and through the whole process of planting, growing, harvesting and finally crushing the grapes. We will see the different stages of how things work at the vineyard. You will be given a engraved glass to take with you so you can do a tasting of the different wines.

First off, Jean is going to show us how to do a wine tasting. No lie! I can see we look totally inexperienced. Before we leave, we will be looking a step up towards a wine connoisseur, even if our actual knowledge is not quite there. How much do you know about wine?

IMG_1396MF.JPG

This is what they call a split-rail fence, log fence, zig zag fence, worm fence, or snake fence depending on where it built. It always confused me because they were always referred by different names. Now I know - and you do too. Can you see beyond the fences? There are grape vines, as far as you can see!

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive. Show me what you have this week!

IMG_1397MF.JPG

I know this is off topic and not even close to a market, however, it is informational and I now I personally learned a little something. Did you know you could learn all about building fences in four minutes? Now, I am pretty sure @papa-pepper, a mighty fine prepper, could show them a thing or two. @justinparke could possibly be in need for one of these, but, his are more likely to be built better. Which leaves me a @buckaroobaby, one never knows if they have more animals than fence. Blink once and the livestock multiply. Here you go, Tracey! This fence is for you!

I freely admit that I am impressed. I think I want to build a fence for something. Tell the truth, don't you?

IMG_1409MF.JPG

Everything about this place make for a beautiful, historical setting. Rustic charm and elegant all in the same breath. The surrounding landscape feels natural, just like nature planted it.

IMG_1400MF1.JPG

Established in 2012 as a scenic working farm vineyard, The Winery at Bull Run lies on 225 acres adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park and next door to an equestrian farm. The winery itself was built to represent the two types of historic barns in Northern Virginia—a smaller 1800s-style barn and a larger 1920s-era dairy barn complete with a hayloft and hay lift cable and beam. Their passion for the history of the land led them to create the largest working farm in Fairfax County and to salvage the old stone foundation of the Hillwood Mansion, burned in a fire some 30 years ago—now a perfect altar and elevated stage for outdoor wedding ceremonies and events.

~The Winery at Bull Run: About Us

IMG_1402MF.JPG

Part of the charm for me are things like this painting on the side of a barn at the Bull Run Winery, There is no end to the details here, this is one of the barns built, creating the largest working farm in Fairfax County.

IMG_1403MF.JPG

The outdoor crush pad! If you are at all familiar with vineyards, this is a term you are familiar with. It is where the grapes meet their fate. Harvested or picked grapes are put in to be processed. Winemakers or days gone by did crush the grapes. They still use this dated term, perhaps more as a tribute to this time in the history of winemaking. Crushing time is coming soon. We are almost at harvest time!

IMG_1441MF.JPG

Our tour guide, Jean picks some grapes and gives us a little bit of history on them. They are of a variety called Norton and the entire vineyard is planted in them. As a matter of fact, all of their vineyards have 100% Virginia grapes. This grape was originally cultivated in Richmond, Virginia in the early 1800s by Dr. Daniel Norton, who named it after himself. The Norton grape is America's oldest native grape. During Prohibition, all of America's vineyards suffered and died, only to be revived years later. I don't think Virginia had any left, but, in 1976, there was a resurgence and they started all over again, in the Charlottesville area.

IMG_1442.JPG

The roses are beautiful! Everyone wants to know why they are planted at the end of the rows. Roses are planted here and in many vineyards because they make an excellent alarm system. They are an early warning system, so to speak. If something like aphids or fungus is present, it will get on the roses first and in time, the grapes. It is like a canary in a coal mine.

When oxen and horses were used in the field, having the roses deterred them from cutting the turns too sharp, no animal was fond of the thorns, so they were beautiful and useful. Still, they were a pretty sight, even if they did do a great side hustle.

IMG_1450MF.JPG

The Hillwood Mansion ruins, circa 1800s. A fire in the 1990s burned down the mansion, and the foundation was salvaged, the stone ruins stabilized to create a wonderful outside space, keeping the historical feel to it. Many weddings have used this space to create their dreams.

IMG_1587MF.JPG

The nose of the Norton immediately brings to mind thoughts of the winter holidays, with scents of pine, mulling spice, mace cooking spice, nutmeg, and cloves. The mid-palate features flavors of dark cherries, bramble fruit and dried berries, with a hint of minced meat pie on the back palate. The 2018 Norton is blended with 20% Merlot wine for a full mid-palate and medium-long finish. Please see website for most recent vintage.* This was the official description given from Bull Run Winery.

Shown below is the 2021 Estate Rosé. With fragrances of fresh strawberries, cream, and shortbread on the nose, this rosé exudes vibrancy. Bright cranberry, strawberry and red currant drive the palate. Crisp acidity and a full-mouth feel give this wine an enjoyable finish. This is also their official description of the taste. I admit, I love going to the wine tastings, where they teach you to taste, explain how to train your palate to taste. It is actually quite fun. I intend to learn how to do this well.

IMG_1545MF.JPG

Fun fact:. In 1774, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Peyton Randolph and George Mason were among the thirty-seven original subscribers of American’s first wine company - The Virginia Wine Co. source

Center Crest.png

The view of the vineyard, courtesy of some great drone work and editing. Nice shots of the cush pad and the barrel room. Spoiler alert for part two,

Truth be told, all of the vineyards that I have gone to in Virginia trend towards artisanal wines and breathtaking landscape. It is written in the stars. It is a must, I believe. Landscaped creatively, it makes it a joy to wander around, enjoy the views, the wine and being educated in the fine art of wine tasting.

IMG_1538MF.JPG

Walls of stone, roses and the beauty of the surrounding nature. It never gets old for me. Each tree that was planted, each flower that was blooming, the stone walls, fences... each seemed to have grown in a spot that was made for them.

IMG_1594MF.JPG

I had so many pictures, it was hard to pick just a few. There is so much that I split it in two, so next week will give a more intimate look on the process and the inside of the winery. I hope you enjoyed walking about with me, I had a great time and as much wine as I drink, learned a lot of new things.

From grapes to glass! A route I like a lot. More history than wine, a heavy and dense history that requires, at least for me, a deeper reading. A theme I didn't expect.
Wine culture is almost becoming an art and a tour like this one you went through I think is fascinating, as is a good glass of wine. It also teaches us which wine is good, often other than what we usually drink!
I need to re-read for places and history, now I'm rushing to send my link, hoping I manage to be the first.

I have written about the sea again, I keep repeating myself but I hope there is something new, another perspective of a repeated trip to the same places.

Summer Is Ending...

Have a nice and easy weekend!

True. Perhaps more wine next week than history. :) Wine is an art, you are right! It was a very fascinating tour and I didn't explain enough about it, but the tour was a very interesting and informative one.

You were the first and I already went to see you tonight. You did not repeat yourself and you know I love when you write about the sea.

It is always a pleasure! Thanks for reading and dropping the link~

I'm waiting for part two and with the location on the map (#pinmapple).
I replied late again, I'm working on house repairs, basically preparing for cold weather and possible lack of gas for heating.

Another match! Now as I write, on Sunday, I will go to our friends who live in a village near Bucharest and we will make wine (artisanal methods, as all peasants in Romania and other Balkan countries do.

I love that snippet about the roses. Multiple uses!

Wine tastings are fab, I am trying to get time to go to one soon at my local good wine shop

Isn't that interesting? Aphids can be a real problem, so that is handy-dandy. In this area of the country, you have to watch out for mildew, which is weird as we don't get an overabundance of rain.

I am all about multiple-use items.

Wine tastings are fun! Part two will cover the tasting of the vino! Normally they do 4-6. We got 8! It was pure heaven. I hope you go to your wine tasting soon! We have 300 vineyards/winerys in the state. There is a wine trail that you can follow. :) Fun game!

Thanks for stopping in and leaving your words.

I plant nasturtiums in my garden to attract Sophia and a particular small black beetle. They absolutely cover the stems of some which appear to save others. Tis handy!

I saw that huge number of em. You are quite lucky to have the climate to suit the growing. Hopefully lots of them do the tastings!

They all do tastings! I think I will be busy for the rest of my life. Maybe longer. It is definitely a good state that way. Mountains, Ocean, Capitol of the country and steeped in History.

And then the climate. Bonus!!

That is really handy with the nasturtiums! I had never heard of that! That is very handy!

It is good to have a life long hobby that you will never tire of!

I found it out by accident with them. I was growing them for their flowers and the leaves for salads and the like and one day I noticed that the stalks were thick with black aphid looking things. So thick I thought the stalks had actually turned black. Then obviously I screamed when I touched a stalk with my hands and there were a million bugs. Since then I have planted them all over!

OMG!!! I have dreams like that, except I am awake!

Then obviously I screamed

I think only a moron wouldn't!!!! I mean millions of bugs!!! No lie! I would have a yard full of them. I did not know that about the nasturtiums. I really like them too.

I know what I need next year!!!

Thank you, Boomie! @meesterboom

You will be given a engraved glass to take with you so you can do a tasting of the different wines

I love this part.

Using roses as bait is brilliant and sure will be alarming.

I don't have any knowledge about wines, this is a lot.

I know, right?? I loved that glass! We even got to take it home with us, so now I have a new wine glass that has the name of the vineyard engraved in it.

The roses are amazing, aren't they? I loved that part too!!

This indeed is a fascinating and exciting tour into history and of course winery. I'd never know the function of the roses there if I didn't read it here. That's very interesting to know.

Isn't that? It really is kind of cool, both the history and the different functions of things. The roses I have seen with something else, but, the history of this site, the Civil War Battlefield, and even the growing of grapes in Virginia.

Truly fascinating. Thank you so much! Next week, part 2!

It's an amazing art - winemaking.

I loved on a wine farm briefly and the winemaker shared his process with me just after harvest.

It's like having a small child or baby! He was up at all hours checking on the temperature and whatever in the early days... something else and who knew?

I did not get around to my #marketfriday post. Yet! This week was just too hectic here with homeschool, work, home admin and all that. And I have something planned and don't want it rushed so... next week then!

Happy #marketfriday !!! 😁

No worries! I understand. I homeschooled too and having three kids, it wasn't always easy. Family first always.

I know about winemaking and honestly, it is a game of hurry up and wait! They have the patience of Saints. In the end, the product is hopefully a winner.

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your words.

How much do you know about wine?

Honestly? Almost nothing. I rarely even taste it. Today I have not tasted it either. I am not much a fan of alcohol drinks. I very rarely drink alcohol.

Today I celebrated my upcoming 30th birthday earlier.

This is my entry for the #MarketFriday today:

Happy Birthday to you!!! (almost!)

Thank you.

I hope you do something special that day!

Probably being used to live in another village is something special. A little bit bigger village. Approximately there are 200 people lives in the village I currently live. The population in the other village, where I will move is around 1400 and 1500 people.

How is the hunt for living space going?

If everything will go according to our plans, then I will go to live with my brother in the weekend. He lives in a nearby village, which is approximately 14 km (approximately 8.69 miles) away.

What a beautiful #marketfriday post #dswigle. Everything on that wine farm looks stunning, and to have healthy rose bushes growing in between the rows of the vineyard is so special!
I've been to wine and coffee farms and found both fascinating, we just don't realize how much work goes into the making of a glass of wine or a good coffee! The bonus is getting to test taste and getting a little taste of farm life at the same time!
I'm hoping to join this week - it's just gone midday here ;)

Thank you, Lizelle! @lizelle Sorry I am so tardy for my own challenge! Life! Life! Can you believe those beautiful rose bushes have an ulterior motive? A do gooder job!

The only coffee farms I went to were in Columbia, South America from the mountains of Narino, some of the finest espresso I have tasted at a coffee tasting. And the work? Absolutely! You are so right about that. You know I am never a stickler for joining the challenge!

I am so bad about joining in much, that I stopped letting the deadlines be my weekly crisis. I am feeling much better now. I either had to shelve mine that I have done for five years or hope people don't get mad at me. I still haven't decided which is the right way, but, for now. I am chilling!

You are way more amazing than I could ever be!!!! You are awesome, woman!

Thank you for your constant support and !LUV ❤️

I didn't know either until I did the post. I have been to a few tastings and not always wine. Sometimes Mead, sometimes Cider... but, this was wine as I was pretty interested in seeing a small Virginia vineyard.

I love that he was able to purchase this all-but abandoned estate less than 12 years ago and made it into a success, using the Battle of Bull Run to his advantage. To be fair, the family are huge history buffs and have ties to the first British to land here. They are a super nice family and I am happy to see their success. They kept all the history, and fences and rebuilt the barns in the exact likeness of what was there.

Kept the foundation of the estate and use it as a platform for weddings, and is hugely popular.

Thank you so much for reading the post and for supporting the challenge!

Beautiful pictures! This looks like a really cool place! My wife and I did a wine tour in the lower peninsula a couple of years ago. We eventually decided that we are not really wine people. The brewery we stopped at for our last stop was more our speed! It was fun to go to all the places and see what they had to offer. I like the fact that many wine places are offering cider now too. That is more my speed. All that being said, I'd still visit this place just because it looks so cool.

It was a pretty cool place and with over 300 vineyards in Virginia, I think you could ride the Wine Tour Road forever!

I have been to a few tastings and not always wine. Sometimes Mead, sometimes Cider... but, this was wine as I was pretty interested in seeing a small Virginia vineyard. It really isn't always about the wine, but, with the drinking I see in some of the places, you wouldn't know it.

Of course, I went up to Wigle Whiskey and hard liquor has the same going on. There will always be people of excess, no matter what it is. Even food, although you won't lose control of your faculties with eating.

I love that the owner was able to purchase the all-but abandoned estate less than 12 years ago and made it into a success, using the Battle of Bull Run to his advantage. First logistics used in fence building, further use during war time informative. In Scotland the stone walls are moved one stone at a time at a specific spot to temporarily open for animals to move to new pastures. Stone walls always appear sturdy additional character to a region.

'Canary in the mine' situation, using rose bushes to warn farmers, Oh so clever!

Starting to learn wine tasting, one needs lifetime membership to enter any wine farm, in any region throughout the world.... each will be a unique experience.

It was kind of interesting. I didn't understand just how useful they were in creating a strategy. I found that most of the fences I was used to were covered in the video, probably because the State of Virginia had the most Civil War Battles and battlegrounds in the US, so the history is in our faces 24/7.

I grew up in New England and stone walls were our fences. I was surprised to find out that the world didn't use this method. :) I am fascinated by the stone-moving method in Scotland. They did it in New England and now, probably not anymore, probably went to the wooden/metal gate. I do prefer the old stone walls.

I thought the canary was clever too!!

Starting to learn wine tasting, one needs lifetime membership to enter any wine farm,

Do you mean you have to join a club? Or that you will be sucked in for life?? I didn't have to join anything, I was gifted the wine tasting for two and you can literally walk up without reservations now as the summer season just closed down without Labor Day on the first Monday in September! Back to school!

I find that you are right about the unique experience. It is even that way from State to State here.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your always wonderful words! I appreciate it!

Haha, yes an international wine tasting club, lifetime membership in case you land in a country where you find wine tasting tours available.

Now think of the fun that could be, not every day but available should the road or mood take you in that direction.

Loved the stone walls used in farming communities in UK when visiting there, learned a lot about the use in both stone and hedge sometimes the two together.

Enjoyed reading history on how concept was used in bygone warfare in America, some history we did not learn here.

Oh to the days when I could drink good wine- red and white. Now it's only the very occasional glass of Moscato (I've got a sweet tooth and need the low alcohol content..) as that description of the wine sounded truly delicious and eventually when I get to Virgina (cause I am also a HUGE Clive Cussler Fan too..) I will definitely have to go there and have a sip or 2!

What a gorgeous place. I love those old American barns. I can't wait to go there for the history tours aswell!

Just got home from work and Indy and I are sitting in bed as I write this and Indy just said how much she LOVES grapes too- before they get crushed though! 😅

I lookforward to next weeks 2nd part tour!

Oh and I always thought that they planted the red and white roses at the end of each row to signify what grapes were planted there.

Now that makes perfect sense! About these roses! I like your thoughts on it!

Interestingly enough, they use the same grape for the white as they do the red. I had no idea! But, it is true and when they showed me how I couldn't believe it. Doesn't it sound delicious?

What about DIRK????

I love those old barns too, except this was put up in 2010 - a true replica of the 1800s barn that was up. Haha! Indy has great taste. :) I will pull out the next part next week sometime and work on it some before I have to post it. I have the pictures mostly ready, but nothing else! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words!

Thats very interesting to know that they use the same grapes regardless of what colour the wine is!

It's been a long time since I went wine tasting in the Yarra Valley wine region of Melbs and even longer since I used to arrange wine training tastings for my staff when I worked in Hospitality...

But I Do remember that a certain virus makes my favourite wines. And that virus is Botrytis cinerea which makes sweet desert wines. 😋

Oh, you are a fountain of information, woman! Thank you. I guess I didn't realize that you were in so deep with the hospitality industry.

Wine tastings, bourbon bars, sipping liquors... all such peaceful ways to pass the time with good company.

Haaa yes, I was in there and everywhere for 35yrs...restaurants/pubs/clubs/nightclubs/resorts/islands- low class/high class/5*/backpackers...everything.

I always wanted to own my own specialty cafe bar and call it ...the Chocolate Bar..🤣(ofcourne...lolsz..)

You would love the menu...both the food and my delicious cocktails too...

But then after my first heart attack in 2010, which made me stop drinking..my priorities changed and I realised what my true purpose in life was- which I am still battling to achieve- 12yrs later...

I do miss those days though, especially the wine tours and long lazy liquid lunches, but just don't have time anymore either (alcohol does not mix well w heart meds either..) and am happy to have $$$ in my pocket than over the bar too..

I hear that! I am such a disappointment to the wine (and alcohol) industry. My drinking consists of sips as I was never a real drinker, but, I have always been happy with that. I joke about wine, but, that is where it ends. I had alcoholism in my extended family (Uncle and aunt) and I don't find it in the least attractive.

I think the heart attack did you a small favor in some ways. Alcohol rarely even mixes well with life for most. Chocolate Bar? I love it. Sounds like a great cappuccino/coffee bar!

And yummy!! It sounds delicious!

I was never a heavy drinker in the sense that I drank daily and just for the sake of it, but as a hospitality worker, I was a heavy drinker as it was for me as a party thing and I had a lot of parties, a LOT of GREAT times which I do not regret at all, but yes, I am (to an extent) thankful that I did have that first HA so I could take the time to stop and reconsider my future.

Soz, no coffee in the Chocolate bar...well ok yes there is, but the spotlight would be on the chocolate versions of coffee styles...🤣

Well now it's 1am and I do need to sleep, so I will say bonne nuit and I hope that you continue to have a wonderful day (while I snore my head off..🤣)

This was my 6th day at work and I have just 1 day off-tomorrow to do so much (clean up after Indy..) and something for me- my purpose which I haven't had the energy or motivation/confidence to do in the past 6months and I have promised myself that tomorrow (today) is the day, as it's a Monday and I love starting things on a Monday because it's a fresh start..

Oooh oh ooooh and I think that Clive Cussler's estate and the state of

Virginia need to create the great Cussler tour around all of those places in Virginia mentioned in his novels! I would be the first visitor!!! 😃

Goodnight gorgeous Denise!

Wow! What a beautiful place! It makes me think of the wine farms we have in Cape Town here in South Africa. They have similar wine testing facilities available to the public. We haven't been to one yet, but after reading your post, I think it must definitely go onto the to-do list.

It's interesting how they use the roses in the vineyard, serving a double purpose. Creating beauty while preventing the oxen and horses from cutting corners.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

You can find my post for this week here.

The roses are also there for their real job, the oxen and horses were just a bonus. :) They are like an alarm system (think canary in the coal mines) they tend to get aphids and fungus before the grapes, so they sound off the alarm when their health goes downhill. the grapes are next unless prevented! It was something new I learned!

Thank you so much! It really is much more beautiful in person, but, yes! Thank you!! With over 300 vineyards here in the state of Virginia, we could be on the Tasting Trail for the rest of our lives! I definitely think you should.

I have been to a few tastings and not always wine. Sometimes Mead, sometimes Cider... but, this was wine as I was pretty interested in seeing a small Virginia vineyard. Breweries and Distilleries are all fun, and this comes from someone who is not much of a drinker, but, I can easily be a taster.

Yes, the canary in the coal mines is a good example indeed! It's nice to hear that you are able to go to various tastings in your area. And I totally get it...you don't have to be much of a drinker to enjoy the tastings. If you enjoy the tastings and learning about the processes involved, that's all you need!

I love the way you describe the man and his family who bought the estate and made such a success of it. Especially in such a short time! It really sounds like a nice family.

I can imagine that such a venue would be a great hit and very popular as a platform for weddings as you mention.

I have to say, I found that video very interesting about the fences and how they were used on the battlefields for hiding, for cover, and even for forming obstacles to inflict more casualties on enemy lines.

I found this to be a very interesting and informative post!

Four minutes to learn? Four weeks to build and less than four seconds to conquer - if you are a goat! The theory is that if you can throw water through a fence, then the goat will get through it. And as I type I have one little girl in particular that is proving that theory!

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut apart from the ongoing fence issues (plus cows that like to lean them over) I love this post. You know my plan is to start fruit wine making? I thought I would begin last summer. But this summer it is! Looks like I need a lovely Jean to give me some tips. What a wonderful market. I was at a unique market today and I hope you will enjoy the cyber browsing as much as I did in reality Denise

Haha! Why do I not find that hard to believe, the renegade goat? I am excited about your plan with the fruit wine, best-laid plans, and all. I think you will find a way to make it a huge success, much like this guy did. Like you, he is passionate and you can feel it the minute you step out of your vehicle.

The owner and his wife are wonderful people and worked tirelessly to make it work, planting learning as they went along and it is finally paying off big time. I am so happy for them. It hasn't really been all that long, but, it is when you are building it and don't have an influx of money.

So, I am happy for them and gladly support their winery by buying and sending it out for gifts to my family.

Of course, I wish you great success and wonderful wine!

Thank you for supporting the tag and yes!!! Cyber Browsing is cool! ❤️

Yay… a wine tour. Love it 😍 I like going on these kind of informative tours.
What a beautiful area and so well kept. Jean truly looks happy, loving her job and a professional. It would be great to go on a tour like this. I’m already looking forward to next weeks post.

What great they even had a painting on the side of the barn. It so adds to the overall feel.
I like seeing those fences, they are great and can survive time for a long while.

I didn’t know about the roses… what helpful. They are a true alarm system for the grapevines. Thanks for sharing.
Such a great photographs Denise, I enjoyed them all. 🥰
Wonderful… so much beauty and history and so close by.

Thank you so much for sharing @dswigle 😊

I agree! I love these tours and they are fun for me too. I probably already told you that there are 300 Vineyards in Virginia and over 100 in Maryland. I have some serious tasting to do. I have only gone to about a few dozen of them!

Jean really loves her job and this is an exceptional winery. I was really happy to see them keep so much of the history intact and work around it to include the whole process. They did a seamless job. I will be going back again. The fences are so very cool and they used a few different examples all over the property.

The roses were a big surprise to me! Who knew!? Not me! Thanks so much for showing up and dropping your link. I hope you have gotten most of the house/apartment settled and you can relax a few while waiting to jump the pond.
I hope you have a peaceful weekend! Enjoy!! :)

Yes, so many in that region… you have lots to catch up hehehe 🤭

One could see she was having so much fun giving out all information.
It’s amazing when a place does keep history intact for generations to come. Some thing should not get lost.

I didn’t know either, I knew about mint, that helps protect vulnerable crops like salads and some other ones. But roses is new to me.
It is a great way without to much chemicals to be able to react instantly before it’s to late. Amazing 🤓

Most is done… still some more organising to do and unpacking. We will enjoy this new place for sure. It is much better on every level. And sitting in the garden 🥰 love it!
Thank you so much Denise @dswigle have a wonderful and peaceful weekend too.
Enjoy every moment. Bigg huggg 🤗😉🥰

Well, consider yourself having gone! You have never been until you go. It was an interesting tour, I learned a lot about tasting and how different ingredients are added to make a wine taste as it does.

Sort of like a cooking class, for grapes.

I found the need for roses another interesting aspect. Protecting the roses from bugs and disease.

I want to thank you for supporting the challenge and for dropping your post here!

Best to always give us reminders as we often times forget especially me.

Stents! They should have been done yesterday! Probably hundreds of yesterdays ago! Knees too? The fusion is harsh! :(

Nothing done yet, as we are fighting now with the medical aid and just today, they requested another from us. Yes I have had the expensive tests and scans and they show that my two vertebraes numbers 5 and 6 are severely damaged, so a fusion operation was suggested. In the meantime I just keep on going.

No special fund and no pension, but I don't plan to retire in any case and if I go home one day, then Marian will just continue with the work ❤️

The Bull Run Winery seem like s place to be and certainly it's gonna be a unique and an educative one for you with Jean as your tour guide.

How much do you know about wine?

I actually don't know anything about wine, nor how it's been processed, funny enough I'm not sure I know the name of any wine. ☹️

But then it's good to have another Friday that ushers in the market experience of hivians.

I now know how it is processed! What did I know about wine? Well, nothing much. My mother was French. She served wine as was in her parents' culture. I understand many do not for religious or cultural reasons. It is all good, we do what is right for us.

But, like you, I like to have new experiences that I can pass on. Thank you for your words and for dropping your link!

I hope all is going well with you and that you are having much luck in Lagos! Stay blessed.

Wow that's so good to know you've now learn how it's been procrastinating via your visit.

My mother was French. She served wine as was in her parents' culture.

I would have thought you've pick up some skills about it from her, well she probably never did it again.

Yea that's true, different people had their reasons for not taking it, mine is just personal decision, that as no cultural or religious impact to it.

I take wine though, but not anyone that as alcohol.

Thanks so much for having me in mind, Lagos is treating me well, though I'm still trying to get accustom to the change of environment and and different in how the deal with things here.

I love #MarketFriday ❤️

Have a blessed time.

though I am hoping I could someday,🙂.

That fence looks so cool as for me iy was perfect designs for vineyards. Usually, we used thay type of fencing (woods or sometimes bamboo) in the countryside. Then adder some barbwire.

Fantastic photos of such a lovely place. Seems like the sun is always shining there, and it makes for the best pictures!

Seems like a truly fun place to spend some time learning all about wine making and wine tasting!

All I know about wine is that I like Lambrusco. I don't need expensive, nor dry; yes just a sweet wine is just perfectly good for me.

I bet you will have a knack for appreciating the flavors. They have those same ideals about bourbon and pipe tobacco. I am not going to say any of such refined tastes is stretching it, but I swear I have never tasted any of those things that the pros can describe. I guess I need to train my palate too. All the same, I seem to enjoy it fine, albeit in my simple way. 😀

I am just under the wire with my Market Friday!!! It was a close one.

The sun does shine here a lot, but, we get a nice healthy dose of rain now and again. I am torn about the sunshine, too many spoils a perfectly beautiful shot

It is a fun place, steeped in history! I can imagine you in the State. You and your trusty metal detector. Especially close to the old battlefields. Things have been found and usually donated to the Historical Society. It is a fun discovery though!

Hehe. The Lambrusco man. I like a variety of wines, but, I am always willing to try a new one. I hope I am more able to appreciate the flavors. I am at the stage where I can taste some of these things, but, not nearly as suave as some of those that can taste the slight pepper of the late - well you know what I mean! You need to taste a wine that was produced with those flavors in mind. Perhaps that is why you haven't tasted any of them yet. A few vineyards and they will have you trained!

It can be a fun night out! Or day!

Just under the wire, man!!! You are lucky! 😉 Thanks so much for supporting the challenge and for dropping the link!

It is always interesting to see how each is run also. I have a fondness for the smaller, family-run vineyards. I don't know about being a promoter. LOL But, they put out some pretty fine wine for only being around for ten years.

The roses are a real thing. Who knew? :) Obviously the aphids! 🤣

To be honest, it is called Market FRIDAY as it is usually posted on Friday. Many people post on other days, but, that means that I don't look every day for new posts and may miss one. Do you have another challenge on Fridays?

If you have a post already, you can post it. If it is much later, could you please hold it for Friday? That is what many people will do.

Thanks so much for checking out #MarketFriday!

Here are the guidelines:

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive or cheap? Did it go up or down? Please do not post 30 pictures with no words about them.Do not use pictures more than once in a post!
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess on some
    4. #MarketFriday must be your first tag.
Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
    5. PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  4. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!

Interesting explanation of the whole tour, yes, there is no doubt that I learned something new, my congratulations to the guides and producers for their work, here is the link to my publication, it will not be so exciting but thank you for the initiative and your invitation. 🤗https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@cryptomaso/a-market-in-cuba-un

No way!! They are all interesting as we share the cultural part of it too. I learned something new also with the vineyard, I learned about the roses. Who knew? Not me!

The history of a place does add more quality to the place. I have yet to visit a vineyard and a winery. That's one great purpose for the beautiful roses.

Here's my entry for this week https://hive.blog/hive-163772/@leeart/sunday-market-encounter-in-baguio-city.

Happy #MarketFriday!

Isn't that the best purpose for the roses? All that beauty with a purpose! The vineyards were interesting even if one doesn't drink. The process and the history were well worth the visit. We have so many unique wineries here that it makes it fun to check out the differences!

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your link!

So interesting seeing other working cellars and vineyards. Reminds me how much we take this for granted living in the heart of winelands.

And, here is my late #marketfriday link 😁

I agree with you. I live with over 300 vineyards and I have to say I take it for granted. They have some wonderful themed events at this one!

Haha! Never late! Always perfect.❤️

That fence is beautiful and looks like it could stop a car, haha. It is a bit heavy on materials though, with that wood we could three more huts or cabins 😉. Our little patch of cassava fence is coming up well though, and although growing very slowly because our soil sucks, the plants are healthy enough to thrive eventually.

I think we will construct a wooden fence on the border with our neighbor and put some grass wall panels on it to give us some privacy. The panels will also prevent the cabin from getting foghatted when they burn plastic trash. Our other borders are the highway, the river, and the old road. On the highway I think we will go with a living cassava fence and some smaller plants like lemongrass and aloe near the highway.

I can't wait to have some barriers to discourage strangers from wandering around on our property.
