Market Friday and Sint Maarten and St. Martin

(Edited)

Oh, the day I have been waiting for! Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (That's me, me, me!!! But, you can call me Denise) I take great pleasure in perusing the posts you send me from all over the world. ran into some technical difficulty with the weather, so I dug into some pictures from a trip, one which I really had many great moments.

Come on down to the dock and hop in the boat. We'll go for a ride to the other side of St. Maarten where we will be doing a little local shopping. Later, we may see smell something delicious to eat, alerting all of our senses, but, shopping is on the to-do list today. How can we have #MarketFriday without a little bit of shopping? Watch your step! Don't rock the boat, baby.

I hope you don't mind the mascot coming...He has been around since the beginning of #MarketFriday and knows his way around. There is nothing worse than getting lost in a country that is not your own. Oh, but, if you do, it is one of the most delightful places to get lost. The people are happy, the atmosphere is calm and you just may want to get lost again.

I bought a day pass for the ferry, so I can go back and forth all day if I want to. When the ferry stops, I step off as it lets you out on the main street, which is so convenient for getting around. Let's make our way down the streets in Phillipsburg. Hey be careful, don't step on the tourists!

I can see my first street market of the day coming into view! Let's take a look around and see if there is something that catches our eye! If you don't see it there, go around to the back of the Courthouse and if there is a cruise ship at the port, the market will be open.

The market behind Whatey Square is a real bargain basement. Sint Maarten t-shirts and a few art galleries that are worth checking out. Duty-Free liquor stores. And all the jewelry stores one could wish. But, that is not what I came for.

They have everything I need - but. some things I am pretty sure would be confiscated upon my return home. Thankfully, the Cubans are now allowed in the States. Although truth be told, it never impacted my life, one way or the other.

You can buy anything, but you shouldn't buy everything you see.

After a bit, we decided to stop and take in some sun and shine, part of the shopping experience here on the island. Oh, do not worry, you can continue shopping in your state of rest. Surprise!! If you cannot go to the shops - the shopping will come to you!! Talk about accommodating!!! Who knew?

3W72119s5BjWPGGUiZ9pqnZoj8JHYxCCp9dtn2QVe6Du82wc58D4ykC7Xb1fw5194FycT1oaDnXmhssgnSB28YFuwqeAhBPu3CFuAkuPondAeq93NEWyGA.jpg

The beach was beautiful and the vendors' plenty. Massage? Hair Braiding? What do you need? They got it, or they'll get it.

"If you are not sure of the size, you can try it on... if you are too tired, I will try it on for you. No problem."

Moving along. They came by in neverending droves. But, it doesn't bother me. They are just trying to make an honest living. They are all nice and very much people-pleasers, and as long as they don't get to be aggressive in their sales pitch, I am all for it.

3W72119s5BjWPGGUiZ9pqnZoj8JHYxCCp9dtn2QVf2H8NE3diAgJzCEUWi7kNw9jbs43X8PsVm5RhzcqLqhzDAg9i2B8v2BnFptX4NXkKuLw28MjeLEafp (1).jpg

The flea market is well worth the look. There were a few kitschy things there, but for the most part, they were hats and well-priced t-shirts for those you left at home. I went around the corner to a linen shop. I like the Dutch side of the island for linens.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: How many golf balls can fit in a school bus?

source

Answer! Can you guess??? About 500,000, assuming the bus is 50 balls high, 50 balls wide, and 200 balls long!

divider2.png

All this shopping and thinking with my brain has made me hungry, so I say that we go shop to see what there is to eat around here. I can already smell that I will be having the conch soup, with a side of escargot! Oh, yummy delicious! Come in, sit down and grab a menu! I have been here before and I love their food. It is just as cute inside as it is outside.

3W72119s5BjWPGGUiZ9pqnZoj8JHYxCCp9dtn2QVfziS5mFtD9p8wKctNDaJv1kKph8jS5HGzEM2gHKrkVtNyD7EjtvSQAUywd7wU1NQhkyJ7bouM21QoG.jpg

Finishing up lunch, we wander a bit. I never did get anything at this shop, but, I do love their stairs. A creative way to advertise.

3W72119s5BjWPGGUiZ9pqnZoj8JHYxCCp9dtn2QVgNMTRbRpdN9XFmcRjgK53B97MD18WUUKttpejY2hSKpJy56dXvnao48xaWCkLC8Mm8GciwRVgW6bj4.jpg

Can we take a short detour to check out a different beach? The other side of the island is the French side, where it is more um, French and I love the relaxed vibe. Come on! the beaches are better too!

La vie est belle

Tsu 2 1.jpg

I love the island of St. Martin! The Dutch/French piece of real estate makes the visit interesting. This is the French side of Saint Martin, where the attitude is laid back, the food is oh-so-fine and there is an appreciation for the finer things in life…On the other side of this picture is the beach where clothing is optional. It took me over an hour to realize it. Oh, but that is a picture for another day. But, of course, not here. :)

image.png

Even though leaving your clothes behind, no pun intended... was forbidden, it was mostly in a state of undress... so to speak. As the afternoon wore on, more and more clothing was hung on the sign as a form of rebellion. :))

I was sure it must have been the Dutch inhabitants, as the French could read the sign. Am I right???

26 5.png

All my life, I have enjoyed the smell of the sea, practically at my doorstep. I romanticized about it, loved it, lived it and then the real truth comes out. The smell comes from a gas produced by genes identified by researchers as ocean-dwelling bacteria. It was in an article I read about 6 or 7 years ago. I close my eyes and ignore the scientific for a moment. Just let me finish my moment.

image.png

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post, again and again. And never forget, kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

I love to see all the colorful shops. Really great for picture taking. I might not spend too much money there, but I would love checking it all out.

The beaches look sweet. Bet there is some good metal detecting there! I dont mind the selling if it is respectful and not pushy.

Wow! Great selfie. Talk about burning up the beach! 😉

I love the colorful island life. I didn't have many market shops because I don't go to the shops that much. I look on occasion but hardly buy. Although, I do shop for their linen and some nice watches once in a while. It is fun to check out the first few times.

I will bet anything there is great metal detecting on those beaches. All those drunk tourists dropping their jewelry and such. Oh, yeah! Score! Kidding. I would be sick if I did that, but, #1- never drunk on the beach #2 never wear jewelry on the beach, well, except God (my medal)

I don't mind the vendors but, as you said, as long as they aren't pushy, it's all good.

And thanks. ;)

For some reason, a few images are not displaying for me.
Having a McDonald's across the casino must be a smart thing.

Are you using peakd? I found when I was, there were times I couldn't view other people's images. It comes and goes. Is it some kind of glitch?

McDonald's does a bang-up business there! That place is always packed. Thank you for dropping the link to your #MarketFriday post! Appreciated!

It looks amazing! Brightened up my day to see the blue sky in your photos. Rather a dull overcast day here in central france.

It's market day in our town... and of course I am there! https://hive.blog/hive-114105/@felt.buzz/it-s-friday-5th-june-2020-happy-market-friday-drop-a-link-to-an-undervalued-post-for-chance-of-reblog-upvote-and-tweet-or-leave

Oh, thank you!!! You know, anything French just pulls me that way! Oh, the skies are always so amazing there, you know, paradise! Here in the Washington, DC area, it poured last night, with a side of thunder and lightning. All night long. On the flip side, it cleared up for the morning and the grass looks great! And then tonight, it was the old, rinse, repeat kind of job... Greener grass tomorrow?

I love Market Day in your town!!! Are we bringing the dogs for a walk while we shop? Thank you for Upping and Reposting and extra mad love for Tweeting it. :)

Have a great weekend and thank you for stopping by and dropping your link!

What a beautiful marketfriday! I've never been to the island of St. Martin- The Dutch side or the French side. I love the beach. That is an interesting piece of information about the smell of the sea- that it comes from a gas produced by ocean-dwelling bacteria. Did you get to swim?
I know you love flowers, and I took photos of orchids for you here:

Great pictures always, i love the harbor though, i visited the Tema Habor in Ghana once and i felt sea sick for the few minutes i spent on a ship. I would love to try again though i think i was young then. Anyway here is my post:

I think we get excited when we are young and become ill on the boats. The rolling of the boat is strange if you are not used to it and plays havoc with your equilibrium. I think you should try it again! :)

I thought it was supposed to rain here this evening, but so far, not a drop !

We have had lots of rain off and on, so things are pretty green and lush here too.

I can only go see Mom if we visit outside. I mean, we could do whatever we wanted, but I don't trust the environment yet.... do you ?? I saw somewhere that some place had an 80% spike in covid cases. In the last day or two. I've really been unrestful about it, I mean, will we ever be able to have our whole family together again?? I fear she is becoming overwhelmed chasing the grown toddler around all day. I need to know how to save her.

There has been a spike in many places with COVID cases, especially as they open up more and more and people are treating it like life before it all started. Baby steps, people. Let's ease into it, using our masks and keeping socially distant where possible. Even airlines were shoveling in the passengers like sardines.

Hello?

You don't go anywhere and neither does your mom. It is good you are being careful about it. Who brings in their mail every day? I think I probably asked you this before. I know he has kids of his own and I would probably be guilting them by now to give respite care to your mom. She is eligible for respite care, but, of course, then you are letting strangers into the house and well, darn, that is no good either.

I have to be honest with you. At this point, I would be tempted to go over to your moms and give her a hand. You buy her groceries and she probably handles them right after you. I'm just saying, weighing the risks, her getting sick from being overwhelmed, and the risk of her catching anything from you ... I would say that I would probably go see her. She isn't going to make you sick and she has been alone for way too long.

Let me know how things go. xoxo @jacey.boldart

My older sister who is retired has taken on the task of making a grocery/meds/whatever run to Mom's once a week. (of course she would do something in-between if needed).... and they have a system where Mom leaves open the back of a suburban with the garage door open and my sister loads them in. Then Mom can take them out as needed and for the frig'd stuff, she wipes everything down with the clorox wipes. She use to wipe the other stuff too, but I told her that since she wasn't waiting till she was out, she could just leave the other stuff out there for some days without taking them in ...blah blah blah..... Mom takes in the mail and she "thinks" she has a system on that took but I told her with mail being mostly porous, wiping it down may or may not be helpful. Since her bills are never behind and nothing else is important, she needs to just let it sit and maybe open each day after it is 5 days old or so..... and of course washing hands after. She still has a good mind, but of course, with all the stress at home, it would be easy to over look something..... jeepers.... no way ot know how to handle everything.... .but she's trying ....I know, I know, everyone is dealing with it.... with the exception of the ones that are not....LOL ! People !! When it comes to my life and the lives of those I love, I'm chosing to err on the side of caution. I still wish there was a solution for her situation. There was an older gentleman that was coming twice a week so she could get away before this happen and he didn't think there was much to the covid thing and wanted to keep comeing, but she was afraid to let him. sigh..... and I would have been too, so I think she made the right decision.....in the way of covid.

She made the right decision. Indeed. Especially if he is giving respite care and thinks nothing about maintaining,

The mail is something you and I talked about before. I couldn't believe how many people don't think about how many hands touch it before you get it and nobody knows how long it could be contaminated.

Even groceries, the most careful people are wearing gloves and masks to the stores and the plopping those things in the cabinet. There will be an end to all of this or we will carve out a new normal. In the meantime, your mom is in my thoughts and prayers.

xoxo

Yeah... I wear masks and gloves to the store and leave the non frig things in the bags over at the piano for days. I always clear two shelves in the frig before my grocery trip to quarantine the new stuff on, taking care to clean anything I want to use soon.

Thank you, the more prayers for Mom the better. Bless Tommy's heart.

Already desperate for a vacation now I even more so long to return to St. Marteen/ Saint Martinafter seeing your awesome post! It's only been 14 months since I was there yet it feels like it was years ago!

You gave me an idea what to post about for Market Friday! I'll be back @dswigle🏖

Knowing how much you enjoy fresh seafood, did you happen to dine at Chesterfields Waterfront Restaurant & Bar in Philipsburg? The food and harbor views were incredible!🦞🍽🥗🥖🍸

Seriously yummy there! Best calamari ever!!! The views are amazing especially watching some of the beautiful yachts gliding through.

I had grouper last time I went and we shared some coconut shrimp and the calamari. I went there on our way home from Columbia, so it was only two days, but, made sure to get in a visit there.

All the staff are awesome, or the ones I have ever had. It is always busy, so I wonder what they will do when they resume serving? My waiter was Chris! He was awesome.

Thanks for the memories. There are a couple of good ones there, but, in my opinion, this one is the best and has the best views! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your always kind comments~

And thank you so much for the upvote and reblogging! That is so very kind, just like you always are.

A beautiful place to stop and take in the sights Denise. Thanks for sharing this fabulous expedition.💕

The clothes hung on the no nudity sign made me chuckle.

I also love the smell of the sea no matter if it’s caused by gas from whales. 🤣

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words, Jo! It's hot and humid out already, so looking forward to another day. :) Now, I cannot remember why I wanted it warmer?

Lovely place to visit, selling on our beaches has been fashionable for years, now we cannot get to the beaches yet, so loved seeing your photography today.

Quaint little shops to get lost in, yes sometimes advertising pays no matter where you place it. Linen shops sound interesting on the other side of town.

Thanks for the day on the town!

Thank you for dropping by and leaving your words! Most beaches in the US don't have too many vendors strolling up and down them selling, even the big tourist places. There are a few, but, I want to say you would need a permit for it. Not sure though. Everything needs a permit.

Off subject, but, on permits... In one of our States, you need a permit to panhandle. They give you a neon vest so you don't get hit by a car and you are allowed to stand at traffic signals. They are commonly referred to as begging permits. Seriously. That is just ludicrous. I wonder if they take tax out on the money or if you have to claim it and that is why you get a permit? Anyway...

We are still technically on lockdown. We are in phase one, although nothing but the same food stores are open. People can walk about a little and must still wear masks and keep socially distant, so nothing much has changed. The beaches are not open here, but, are in most places. We are slow to roll as there are too many people to just throw caution to the wind.

Thank you for stopping by! You are always such a breath of fresh air!

Many years ago most of our sellers were ladies doing beading, crocheting doilies for tables and hand made goods. Now they sell everything imported for cheap stores, very few of the older ladies still do traditional sales.

Some amazing artists arrive at the beach with very colourful art which is a pleasure to see.

Our poor fishermen thought they were allowed to go to the beach with our Sardine run happening right now, to be told to go home fishing, netting is still banned, I am totally at a loss for words on the matter of this virus.

Have a wonderful weekend Denise, life carries on even under lock down!

I needed no second invitation to "Come on down to the dock and hop in the boat" I tried not to "rock the boat" but when I wanted to take in ALL the sights, I couldn't sit still for too long.

St. Maarten has so much to offer doesn't it? How cool to have the vendors come to you? I like the idea of relaxing in one of those deck chairs on white sand, whilst looking out at that beautiful sea and browsing from there as sellers show me their wares. Very Cool indeed!

I know, right? It is truly a mecca for shoppers! The duty-free jewelry stores and trinkets brought to you, concierge-style... Well, what is not to love?

I prefer to fly there as opposed to cruise and be there only for the day, half of the fun is the nightlife on the Dutch side. :) I love the beaches on the French side though... Oh, so see? We must stay for more than a moment!

I hope all is well with you and yours. Not traveling at all (except to the Shore House) until COVID leaves town. Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words.

You must miss being able to fly and cruise Denise. We're doing pretty well here thanks. I'm really enjoying our day trips now that the weather is cooler.

Thank you! The weekend was okay. I should have made more effort to finish the sorting out of papers and things for recycling!

Have a nice productive week!

Oh this makes me want to travel to somewhere tropical again! I love the sun and sand and the markets. Well, I can’t complain because I was in the Dominican Republic in early March, just before the work kicked down!

It’s just so lovely to enjoy the sights and sounds of the islands! Great #MarketFriday post, @dswigle!

Me too!!! Well, I was in South America and made it home under the wire! My brother and sister in law were on the last thing that entered the country before they closed down! I was gone for a month, so I had no idea it was this bad.

Aren't we the lucky ones to get in a little vacay before it all went away? :)

I am so ready for another. Just saying. Although, work is so selfish about days off.. :) Oh, yes! Island life. Although I would never live there, it is definitely nice to visit! Hi, @jayna!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your always wonderful words!! Happy Sunday!
