Market Friday visits Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico

Welcome to Carlsbad Caverns National Park! It is located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, in the Guadalupe Mountains of southern New Mexico. What you are seeing are Mexican free-tailed bats making their exit from the cave, in what can only describe as something out of a horror show. Millions of bats pouring out of the cave as I sit, mesmerized by it. Who wants in on this?? Raise your hand!!

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

Pictured above it the Giant Dome. Impressive speleothem!! ( )Commonly known as cave formations, they are secondary mineral deposits formed in a cave. The Giant Dome is the largest stalagmite that was discovered in 1941-42. It is 16 ft. in diameter and experts estimate that it has to be 60 million years old. The cave has many separate rooms and it is located in the one called the big room, also holding the largest specimen.

carlsbad caverns 4.JPG

The formations in Carlsbad Caverns are limestone that has formed into stalactites. These stalactites, as they are called, hang from the ceiling and usually look like an icicle hanging. It is caused by precipitation (of minerals) from the water dripping down through the ceiling. These form so slowly – to give you an idea of how slow, it is less than ten centimeters every thousand years.

carlsbad caverns 12.JPG

On the other hand, stalagmites grow from the cave floor. The upward-growing mound of mineral deposits has grown by the precipitation from the water dripping on the cave floor. Much like the stalactite, but on the floor. It is truly fascinating to go through these caves and see the different formations and rooms formed over millions of years. In case you were wondering, it is actually cool, although damp in there, but, you are too focused on the amazing beauty in front of you. The columns were covered by a spiraling cover of calcified water,

A general admission is adults, 16 years and older are $15, children 15 and younger are free. There are additional fees for guided tours.

HISTORY

In 1898, a teenager named Jim White explored the cavern with a homemade wire ladder. He named many of the rooms, including the Big Room, New Mexico Room, Kings Palace, Queens Chamber, Papoose Room, and Green Lake Room. He also named many of the cave's more prominent formations, such as the Totem Pole, Witch's Finger, Giant Dome, Bottomless Pit, Fairyland, Iceberg Rock, Temple of the Sun, and Rock of Ages.

carlsbad caverns 16.JPG

I will be the first to admit that it was steep, but, will say that there are enough switchbacks to nullify that. I love hearing the echo, drifting through the cave, many were sounds of delight. Before I forget, take the natural opening down, it is a little steep, but not unsafe and I think it builds up the excitement for the descent down into the darkness...This was not a good picture of it, it really does look spooky! :)) We were backpacking and had a point and shoot camera along with us.

Rules of the Road

Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
Take pictures! Be creative (or not, we don't judge!)

Please leave the link to your post here so it can easily be found by others. It helps you and me to have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

carlsbad caverns 23.JPG

And just like that, this show is over. Come back tomorrow and we will do it again. The market? Oh, yes! Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! Just remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

carlsbad caverns 7.JPG

As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit #MarketFriday!! Thank you for supporting the challenge! Have a most fabulous day! Cheers!!

Carlsbad caverns 21.JPG

Everyone is waiting for the event they came for, the evening flight of the bats. I call it "roll out" as they seem to drop from where they are and head straight up into the sky. I can remember the sky turning almost black for a moment or three. To be honest with you, it totally scared the bejesus out of me! I would go into the house before it happened.(that was in San Antonio, but, then that is a bat for another story!) It used to be millions and millions of bats darkening the skies of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Now the number is much less. Maybe the pesticides? Moved to a new cave? Anything we guess is pure speculation.

Even though many places have been cleared to carry on as normal, please wear a mask when you go out and use proper social distancing.

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit, comment or even upvote. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

I have never heard of that one, but, I just Googled it and how cool it is! I saw a formation that looked like a dog sleeping! :)) How can you not love that!? I can hardly wait for it to be over, so that travel can be on the table again.

Le sigh.

This is no fun at all. Well, some fun, but, different. Thanks so much for stopping by and for dropping your link! It is so appreciated! Have a wonderful weekend!

I love bats! We have a few here in the town we live in. It is nice of an evening to watch the housemartins chase after the insects, and they climb higher and higher and then suddenly you realise they have gone and the things sweeping over your head are bats. I've never quite managed to notice the exact moment the birds hand the insect chasing batten over to the bats!

Those caves are amazing!

Anyway, as it is Friday, you get the usual photos of our market. It has turned cooler and is a bit overcast today. There are fewer stallholders. This is not COVID related. Usually, there are fewer tourists in the last two weeks of August (people still have time off work but go back to Paris to prepare for La Rentrée - the return to work and school) so many locals with families take this opportunity to go on holiday themselves.

Have a lovely weekend! :)

Oh!!! I really don't like bats! We had a summer house, my family did and it had a barn where the bats would roll out every evening, just ask dusk would come to town. They would swoop down and I could feel the air run through my hair! Ewwww! I was petrified of them!

As an aside, when I lived in San Antonio, Texas, where there are huge colonies of bats, one actually got caught in a girl's hair at a mall in San Marcos, a nearby town. I just about freaked out. My worst nightmare!!!

Ah, boo. Summer is kissing us goodbye, I can feel it coming. Even though it has been over 32C for about 6 weeks, it feels different than in the heat of July. I hope you are having a pleasant weekend and thank you, as always for dropping your link!

Dang Denise. You made it to Carlsbad Caverns you were darn near to Yuma. Within 700 miles, anyway :) That's in the neighborhood in this part of the world...

It's a glory, isn't it? I'm not real comfortable underground, but I certainly enjoyed Carlsbad Caverns. Just an amazing place. There's another near it in glory here in AZ: Kartchner Caverns. No where near as developed, but still pretty impressive.

Bat guano (there's a polite term) is collected and sold for soil amendment. Makes it a Marketplace in my book!

Thanks for a great look!

I did, didn't I? I have been to Yuma many times, that is why I don't go back!!! :)) Kidding! It is really a dream in the winter. Best weather ever. At least that is what my father in law used to tell me...

Only 700 miles! Well, you know that is just s snooze for me, right? I could have done that at least three times in a bad week. The underground does nothing for me, but, the caverns? Art in Nature, for sure! Kartchner Caverns? Near Benson? Smaller, but what a sweet site that is. It reminds me of Luray Cavern here, Smaller, but, packed full of the good stuff!

The gross smell, that bat guano! And they sell it!!! Hello, no. LOL True, it does make it a marketplace. A dirty, stinky one Hehehhe

Thanks for stopping by and your always wonderful words, Tom! @bigtom13 Have a great weekend!

Awwwhhh, beautiful sight. I have yet to visit a cave, and see such stunning stalactites/stalagmites with my own two eyes. Maybe soon, when my kids are a bit bigger. Hehe.

They really are pretty nice and I don't know where you are as not all caves have them, but, when you do see one, it is like a score!!! I let my kids get big enough to enjoy it and be able to remember. I find that so much better!!

You really are smart!

If it had been free entry, this blog would no longer fit into #marketfriday, I think it was very good for #haveyoubeenhere! That matters less, it's important that it's as usual ... very good.

Truth! If it had been free entry, I would never have used it! Thank goodness for me it was! :)) It looks like I cannot use the #haveyoubeenhere with my #MarketFriday community. If I am wrong, I punish myself only.

It was a different one, for sure, but, it is interesting. Too bad I didn't allow myself enough time to do a better job. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words, Dan! @bluemoon

I loved Luray Caverns, Victor!!! It is so close to here, it is like having your own private cavern. Now during COVID, all the tours are self tours, however when they get back to normal, all tours are guided, but, if you want to take your time and do it slowly, Wednesday you do a self-guided tour.

I really love the Stalacpipe Organ!! So haunting. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words! Have a great weekend!

Thank you! It is so very cool and especially if you use the Natural opening as opposed to the man-made one. The bats may be unique, but, I really don't like them. :))

The cave was pure art in nature though. I hope you do get to go someday. It is a worthy visit! Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and leave your words. They are much appreciated! Have a great weekend!

Haha! Aw, Snick! I really miss that about you. :))

I have to tell you, I do not like bats. The mere thought of having one in the same space as I am in just gives me the heebee jeebees. No kidding. When I lived in San Antonio, you know there were huge colonies of bats, one cave was Bracken Cave, the largest bat colony in the world; It wasn't but a couple of miles from my house. When dusk came, the skies would get black. I kid you not. If I was out, I used to freak out, especially after one actually got caught in a girl's hair at a mall in San Marcos, a nearby town. Then I freaked out. My worst nightmare!!! I kid you not. Did you live there then????

Anyway, I hiked a mile down in the cave before I realized the walls were breathing... Guess who didn't do their homework!!! Thanks for stopping by @nd leaving your words. @jacey.boldart You are a real hoot n' holler.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Oh I would love to see that cave! I missed out on the Devil's Icebox the kids saw in Missouri. Very cool to see all of those bats. They really eat up a bunch of mosquitoes. Glad you didnt get a free sample of guano 😂

I had no idea you went to Missouri! The Devil's Icebox is a really small cave that was wet and challenging to navigate for some of the people I saw. It literally has no stalactites or stalagmites. I would wait for Carlsbad Caverns or when you move to Virginia there is one with a nice set of them called Luray Caverns.

Free sample? They charged for it!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words behind. Glad you could make it this week! :) I know how busy you are!

Thank you so much for that and you would love some of the caves over here because they are definitely crawlable! Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and say hello and dropping your link. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.

I will tell you a secret. Because everybody does the post heater on live blog or Peakd or even just using the market Friday tag. I was spending hours looking for post so I found that the easiest thing was to search them all out and repost them first and then go back and answer them. It stopped the back and forth in wondering if I got them all. Some people don't even put a tag they put Market or something else and many don't even named me so I have a hard time finding they may end up taking me days and days and days to get them all. I'm not whining I'm just trying to tell you how and why I do that. Thank you so much for dropping your leg and I'll probably get to you tomorrow I am off to work at right now. Have a great night!

That is really not fair on you , you should not be wasting your valuable time hunting there post down you spend enough of your valuable time giving out the most awesome comments all the time without fail now people should appreciate that time of yours and make there post more easily to be found by simply putting the link under your @marketfriday post is that so hard to do...lol..you need to toughen up girl if there post is not under your post comment section well tough luck for them it doesn't get seen or read so all you @marketfriday people that are not doing this wake up to yourselves and give @dswigle a fair break she has enough to do and better things to do then go hunting for your post...you get the drift do as your told or miss out it's that simple.

I looked it up (it's actually in Indiana) but, it looks pretty cool. Aren't all caves, though? I am so happy that despite life right now, you are able to get decent internet and post about your life and surroundings. I got a post from your significant other, so, of course, I am excited to read it sometime today as I scroll through them.

Wow, that’s a lot of bats! Fortunately they eat mosquitoes, so I could use a small army of them around my house.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to Carlsbad Csverns, but wow they are beautiful. What an enterprising and intelligent teen who came up with all those cool names!

Lovely Market Friday post! I’m going to put mine up today, a day late as I fell asleep last night before I could get it done. 😁

It is a pretty cool place! If you ever get out there again, you should go! It is tres cool and you can hike a mile down to the bottom of the cave.

I do not like bats as they really do swoop and it scares the bejesus out of me. I know, silly, but, when I lived in Texas, one had his radar shut off and got tangled in a girl's hair while I was at the mall!

EEEEK!!!! My worst nightmare came true!!!! I look forward to your post! Love to you! Have a great Sunday!

I've been there several times as a kid and and adult! My mom was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico and then moved to El Paso. I grew up in El Paso, Texas; so we lived fairly close to there. My husband, kids and I visited there when we were back visiting family in El Paso when our kids were around 5 and 8 years old. I love Carlsbad Caverns! It is so amazing! I've walked down and back up. I've also ridden the elevator back up. My mom tells the story of my grandmother, her mom, visiting there when they would lower you in a large basket to look around! Yikes - that was before they had made the pathways and installed an elevator! Also, I think it is so amazing to see the bats emerge!

Oh Wow!! It must be so AWESOME inside the caves! I've never been to Carlsbad Caverns, but also I have only been to a few places outside of the U.S.
Hopefully, I will be able to join you this week for #marketfriday. I waited this long to see if I can get something together... I will have to skip this week, my sweet friend @dswigle.
Have a lovely week ahead, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

I traveled the US as a young person with my parents and after high school, between college... then the continent after school for a year. So, I have taken to doing more of the world in the last few years, but, decided if COVID goes on much longer, I need to do the US again. :)

No worries, it is fun to have you, but there are times I cannot even make it here!!! Love to you and thank you always!!! xoxoxo

#MarketFriday loves you!

Awwww.... then that makes me feel better. I hate missing out on the fun of #marketfriday. (BTW, I missed seeing your name on the EL list, I was wondering if you are okay. I tried saying "wassup" on discord, but we aren't in the chat room at the same time)
Even without you showing us about your travels in your blog, I know that you are well-travel! There is a "bigness" of heart, spirit, understanding, and compassion exhibited by well-traveled individuals like you, my sweet friend!
I hope all is well with you, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

I took my name off the EL list for a while. I am still in the comments, but, I like to give the top spots to others after a while, otherwise, how fun is it to be at the middle looking at the top you will never get to? So every once in a little while, I tell Asher to take me off for now. Although, I still sponsor a number. And I am great! :))

I do say hi back on discord, but, it is after you are gone. I usually leave a heart on the message, so you will know saw you when I get there.

I am well and finishing up #MarketFriday! I am soooo slow. I cannot use the engage thingie for the blogs, I have to scroll back and reread sections and it is just easier on a laptop. Plus, I really like seeing the pictures big! :)

Thanks for checking up on me, Dr. Silver Stacker. xoxox

I think that the only reason I made it a bit higher was because we were having discussions in the silvergoldstackers community about the changes. I personally wasn't competing, even when I made the remark .."and I was out for a day sick" or something like that. I never looked at EL as a competition. Come to think of it now, the comment of @brittandjosie.."and don't we just love @dswigle" was actually a remark to let me know, (me in particular) that the ranking was fake, because you gave way to me. I certainly do enjoyed commenting and replying back to everyone on Hive without regard to EL. So I think I will asked to be taken out from the list too. Thanks for letting me know, sweet @dswigle! Take care 🥰🌺🤙

Hahaha! Oh, but, you are #1 in my book @brittandjosie!! My #MarketFriday takes so much writing that it always pushes me to the top, so I asked to be taken off. Don't get me wrong... I will only watch @johannpiber and @papilloncharity on top so long and then I get back on! :)) I am evil that way!

I'll be rooting for you!

Oh ne, so I am discussed and threatened behind my back???
Now let me get this straight Lady @dswigle
I thought that I was #1 in your book.
You don't have an evil bone in your body, in your mind, or in your heart.

So, from now on to preserve what there could possibly be to preserve, I will stay away from the top positions hahahah.

❤️ 🤣 ❤️

Hahaha, oh yeah, we are so strung up with the load shedding here that I have to catch up on Hive and this is my last reply for the day from you, as I have now thankfully done all of the others.
Surely if you get back on, you will have very little competition milady.

A hearty good night to you and thank you for the kind tip and also for all else that you do for us ❤️

You are one of the few people in the world who I believe could never be evil, dear Denise 🤗 Either would Zac @papilloncharity move to the dark side, what will also never happen, unless he chases squirrel moms around 😉

If it's for me then you should come back on the list, because I don't believe to be in a top position till I will post more regularly again one day ☺️

Have a wonderful weekend dear Denise 🤗

Cheers and !BEER

Hey, Barbie @silversaver888 That is exactly how we all make it! Having little discussions and interactions is what is the name of the game! I know you weren't competing! :) It is all in fun and truly, it is like the girls against the boys. LOL We are so juvenile, I know! :))

I didn't give way to YOU, I just stepped down to give myself a break, basically, so I could goof off a week or so and give room to another person. Trust me, she didn't mean that, the Dutch in her wouldn't let her mince words. She always says what she means.I like that about her. I think you should relax and enjoy it. It really helps you get to know others in different parts of the blockchain and you keep our seat warm up there! Have fun with it. Everyone else does. We play as we compete, but, actually, most of us give out more than we ever receive.

Please don't take the comment, personally! She just was letting me know she misses my help to secure the top! :)
