The Pumpkins are Coming! The Pumpkins are Coming!!

The pumpkins are coming! The pumpkins are coming! Pumpkins!!! Who doesn't love pumpkins? Pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice latte? Pumpkin soup! Pumpkin bread! Bring on your pumpkins!! So glorious! What do you like that is made of pumpkin?

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

The sight of a pumpkin took me by surprise this week. Fall is around the corner, but, we are still sporting summer weather. Even if it is for only this week. Pumpkins everywhere. Too early you say? I thought so too, but, there they were, in all their orange glory. They actually do come in an assortment of colors - blue, green, yellow, white multi-colored, and red. I am sure that I may be missing some. They can be tiny, oblong, squat, round, shaped like a pear, tall, and some so big, I would have to carve them in place. There are some that are better for Jack-O-Lanterns, many, better for eating and then some are just pretty and are better for display.

When I was a child, the appearance of winter squash epitomized autumn: squash, pumpkins, and gourds. Glorious winter squash! Acorn squash, butternut squash, hubbard squash, spaghetti squash, cheese pumpkin, delicata squash, kabocha squash. I admit it! I am in love and it is with winter squash! Don't judge! What is your favorite recipe using pumpkin?

Golden Flower.png

You can actually use the white pumpkin as an alternative to the regular orange pumpkin that we grew up with. For cooking or carving, it works much the same. It was a little more expensive at about $5.00 for a medium-sized one. It actually said $5.00 each, but, the only size they had was small and medium.

0P2A0052-001 2.JPG

Many gourds are grown as food, but, many are used as an ornamental piece, usually around the harvest season. In some countries, they are dried and used to make bowls, ladles, scoops, bottles, and even utensils. There are many useful objects that they can be utilized for.

0P2A0260001.JPG

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: Last week, I went to market with a whole crop of pumpkins which I had grown in my pumpkin patch. I sold half of them plus half a pumpkin and found that I had one whole pumpkin left. How many pumpkins did I take to market??

source

Answer! Can you guess??? I took three pumpkins to Market!!

Center Crest.png

The pumpkins are nice, but, I have to admit, I buy them so I will have their seeds, which makes me select a nice heavy one...Bigger pumpkin, more seeds? On average, a medium-sized pumpkin will usually have about 1 cup of seeds- that can be salted, dried, and roasted. Yummy!!!

0P2A0013.JPG

I went in search of a few harvest pumpkins and gourds, which are currently being picked by the local farmers. There are plenty to go around, but they are being picked little by little - most are still in the fields curing. By curing, of course, I mean they are still in the ripening stage. The pumpkin is harvested when the color is uniform and the rind is hard. The farmers watch the weather for the nighttime lows now, although here in our area, we have been still having summer weather. But, all it takes is one hard frost to kill the vine. Once the vine dies, the fruit will no longer mature. Yes, they are a little dirty from the field, but, I promise you, they will be clean and pretty when they are ready to be sold.

Love.png

I picked this one! Honestly, I think these large orange and green gourds are my absolute favorite.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Yummy pumpkin fritters, pumpkin pie, soups and puddings coming from all varieties and sizes.

Used as kitchen implements when hollowed out or decoration at certain times of the year then eaten in any case.

Wishing you a wonderful day and thanks for sharing the pumpkin seed recipe another healthy treat Denise.

Oh, yes!! Another pumpkin fan!! I knew I liked you. If nothing else, it is the Autumn smells cooking that I love about the season! :))

I always thought it was interesting to use the gourds when they dried, making use of what nature offers up to us.

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your words @joanstewart! Have a wonderful weekend!

The corn is grown especially for the Autumn Harvest season, purely ornamental. People hang around the house or on the outside of their door. Pumpkins are in season right now, you can hardly go to any store without seeing one.

Thank you for stopping by and dropping your link! Have a wonderful weekend.

It is definitely time for pumpkins! We have quite a few growing in our garden... of the eating variety, and lots of pumpkin recipes of various kinds to try out. Ours are just starting to turn orange, but should be ready for picking in maybe 2-3 weeks.

Oh, that is so awesome! Growing our own food is something we always toy with and can and preserve some for the winter months when fresh is no longer homegrown.

A wonderful autumn blog! About an autumn that is still shy this year.
I found with amazement but also with joy that the climate in your area is almost identical to the one where I live.
Pumpkins are extremely decorative and photogenic. I'm glad that these pumpkins convinced you to put a recipe. I think it's the first I see from you.
I'm not a big fan of pumpkin pie or baked pumpkin but I will definitely try your recipe.

Our climates are very similar!! I agree!! But Google doesn't. We don't seem to get as cold as you do in the winter.

Washington, DC the average daytime highs peak in July at 88 degrees and fall every month until January, when the average daytime high is 43 degrees. The range for DC, then, is 88 to 43 degrees. After some search, I found that DC’s climate sister city is Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan (range: 87° to 44°).

It said Bucharest is more like Cincinnati, which is bitter cold in the winter. So, the internet knows nothing. :)

It's not a bonafide recipe, I just threw it in without measurements. But, I do love the seeds and salt them heavy. They are one of those things that you either love it or you don't. No in-between. :)

Glad you stopped by to say hello, leaving your always lovely words behind! Thanks, Dan! @bluemoon

For me, Google was you. I didn't want to have exact figures, for me the information in your posts was more important. Yes, I think the winters in Bucharest are colder but the tendency is to become more moderate.

Beautiful. What a glorious look at pumpkins, squash and gourds. I always loved this time of year when I lived in the north. Meant hunting season and glorious fall was just around the corner.

I'm just not the world's biggest pumpkin fan. I enjoy the pie at holiday time though I'll choose Pecan or Key Lime if those are offered. I love pumpkin bread, and the seeds.

Sam really likes the seeds! They are a natural wormer so he gets some. Truth is, he feels pretty special when I give him a half dozen seeds one at a time. He really does like them.

Thanks Denise. A typically wonderful Friday Market!

My brothers all love hunting season!! I did so love it when they would make sausage out of their booty and once I actually had bear sausage. Now, to be honest, I could never eat it, the thought of it made me ill, however, one day, one of my brothers served it to me and it was delicious!!! I loved it.

Now, I still cannot know it and eat it, which only proves the mind is stronger than my stomach. Hmm. I make unusual things with the pumpkins. Well, not unusual, but, pumpkin soup, tortilla soup made out of the pumpkin. Pum[kin Bread, pudding, and pie, only at Thanksgiving.

Sam is super cool! I knew I liked him!!! :))I had no idea they were a natural wormer. I learn something new every day! Thanks, always, Tom. You are the best. I appreciate the stop over and the kind and generous words. Have a great Sunday!

Fantastic shots, Denise! Thanks for sharing!

What is your favorite recipe using pumpkin?

Well, that's got to be pumpkin jam, of course! It goes well with everything, from fruit or a fruit salad to yogurt, cheese, bread, cookies... you name it! I bet I could even get away with using pumpkin jam as a siding for a squid's dish, if I wanted to! 🤭

Amazing pictures as always, but that first shot looks like a stock photo (in the very best possible way) - the colors and contrast between those adorable little gourds is like fall in one capture! I'm also particularly fond of the shot of Poe's companion. Thanks for sharing the seasonal awesomesauceness, and I need to get a Market Friday put together in the very near future - I still have a bunch of shots from the swap shop at our local landfill, and since it's been closed for months now (for obvious reasons), it might be fun to go through and turn them into a post.

Love those punkin photos ! I never, ever get tired of them, no matter how many I see. I almost did a post with some the other day and then thought "I'll wait a little longer"

Aren't they so festive?? I wasn't going to do pumpkins either, it seems so early, but, I think I can get one more pumpkin post or three out of them before I celebrate Thanksgiving. I need to pay proper homage to them all! I really like the lumpy pumpkins. :) They have so much character, don't they? If I were more crafty, I would dry out the shell and use them for bowls. I love that idea.

I had a Chimineas from Mexico when I lived in San Antonio. I loved it - and then, the movers broke it. :( I think I want another!

They sure have come a long ways since I was selling gourds as a child. We would get different shapes and a few with warts, but the modern colors and shapes and sizes are much more diverse now.

Now, you are going to go make me look at the picture. I thought it was from out in a friend's boat, but, you could be right. I didn't really look at it. I know ... I mean where did autumn come from. Here it feels like I am still waiting for summer to begin. The year of stolen seasons. Not sure what Halloween will look like in these parts. Trick or treating may have to take a year off. But I promised my son we would still do something spooky and fun.

Lovin all those gourds. Orange is still my favorite. I'm old school.
