Union Station on a Market Friday

Union Station, Washington, DC

Anyone who works downtown will agree that mass transportation is the best way to get around unless you are walking. Washington, DC is a very walkable city. It has been hard hit since the pandemic, most of the cars are empty, despite social distancing with seating. People have been driving in since the outbreak. The metros were closed, so the entire government just about shuts down. We depend on our Metro!

I used Uber to get to a station in Northern Virginia, then metro down to DC. When I got to the station parking lot, I was appalled that the station that has spaces for 900 cars has 10 cars in it. Ten! Obviously, telecommuting is quite the rage still. There are literally over 60,000 parking spaces for cars in the area, not including parking for the metrobus.

The Metro Lines consist of six different colors, red, blue, silver, orange and green. I use the blue line the most, which runs from the west to east then heads south. It serves the stations for the Smithsonian, Arlington Cemetery, McPherson Square, which is the White house stop and the National Airport, just so you can save the limousine fare.

Fares are calculated by how many stops you actually travel and this fare can vary during peak travel time/off-peak hours. Peak hour price- $2.25 to $6 per trip.Off-peak price-$1.85 to $3.85. All riders must pay with a SmarTrip card or your phone app. The SmarTrip can be purchased at any station. The phone you can use the play store. But, you already knew that.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

Union Station is a surface street network that is free. However, it consists of only one line that is a little over 2 miles. I personally take the metro. It is quick and easy and gets me to work on time. The metro here works well in the city and many of the suburbs. When it snows and covers the tracks, the metro closes, too much rain, one of them off the tracks... You name it, it's happened.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: The following four groups of letters are nonsense. But, if you add just one letter to each group then rearrange the letters, you'll create four real words. The letter you need to add is the same across all four groups. What is it?

CEELMO

Answer: The letter is W...how many of you got it?

To figure out which platform to stand on, you need to look for the end-of-line destination. That is the color train you want. Look how empty!! You usually have to fight for a seat!I'm okay with this. I only take it when I have to. I have been driving more than normal. Better safe than sorry.

0P2A8251.JPG

The only seats you can sit on are the ones without a tag. The rest you need to skip to remain socially distant. I would say that people have been good and respecting that.

0P2A8332.JPG

Notice that there is one-way traffic here also. There is no turning back once you make the decision to forge ahead! Just keep moving along.

20200717_072642001.jpg

The focal point of the Union Station’s main entrance is the Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain, which many know as the Columbus Fountain. It was designed by Lorado Taft in 1912. It depicts Columbus on the bow of a ship, which you can clearly make out on the right-hand side of the picture.

0P2A8288.JPG

A large statue sculpted of Columbus for Columbus Circle, this has seen graffiti and many words have been used to describe it. Not all of them nice.

0P2A8199.JPG

I like this station and its and major transportation hub that it is. Amtrak's headquarters is here. So, if I want to take a train, it is convenient. The metro makes life so much easier for everyone that lives here. And next time I get down there, which will be tonight... I will show off more of the statues representing Roman legionnaires that ring the balcony level of Union Station's Main Hall. There are thirty-six of them.

Of course, who doesn't love a good food truck??!

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

It’s shocking to see empty metro station and so many empty seats! Our trains are packed during rush hours!! But people wear masks on public transport! At least it stop the spread of influenza!

Have a wonderful weekend!

These are normally packed with standing room only, people wear masks even with the social distancing. We haven't opened everything like you have yet. I am happy to see them stop the spreading though!

Have a fabulous weekend!!

Train travel is most probably safest with so few actually using it right now. The station photography is charming, love the old and new features mixed into this iron lady serving a nation.

Wish our trains were still in business gently taking one to destination, our roads are chaotic!

Stay safe and thanks for sharing what you seeing around you during these bleak times Denise.

Train travel is, but, I won't go long distances because of the airflow situation. I do love train/metro/subway stations almost anywhere I went.

The metros were closed because the city was not open, so there is no business. When a few things opened, they needed to open the Metro. Federal Government is still telecommuting unless you are working secret issues.

Believe me, I wouldn't be out if I didn't need to be. I haven't had a chance to be isolated yet. I know it is no fun though..

Thanks for the tipu!

Train travel was so convenient for short daily hops and long distance, sigh, our trains are all but gone due to bad management and theft!

That's too bad!! I agree with you! Between the rickshaws here, small transport vehicles, metro, and train, you really have a lot of options to get around.

That is really sad that is all gone from there.

Very beautiful metro station in Washington, not so crowded at the moment. That there are parking places for 900 cars and only 10 cars parked, sure is curious. Advantage that you don't have to find a parking place, I always have this problem. Stay safe, have a great weekend!

That was the one-stop. In actuality, in the Washinton DC metro system, there are over 60,000 parking spaces, because some people walk to the station and others carpool to get there.

I love metro stations, especially the older ones. They make such a gracious entrance onto the architectural scale. How are things over there now? You are really sending me some amazing shots! Thank you so much!

Stay safe, my friend!

Very cool photos! I wish my town had a complex metro system like that. Ours looks like a joke and doesn't really do anything else than taking you through the very center of the town... if you want to go elsewhere, the metro ain't for you. You'll need legs... and plenty of time! 😄

Haha! Portugal? Yes, for sure! Straight through the middle of town and all those hills!

I do love the metro and life is so easy when you can hop on it and off of it. Maybe they feel like they don't need one? I can remember a streetcar right through the middle of town too.

I used to take the subway in Prague when I lived over there and it was so old, I thought I was going to die every time I went on it! :) Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

Wow you're warming my heart! I grew up in Silver Spring and lived in DC in early and mid 90s as a bike messenger in Mt. Pleasant, Colombia Heights, and Takoma Park. I know its a different city these days. Haven't been there for over 12 years. Thanks for the lovely memories. DC always in my heart :)

Oh, that is so good!! :) You grew up in Silver Spring? How cool is that! I have lived here twice, once in the '90s as a new student and now. I lived 15 different places between then and now. My brother worked in NYC as a bike messenger. He loved it. You haven't been back here in 12 years? You must still have family here.

Oh, the memories. Mine is of Connecticut and a house on the water and working in NYC... but, I do love it here and there is definitely never a dull moment. You were in Thailand, weren't you? I saw that you were in Cambodia. Did you just hop the border for a visit or did you trade in locations? Are you employed there from a company over here or did you just hop a plane one day and never come back, except for a visit?

Well, I look forward to reading your post. Although I don't see your link here, I saw one floating around which I will get to tomorrow. Thank you so much! Stay safe out there!

Yes I'm from Colesville originally. Tamarack if you know that neighborhood. Silver Spring is quite a big area. My brother is still there with his family. Ah that Cambodia post is full of photos from a few years ago actually as all the borders are closed these days. I came over here as a backpacker in 2000 and never really went back long term. Was based in SF when I left.

I'm familiar! I know where the neighborhood park is and I know where Tamarack Road is. Close enough? :)

I know the borders have been closed for a long while now and so glad you have taken the opportunity to globetrot as you have. I did after school take a year and all of the Europen continents for a year and then got married, had 3 kids, and while they were young, homeschooled them and traveled the US in an RV with three kids and a dog and homeschooled in my spare time. Best time EVER.

Are you ever coming home or have you found your forever home? :)

Yeah that's the place! Nice neighborhood. We used to go to White Oak when we were kids. Yes the US is great to travel around. I made it to almost all the lower 48... No plans are the best plans :) Going back to the US? Maybe to buy land in the countryside or a sailboat. I grew up sailing on the Chesapeake :)

Homeschool is great. For good or bad I went to public schools. Luckily Montgomery County had a fairly good ed system. Wow this is reminding me of lots. Yeah we used to spend lots of time in the creek behind our house. Paint Branch I think...

Paint Branch has a great bike trail over there. Not sure if you have ever been when you have been home. I homeschooled only when I took them on long trips, like the US and Europe. It was good to give them a year of immersion rather than a week trip. All in all, they love being vagabonds. :) Montgomery County have excellent schools and there is no need to go private with schools like that.

Such a small world.

Yes indeed. We used to iceskate at the girl scouts camp there. Yes I used to ride those trails that led to the pool over near Springbrook. I went to Paint Branch though growing up on the border. We spent most of our free time in the woods... Yes I'm happy to have grown up in Montgomery County. Quite fortunate.

When I am in DC I am always confused which platform to go to catch metros. Unlike Toronto where we have waiting platform for each line, they have different trains coming in the same platform. The trains are good though. Easy way to get around the downtown and tourist attractions.

Well, I guess it can get confusing if you don't use them all the time, although they are always very well marked. I do remember when I moved here, it was challenging. :) I do like Toronto, which is a much newer system. Ours is ancient! Stay safe out there!

I love #marketfriday s simply because of the many things and new information I learn. Thanks for showing us how social distancing in implemented in public transportation systems where you are. To be very honest and like many, many others, I have not taken public transportation for regular everyday transport needs since my college years, and do so only as it relates to plane rides and local and international travels.
Here is the market I visited early today. ENJOY!

Sure! I get that. There isn't a need, but, it is so much easier here to do so. If I go over to my house on the Shore, they don't have Metros/subways and there would be no need, even if they did. The area doesn't lend itself to something like that. Plenty of parking and no need for even a bus. :) Although there is one.

I love using the public transportation when I travel. People are always so nice and helpful and it really mixes you up like a local salad. It's the best experience!

Thank you and you have a wonderful weekend. Be safe out there!

I think that riding the street cars and the cable car s of San Francisco is something that I miss a lot. And you are absolutely right, my college years of using public transportation gave me a lot of quality time to people watch, as well as get to know the community and "neighbors." After I moved out of San Francisco, it was necessary to have a vehicle to do everything then at times I found myself fighting and stressing and feeling the road rage. I miss the times I counld relax, read or even nap during my short commute using the street cars of San Francisco.
We love YOU, my sweet sis @dswigle, and love #marketfriday! 🥰🌺🤙

First of all a lot of information about the subway. Thank you! I didn't know anything about the subway in the US. Incredible how much it resembles the one in Bucharest, of course keeping the proportions. You go with the blue line, I go with the green line.

Yes, well, I use it for work every night and so, I decided to use it for the post as I pay for their service. ;)

Funny how many of the big cities look similar to the Metros/Subways of Washington, DC... but, ours was built last century with few changes. I know yours if old also, but, what grand buildings they are, yes?

Oh, you don't know how to write eclectic! LOL Yours must all connect to one another. It is the way you are built. :)

I really like the shapes of the architecture there in Union Station! Glad they are trying to keep the Metro safe with proper distancing. I have to really wonder how long those statues will be there for...

I finally got my weak take on a Market Friday post done. Best I can do given the pandemic and all :|

Well, honestly, you can call me ignorant or whatever, but, I can always remember those statues being there and I have never thought of them as a political statement of any kind. But that just shows you I know very little. Thank you for dropping the link to your #MarketFriday and also for joining in this week.

Yeah, thank God for that pandemic, right? 😮

Very nice post Denise, I have never been to Washington DC, thanks for showing me around Union Square.
So clean, glad to see that, but it's amazing how empty it looks. Almost a ghost town.
Enjoy the rest of the day!

Thank you! Everyone here is still telecommuting! So, it is empty. Washington, DC is a wonderful place to visit, especially as most everything is a free entry.

Thanks for stopping by!

That's good. You've made me aware of part of the city. All the pictures are very good, but the ones I like the most are the ones inside the buildings and the ones inside the subway. They have a very natural coloring and great depth. Excellent graphic report, congratulations.

Thank you so much for your kind comment and thoughts on the post. I never think to photograph it as I use it daily, and it loses significance, but, I am retracing my life and taking pictures of the everyday things.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words! Have a great week!

What may be everyday for you is extraordinary for those of us who live in other countries. Keep showing your world. Thank you.

I have learned that and one of the reasons I love #MarketFriday, the sharing of the cultures has been amazing!

Thank you again and I will tell you something. I learn something new almost every day here scrolling through the feed.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for sharing the Union Station @ Washington. It is very grand beautiful, but sad to see that there are not crowded and quite empty currently. I think this pandemic not only cause many sick and death, but also bring deep impact to economy recession.
Thank you @dswigle. Take good care always.

It's true, but, in our case, most of the workers are government employees and allowed to work from home. It is a huge bonus for sure on our economy which is not hit as hard as some.

It has caused much sickness and I can only hope that we are on the road to recovery. Tomorrow! Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words! Have a wonderful week ahead!
