Cruising through Market Friday Challenge | The back alleys of Thai Binh Market

avatar

Hi everyone.. This is yet another extended post on Thai Binh Market in Saigon, Vietnam. The thing is, I had recently found out about this local market that sells both wet and dry provisions. It is located near Phường Phạm Ngũ Lão and many of the locals come here to buy their daily provisions. About 2 weeks back, I decided to check out this market since I pass by this street everyday on my way to work.

You can check out more from my previous post HERE

And last weekend, I decided to do my once a week grocery shopping here but also to get some exercise as well. According to Google Maps, it takes me approximately 15-20 minutes if I walked but 6 minutes if by car or motorbike. Since I haven't marked many steps in the last week, I thought I should get some exercise in the early morning. Okay.. 6.30am isn't that early since the sun is already up and many people were already on the streets - taking their morning walks. I finally realised that the street parallel to my apartment actually has a good walking path which is excellent for jogging.

Though I wasn't jogging, I did my part of speed walking which is what I prefer. I reached the market in 15 minutes and found it already crowded with both buyers and sellers. I tried to stay true to my market list but there were just so many things. I walked around and bought my vegetables & beancurd. I was about to head back when I reached to a somewhat back alley of the market.

One thing about Vietnam is that it's not what's on the Main Streets that one should look out for. Instead, it's those behind each alley that one will find the most interesting and affordable items. And this refers to restaurants, bars, hotels and etc. This is the back alley which I so happen to come across - call it curiosity 😆 I'm really glad that I'm such an explorer at least for wet markets if not I wouldn't be able to find such treasures in this city.

I bought vegetables, prawns, squid, pork and some fruits as I walked along this street. The prices are pretty affordable if I may say so myself. I even noticed an elderly Caucasion man buying fish from one of the stalls.

This is the only photo which I took - an old lady scraping vegetables by the side of the street. Such scenes are very common in most wet markets and no matter how many times I witness this, I never get bored of it. It's like a whole new experience every time. In some way, I feel like I'm getting very localised, guess there is some positive side to this whole awful pandemic that is happening around the world.

Finding back alleys where store keepers sell cheaper is more fun, supporting many who get up early to arrange fresh produce for passers by.

Earning so little, I always support locals who are unable to have a store using whatever way to make a living even from the pavement, where they clean and clear a spot to present their food displays.

You're absolutely right.. Not everyone can afford a permanent stand in the market.
Thankfully, displaying their provisions by the street side and selling is something that is acceptable to everyone.
Plus those who can afford a stand don't complain but the local police do come and disturb.
That is when these illegal sellers start to scramble all over...

Street vendors we have plenty, as you say when the police arrive they disappear quickly. Only way to earn some money, I agree with them, rather turn to trading, it is better than crime of stealing.

@JustinParke here on behalf of ASEAN Hive Community.

Thai Binh, wonder if the spelling is a coincidence, or is there some Thai history in that area?

Your pictures are always worth a thousand words! I love it when you scour the back alleys for more market vendors selling their goods. I love that you support the people that really don't have the means to have a legal store, but, still need to support their family. Better prices and although the selection is normally less, I can live with that.

Good for you, getting out there early and speedwalking there. Good grief, don't you get hot??? It is so hot there. Does your family realize by now that you are addicted to Vietnam and may never want to move back, but, make him move there? Hehehehe... You have seamlessly adopted the culture and people in such a short time. I am not sure how much longer you will be there, but, it will already be a hard transition back!

I love your blogs. You make them so wonderful and I can tell the love you have for the people and for the country. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful culture with everyone. Thank you! I want to thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday! Each week, I post for the challenge to provide a different look of American culture, some of it over the top and some, everyday things. Sometimes, I just show places that I have gone to, all having an entry fee to qualify it for the #MarketFriday tag! It is a challenge to find new things during the pandemic, but, we still have to live, so we have been able to pull it off. It shows off how much we are alike and how different life can be. In the end, it makes it an experience that I look forward to. I appreciate the love and support you give to #MarketFriday! It Is heartwarming to see how many posts into the challenge, including you. Thank you! Truly! Your participation adds a unique flavor to the mix. I just love clicking on the link and having a new world open up, right before my very eyes! Thank you again for being a part of all this! It was lovely! I hope you have a wonderful week!

I can't stop smiling when reading your reply. You're absolutely right to say that I'm more localised than I chose to admit. I've even travel around by Grab Bike & enjoy street food like the locals. After a while, it seems like living here is more comforting than I can imagine. However, it may be I still miss home and my family.
Then again, it's making the best out of everything.. even we're far apart.
There's no point in sulking and feeling down all the time - when we can choose to make a happier day out of it.

I'm glad that I found many interesting ways places to see here.. markets are top on my list since that's the one place I can go and do shopping for my weekly groceries. Unfortunately, shopping malls aren't really my sort of place to go anymore. I find the outdoor local street markets so much more interesting.

I haven't been to a shopping mall in over a year, maybe even longer. If I need something, I will go to a department store, but, when was the last time you saw a store in #MarketFriday? Perhaps the flower place, but, it is really an outdoor market.

I agree! When I was geographically distanced from my family, I chose to have a good time and make it count for something good, otherwise, what is the point?

You are an amazing woman and I am so happy to see you our exploring the world! Have a great evening! xoxo
