The Bailong elevator or the elevator of the hundred dragons, that is its meaning in Chinese, is the highest outdoor elevator in the world, located in the Wulingyan area, within the Zhangjiajie National Park, in the province of Hunan, China, which At 326 meters high (1070 feet) it holds this great record. As a curious fact, this national park was James Cameron's inspiration for the environments in the movie Avatar.

This area was declared by Unesco as a region of panoramic and historical interest in 1992, so this mega construction raised several controversies during its construction, and even today, it continues to produce them, as it is still an "intruder" in a world heritage site.

And as we all know, China is a country of excesses and records, it is the fourth largest country in the world, besides being the most populous nation in the world, to give more support to this idea, this national park also has the largest glass bridge in the world, with a height of 430 meters.

Returning again to the subject I want to talk about today, this structure is composed of 3 covered elevators, for its construction it was necessary to make tunnels and perforations in the quartz wall carefully chosen by the different engineers and architects of the project. Multiple seismographs were also installed in the structure, so that if an earthquake were to occur in the area, the site could be evacuated quickly.

It took an investment of 120 million yuan, which would be about 16.5 million euros for the time, starting the work in 1999 and finishing it in 2002, but shortly after its opening had to close again for safety reasons, returning to be functional in 2003. As an interesting fact, this building has a few meters more than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, although they have a totally different view, jajaja.

This mega-construction achieved three Guinness records for its dimensions and for the speed with which it moved its load, being able to lift 4.900 kg (approximately 55 people per trip), in 1 minutes and 32 seconds from the base to the top of the structure. If we apply mathematics, we would be talking about being able to move about 1.380 people in an hour and 18,000 people in a day, a little more than 1.000.000 kg per day!

But not all are positive things, because it has also raised a lot of criticism from environmentalists. As already mentioned, its location was not chosen by chance, because in addition to the needs of the land to support the structure, this elevator was built in an enclave near Shuiraosimen, one of the most visited landscapes in the park, generating an increase in visits, but also increasing the invasion of "the hand of man" in this world heritage site.

This led to many proposals from different environmental groups, even Beijing Today in December 2001 published that these elevators had been built without consulting the UNESCO committee, as the sites designated World Heritage Sites are not allowed to make new constructions. In fact, many buildings in Zhangjiajie were demolished that year, as the committee in 1997 highlighted the excessive commercial development in the area.

It also received a sanction from the Hunan Environmental Protection Bureau in 1998, after assessing its environmental impact, although we all know how these things end up in a country like China. Many even called for the demolition of the structure to solve the environmental problems, even that its colors were inconsistent with the surroundings, damaging the authenticity and integrity of the place.

Although there are also many people who defend this engineering work, because they argue that this elevator gives visitors the possibility to observe the wonders of the park in a quick way, since otherwise tourists would need to camp in the area to enjoy the wonderful views.

They also defend it from the economic point of view, since its objective was to increase tourism in the area, calculating an income of up to 200,000 yuan per day, about 10 million dollars per year, although this was not necessary, since the park was already receiving 5 million visitors per year in 2000, before the construction of the elevator.

As a conclusion and reflection, a building of this caliber should not be built because of its great environmental impact, no matter how productive it may be. We must take this example so that in the future mistakes like these are not made again, no matter how wonderful these mega constructions may be.
