Six Bad Computing Habits I Grew Up With

avatar

You can re-read the topic again and again, however, before you make a fun of me, I hereby advise you to read this treatise to the end and genuinely ask yourself if you are far from few habits of mine briefly discussed below.

More than one (1) decade ago, I got my first computer system: a combination of monitor screen, central processing unit (cpu), computer mouse and one big black keyboard. I was over joyed because computer system was not common among my peers then, so despite getting a desktop computer, I felt like a king then and could not wait for the ethics and safety measures before I started enjoying my latest and biggest technological tool then.

However, many times, we find it easy to shift repercussions resulting from using technological tools to the technology in use rather to accept it as a negligence of our own actions and attitudes towards precautionary measures. Like I used to say, no technology has advantage(s) and leaves no disadvantage(s) but it is not enough to shift and put all the blames on the technology.

Some of the bad computing habits I grew up with are briefly discussed below

Improper shutting down of computer system

The quest to return to my unfinished work, avoiding re-opening of browser tabs and avoiding termination of all running applications before completely shutting down my system used to drive my action towards hibernation. While it plays well and save, especially in avoiding the aforementioned tasks, yet hibernation has a lot of side effects and among them is that it intensely reduces computer's performance and lifespan. Many times, computer system used to show overheating due to improper shutting down of the system.

Opening too many browsing tabs at once

No doubt I belong to the type that used to open many browsing tabs at once for convenience sake, this is indeed a bad habit that is common even among tech guys nowadays. opening several browsing tabs at once is related to multitasking because every tab you open stores certain part of information in memory usually called 'cache memory' thus, this may leads to inefficiency of the system and one of the reasons why systems fail to responds sometimes. Indeed it is a bad computing habit.

Executing many programs at once

Just like the habit discussed above, running more than one program at a time is called 'multitasking' and the process always request for more memory to carry out all the supposed running programs, as such a a low memory system performing multitasking usually reduce the overall performance of computer system. It is one of the reasons why computer may not respond overtime unless you put the computer Off and ON it later.

Non nonchalant attitude towards backing up data

The quest to finish up the task ahead of me when working on a computer system always result in failure to back up the data, this bad habit usually lead to loss of data. Data backup is very important and highly encouraged because it creates and stores a copy of data in a computer system in case the original data get corrupted or lost. Nowadays, there are many ways to backup one's data and the latest among them is cloud storage, others include Data Backup to Local or USB Disks, Data Backup to Network Shares and NAS and Data Backup to Tapes.

Working for long hours without having break

Most times, I used to get lost once I sit in front of computer system. This is no doubt a bad habit on one's physical health. Eyes strain has been attributed to the effect of staring at computer system for long hours. Research has also revealed the side effect of sitting in a position for long period of time on one's health. Not having enough break is totally discouraged as it does not guarantee maximum productivity.

Not giving computer system enough time to rest

Just like human beings do need break as discussed above, computer system also need break too in order to ensure it works at its best performance. I used to leave my system ON even when it is not in use, as such it puts itself into sleep mode after certain number of minutes without being used or touched. This is indeed a bad habit because computer in a sleep mode reduces the lifespan of a computer system, likewise its performance, overheat is also common to a computer system that is not properly shut down.

Final thought!

Thorough investigation has revealed that many people do not care about the ethics and safety measures of computer system. The fact that we can use the technology to some extent should not make us ignore the ethics and safety measures of such technological tool.

Following the ethics and safety measures will not only ensure computer system works at its best performance, but also ensure a good and healthy lifestyle of the one operating the tool, especially when handling and working with technological tools in general.

There are many other bad computing habits aside from those discussed above, I will like to read your opinions, especially the ones you have found yourself doing either in the past or now.

Thanks for the engagement so far!

I did some of the point that you have mentioned, especially on opening browser tabs. !discovery 15

Hmmm! Indeed opening too many tabs is common among the tech guys. @juecoree! Thanks always for the engagement.

Guilty as charged. I sometimes don't shut down my system in weeks. I just hibernate in order to quickly return to whatever work I might be on. Having to wait for the computer to boot, navigating to the file and opening up whatever document you are working on is too time-consuming afaik. I will try to change though :)

Happy to read your most bad computing habit. Lol. Hibernating a computer system has spoilt more than four of my laptop batteries. Thanks as I always appreciate your beautiful engagement so far!

I have been at this a while now and still learn something new everyday. However, it is always good to be reminded of the basics like these. Very good outline and presentation. Thanks for reminding us to check ourselves on the basics.

I found that I am still doing well on shutting down properly, not opening too many tabs, or running too many apps at once. I do well at making sure I back up my data, but I do need to organize my files better. I also need to do complete shutdowns more often to let my system compeltely rest.

Happy to read from your end. With time you will get over the two. It is common with many people though

Hi @noble-noah you do a tour of those bad habits, that not only you did them, but I also confess I did them too. Also, you brought back to my memory my classes for some years ago, when the first thing I pointed out to students was what they should observe was computers. On the other hand, the technologies associated with computers have helped a lot to mitigate those habits in their users, for example, energy systems. But, at the end of the day, they are still pushed to the limit. Thank you.
