En repetidas oportunidades les he comentado, que varios de mis hijos peludos tienen las ramas bajas del árbol de navidad todas orinadas, todos o la mayoría de los que me leen sabemos que el motivo principal es marcar, en mi caso no es el único lugar donde marcan, lo que la mayoría queremos saber, son las razones de este comportamiento, si te quedas y continuas leyendo sabrás más acerca de este comportamiento de nuestros hijos peludos.
Efectivamente es gracioso ver a nuestros gatos marcar territorio en exteriores si ellos tiene acceso a los mismos, pero no es nada gracioso, ni grato verlo hacer lo mismo en casa y en nuestras narices y así no los vemos con las manos en la masa, luego sabremos que alguno de nuestros hijos lanzó su poderoso rayo radioactivo al sentir ese penetrante olor que es tan fuerte y desagradable, sin mencionar que la mayoría de la veces es difícil de eliminar dependiendo del lugar donde decidan marcar y esto hablando solo de marcaje con orina ya que nuestros bellos hijos peludos marcan también de otras maneras, de las cuales hablaré en otros post.
Primero lo primero las causas por las cuales nuestros gatos pueden estar marcando en casa:
Celo
Las gatitas al estar en celo además de ser detectadas por olfato por lo gatos lo saben también por su orina, ellos a su vez orinan para llamar la atención de la gata en celo y esa orina contiene información de su estado sexual y pretende estimular a la hembra. El propósito es alertar a las gatas de su buena predisposición para la reproducción. Por ello es importante que esterilices a las hembras y castres a los machos, aunque esto no es una garantía de que tu gato o gata deje de marcar territorio, tengo dos machos y una hembra que son terribles.
Delimitar territorio
Si algún animal es territorial por excelencia, ese es el gato. Así que dejan marcas en lugares estratégicos para decirles a otros mininos que el lugar ya es suyo y que es mejor que mantengan la distancia. Al aire libre, esto podría ser una zona donde cazan o un lugar donde descansar. Dentro de casa puede ser la zona donde están el comedero y el bebedero, o la cama de tu minino, tu dirás, no lo creo, pues créelo mi amado Pocholo me tiene como un esclava, pues constantemente marca la zona donde comen el, kapuy y Akiles, por su parte Manchita, le ha orinado la cama a Aquiles y si dejo los platos más de lo que debo, al terminar ellos de comer, pues se mete dentro del plato de Pocholo y simplemente lo orina, una cosa es decirlo otra verlos, da risa contarlo, mas no limpiarlo.
Estres
Como les he mencionado en anteriores publicaciones nuestros mininos suelen ser muy propensos a estresarse (además de que el estrés en ellos es potenciado) y aunque tu los veas muy tranquilos, pueden estar estresados y una manera de expresarlo podría ser comenzar a marcar en lugares extraños o hacerlo mas de normal, tambien podria ser que antes no presentaba este comportamiento y de repente comienza a marcar, podria ser que alguna nueva situación le esté provocando inseguridad o disconformidad y marcar sea una especie de vía de escape. Los cambios de entorno o de rutina pueden provocar este marcaje con orina por estrés: la mudanza a un nuevo hogar, la remodelación de la casa, un nuevo sofá o el nacimiento de un bebé. Los animales son gatos de rutina y los cambios que para ti y para mi pueden ser insignificantes, para ellos son algo traumático.
Comunicación
Si para nosotros los humanos que no tenemos el olfato tan desarrollado como nuestros mininos el olor de orina nos indica que nuestro gato estuvo por allí, imaginate para ellos, es prácticamente una identificación o cédulade identidad de su amigo, si tienes varios gatos en algún momento los habras visto olfataear el orine de otro, podria ser muy probable que al oler el orine de otro de su especie ellos puedan obtener información como, el sexo del otro felino (macho o hembra), cuándo estuvieron ahí, si están sanos o estresados, si están en celo o si quieren que se les deje en paz.
Ahora bien, es importante que sepas que aunque tu gato sepa usar la caja de arena es bastante probable que marque en otros lugares por una o algunas de las razones anteriores y a veces se debe a que nosotros como humanos no limpiamos su caja de arena con la frecuencia y de manera adecuada, esto puede ocasionar que ellos se vean obligados a irse a otro lugar. O si la caja de arena está en un lugar donde ellos no se sientan con privacidad para usarla, ya es pequeña para ellos, o no les gusta la arena o viruta, un punto importante aquí es que a veces los gatos con enfermedades como la artrosis, cistitis, problemas urinarios o alzheimer pueden cambiar sus hábitos, por eso debes estar atento ante estas señales y si notas o crees que no su comportamiento no es por marcaje, debes llevarlo al veterinario. Te preguntarás ¿y cómo se la diferencia? pues una de las señales en la cantidad de orina y la postura lean lo que indicaron en esta publicación.
La cantidad de orina en el marcaje suele ser menor que en la falta de higiene. Sin embargo, esto no es igual en todos los gatos, por lo que la diferencia no se puede determinar por la cantidad de orina expulsada. La señal más evidente para poder diferenciar entre marcaje territorial o falta de higiene es la postura del felino. En general, los gatos al orinar se agachan de cuclillas (ojo, que no es igual en todos) e intentan enterrar la orina con las patas. Al marcar el territorio los bigotudos olfatean primero la zona que quieren delimitar, se dan la vuelta, elevan la cola en vertical, mueven un poco las patas traseras y rocían la orina más o menos en horizontal. Al contrario que al orinar, el pipí cae más arriba, es decir, en la pared, el marco de la puerta o el reposabrazos del sofá, antes de caer al suelo.
En caso de que no pilles a tu gato con las manos en la masa y descubras el charco de orina más tarde, observa si quedan rastros de orina en las superficies horizontales cercanas. Los gatos con falta de higiene suelen orinar solo en superficies horizontales como la alfombra, la cama o el sofá, las zonas de marcaje típicas son objetos verticales como ventanas, puertas, cortinas, paredes, patas de mesas y sillas o reposabrazos de los sofás.

No se si ustedes, pero al leer estas líneas creí que habían presenciado algún episodio dentro de mi propia casa, me pareció ver a Manchita que marca y además sufre de artrosis y a Pocholo y Akiles que quieren ser machos alfas.
La gran pregunta ¿Cómo lo evito?, créeme yo todavía busco la respuesta definitiva, pero en gran parte de la respuesta es evitar estrés, evitar limpiar con exceso de cloro o amoniaco esto los llama a marcar o mejor dicho orinar en el lugar donde sientan esos olores, también puedes utilizar catnip, valeriana o feromonas para ayudar a que se calmen. en mi caso, creo que tengo ya muchos gatos y esto ha ocasionado disputas por territorio.

First of all the reasons why our cats may be marking at home:
Zeal
When kittens are in heat, besides being detected by the cats' sense of smell, they also know it by their urine. They in turn urinate to attract the attention of the cat in heat and that urine contains information about their sexual state and is intended to stimulate the female. The purpose is to alert the cats of their good predisposition for reproduction. That is why it is important that you sterilize the females and neuter the males, although this is not a guarantee that your cat will stop marking territory, I have two males and one female that are terrible.
Defining territory

Stress
As I have mentioned in previous publications, our kittens are usually very prone to stress (besides the fact that the stress in them is enhanced) and although you see them very calm, they may be stressed and a way to express it could be to start marking in strange places or make it more normal, it could also be that before they did not present this behavior and suddenly start marking, it could be that some new situation is causing insecurity or dissatisfaction and marking is a kind of escape route. Changes in the environment or routine can cause this stress urinary marking: moving to a new home, home remodeling, a new couch or the birth of a baby. Animals are routine cats and changes that may be insignificant to you and me are traumatic to them.
Communication
If for us humans who don't have as developed a sense of smell as our kittens, the smell of urine indicates that our cat has been around, imagine for them, it is practically an identification or identity card of their friend, if you have several cats at some point you will have seen them sniffing the urine of another, It could be very likely that by smelling the urine of another of their species they can obtain information such as, the sex of the other cat (male or female), when they were there, if they are healthy or stressed, if they are in heat or if they want to be left alone.
Now, it is important for you to know that even if your cat knows how to use the litter box, it is quite likely that it will mark other places for one or some of the above reasons and sometimes it is because we as humans don't clean its litter box often enough and properly, this can cause them to be forced to go elsewhere. Or if the litter box is in a place where they don't feel private enough to use it, it is too small for them, or they don't like sand or shavings, an important point here is that sometimes cats with diseases like osteoarthritis, cystitis, urinary problems or Alzheimer's can change their habits, so you should be on the lookout for these signs and if you notice or think their behavior is not due to marking, you should take them to the vet. The amount of urine in the marking is usually less than in the lack of hygiene. However, this is not the same in all cats, so the difference cannot be determined by the amount of urine expelled. I don't know about you, but when I read these lines I thought I had witnessed some episodes inside my own house, I thought I saw Manchita who marks and also suffers from arthrosis and Pocholo and Akiles who want to be alpha males.
The big question is how do I avoid it, believe me I am still looking for the definitive answer, but a big part of the answer is to avoid stress, avoid cleaning with excess chlorine or ammonia this calls them to mark or better said urinate in the place where they feel those smells, you can also use catnip, valerian or pheromones to help them calm down. in my case, I think I already have many cats and this has caused disputes over territory.

Jajajaja @actioncats "el poderoso rayo radioactivo", jajajaja, buenísimo; y sí, a veces huele a rayos la orina de nuestros hijos peludos. Muy interesante toda la información que ofreces, en especial eso que mencionas de que hay que cambiar con frecuencia el arenero. En mi caso lo hago todos los días y empleo arena de mi solar (hay una parte del mismo que es muy arenosa); y esto es indispensable, ya que cuando el arenero está sucio es como si nosotros fuésemos a una poceta o excusado que no ha sido bajado o limpiado. Me encanta que trasmitas esta información, tan importante para conocer, atender y cuidar mejor a nuestros gatitos. Un gran abrazo.

Hola amiga @actioncats. He tenido gatos toda mi vida, y menos mal que en los últimos años no he tenido problemas de este tipo. Felizmente, no lidio con la orina del gato dentro de casa. Y confieso que muy pocos he tenido insurrectos 😇🙏 Pero claro, no me he librado de uno que otro chasco pero eso más que todo ha sido mientras están pequeños.
Es muy conveniente saber la psicología de nuestros animales para que llevar la fiesta en paz. No se trata de tener gatos o cualquier mascota, solo por tenerlos, para luego maltratarlos por la incomprensión y la intolerancia. Se pueden educar, pero con la mayor paciencia y amor.
