All eyes on Skip!

Here we go again ...

oh no! Here we go again. It's that time of year again. It's that time again that I'm balancing on the top of my abilities for a week or so and that I need eyes in the back of my head. What happened?

Dogs troubles

It's that time again that our Lana has decided to go into heat. And with that changed from a dog that is fairly social within the pack of 3 to a bitch who can and will not accept anything. She goes from a dog that listens well enough to a dog that does exactly what she shouldn't, and instead of listening, she doesn't listen at all. Poor girl is completely upset by the hormones coursing through her body. But Lana is actually not even the problem in this one. It's not handy that she's obstinate and unruly again…, but other than that I get along just fine with her.

Tripping over the clinging dogs

Only we don't only have Lana in the house, we also have Myla ... and Myla is also much more affectionate in these times. With her sensitive character she feels exactly what Lana is going through, she feels Skipper's tension and she feels that I may also be a bit too tense because of that situation. So as a result, she too clings to me… and I trip over the two ladies as soon as I want to take a step.

Skipper knows it "Lana is in heat"

The gentleman in question, Skipper, also knows all too well what is going on. Lana is in heat! To Skipper it sounds and smells like a big party in which he will certainly play a big part in his mind.

Skipper plays no role at all in Lana's mind, thankfully! Because that means that I can at least keep an eye on 1 dog and call him to order. If Lana was willing, I'd have a double problem. Now it's limited to keeping an eye on Skipper and sending him away from Lana before he gets a chance to jump on her. But as I say, Lana is helping me and she snaps Skipper off her pretty hard...

Lana speaks clear language

Unfortunately, not so hard that he doesn't want to take a second chance. What is it with men and testosterone?? I sometimes wonder if Skipper has brains at times like this. I mean, the language Lana speaks and shows is pretty clear to me anyway. “Stay away from my body you, go f*** yourself!” Unfortunately, Skipper doesn't think that is so clear, and he really wants to take his chance. And not just once, of course, but throughout the day. If not now, maybe in 2 minutes? Um, NO Skipper! It's not allowed NOW, not in 2 minutes and not in 1 hour either! It's just never allowed! Unfortunately, only that a dog does not understand that language. He knows what "NO" means. But seriously has no idea that this just means it's never allowed. Because the word NEVER, is not in his dictionary. That's a step too far for him to understand.

She corrects him

So the consequence of course is that I'm in a focused mode all day with "All eyes on Skip". Be careful not to let it get into a fight. Because our lady certainly doesn't just show her teeth, but also makes sure that Skipper feels her teeth good when he perseveres and tries to get his way. The lady is not afraid and bites him hard. Now, I seriously think a correction from Lana to Skipper is no problem at all. He learns more from that than when I call him to order. But of course that shouldn't go so far that we have to visit a vet because Lana wanted to put him on his number too hard. And if she uses her teeth a little too hard, which happens very quickly with her, there is a good chance that Skipper will no longer accept this. And back on the attack. I don't even want to think about what could happen then. But the vet's costs won't be cheap in such a case...

Prevention is better than cure

So prevention is better than cure, my father would have said when he was alive. There must be pack behavior between the dogs. They need to know where they stand, what their place is, but as a pack leader I have to control this and make sure it doesn't go too far. Because when it comes down to it, I'm the top dog who has the last word. Even if I have to growl and bark as loudly as they can. LOL …

This time it's easier

At the moment, I have to be honest with you that this time, it is going much easier so far than Lana's previous heat. But then there was the difference that Skipper had only just joined us, a rehomer who had yet to find his place in the pack. His trust in us as owners/leaders was yet to get. And he was also much less easily controlled then than he is now. We've come a long way with him… where he came in as a fairly insecure dog, not knowing if he could trust us. And really consciously kept his distance, he has now turned into a dog who loves to be with us, and who also knows that he can trust us not to let anything happen to him. He knows that he has his own place here and that he is at home here, that we protect him from things he finds scary, that we be here for him, and will not forsake him.

Not leaving them alone, not even a minute

Just like Lana knows I also protect her from things she doesn't want. And that for me in these days means making sure Skipper can't bother Lana too much. That if it's enough for Lana and she's made it clear, I'll keep Skipper away from her if he doesn't listen to Lana. In short, these days for me are not days where I can leave the dogs alone. Not even a minute… these days are days when I have all 3 dogs around me all day. And also the only days in the year that I sometimes put a dog apart from the other two, purely to let the hormones of both Lana and Skipper come to rest.

I don't have to split myself in two this time

Luckily I don't have to let Skipper live in the kitchen all day like last year… I don't have to split myself in two, that's really a load of my heart and I hope to keep it that way. But the fact is that I live all day with the idea of “All eyes on Skip” … because his movements are followed by 3 pairs of eyes, all day long, to see what his next move is … He must feel the prettiest dog on earth because of
