Our Homeschool Diary: Skill Unlocked

avatar

Whew! What a week! Homeschooling three is really a challenge, getting them on track and in the mood, most especially. My eldest is falling behind on History and Geography (as usual, not his favorite 🤦‍♀) and so I think I need to step in on that next week. Little Miss is okay, but I need to think of better ways to teach her, that where she won't "get bored".

Little Man's Progress

What I am most excited about this week is my Little Man's progress. He is not my "most enthusiastic" student, as you would see in the picture at the right.

There are times when it is hard to get him to "study", but then when he starts, he won't stop until he is really finished with the task given to him.

"I don't like coloring," he would say. But a little encouragement goes a long way and before I know it, he is already coloring (very nicely and within lines, at that!). He would also call me every now and then to "report" his progress. "I finished one, Mommy!", yey, that calls for a pat on the back! <3

"Almost there, Mommy!", he would call excitedly. He loves to hear words of encouragement (who doesn't) and I love to shower him with hugs and kisses with every feat (and defeat).

Reading and Writing

He is now in KG and until recently, I did not really try to make him write. I don't want to make it a chore for him, so we only do some worksheets whenever he is ready. What I try to focus on are his pincer grip and fine motor skills through playdough, tweezers, buttons, etc.

Until one day, I saw him starting to draw smiley faces. The smileys started to get hair, arms, and legs over time. He loves telling stories with them, too!

The past few days, he surprised me that he can already copy words. Not yet perfect, but getting there. Can you see the "car" that he drew at the bottom of the page? Well, the driver is so happy too!

Little Man was also busy meddling with the Language Arts lessons of Little Miss, that he had advanced to reading consonant blends. I kept on telling him that we need to work on his "Book 1", but he insists on "Book 2" (blends). Okay, then. Book 2 it is!

Since it was already easy for him to read C-V-C words, I tried to ask him to read sentences. He was hesitant at first, saying that "It is hard", but once we started his confidence rose and we kept on at it for a while.

He is ever so excited now, that even it was supposed to be our "rest day" today, he immediately took out his book to study as soon as he opened his eyes this morning. 🤓

Household Chores and Take Aways

Meanwhile, I am trying to involve Kuya more in the kitchen. His knife handling skills give me a heart attack each time, left-handed problems! LOL. I had to also show him the slicing using my left hand - thank heavens I can do both!

Little Miss on the other hand gets better with her take-aways. She kept on asking for more, so I challenged her with millions (with no regrouping) so that she has 7-figures to work on.

Steady Progress

Slow or fast, we work at my children's own pace when it comes to their studies. I also let them mostly decide on what lessons to do, but that needs to be aligned with our school year calendar.

I am happy to be given this chance to be next to my children while they unlock these milestones in their education. We have a long way to go, but for us, we just take it a day at a time.

That's some awesome progress of these kiddos!

I see a fair amount of our son in your little man, although he can't read or write yet he isn't the most enthusiastic with doing it but once he gets going with me and doing some letters, he gets very into it in his own way and will start jumping around. He's very physical with his methods so it takes a bit but I will take progress. I made him a little food art today and I've been focusing on making them into letters to help him learn them. He recognized the letter but didn't immediately say it until I brought it up in his workbook and he instantly said correctly "Y!" so we were very proud of him. Takes a bit of work but it goes well in the end, after some bumps!

I find it funny though that he was bored of the book 2 and wanted to go over to book 2. I don't blame him! He may know it more than you realize but doesn't communicate it well enough until he says let's move over to book 2 instead. Good for him!

Thank you @cmplxty!☺️ It's really a challenge to keep these kiddos engaged with their learning but I guess that's where we have to support them-- find a way they can maximize their potentials. Whew! Parenting and facilitating. It gets scarier each day, but exciting and fulfilling at the same time. I guess your Little One will just surprise you one day of what he knows already. As they say, kids are like sponges, they absorb as much as they are exposed to. 😀

Yeah keeping him engaged is important for sure!

It’s hilarious because they are absolutely little sponges lol he brings things out that we had no idea he remembers and it cracks us up. Totally mimics my wife and I with some of his statements!

What a nice publication, it is beautiful because in the future you can go back and reread it and remember this time, the publication serves to measure the progress they make.

My son did not like to write and I wanted him to do it for pleasure, so I made up an excuse for him to write, for example, I would say, "son, I am going out, will you help me write what you want me to bring you? I don't want to forget it!"
The only thing he wrote was "lollipop", because it took him a long time to write more. As he got older he added new things and I asked him for more, "son please write me a bottle of milk"

It seems good to me what you do to give them words of encouragement and motivate them, that way they learn more.

If we get frustrated, children get frustrated too.

Yes, you're so right. They just need the right motivation, as we all do. ☺️ Thanks for that tip, I'll try that next time too! I just hope they don't put too much on their list. Haha
