Old Posts Not Valued In Steem/Hive Culture - Why?

I've been thinking about why old posts are not valued in Steem/Hive culture. The lack of value given to old posts goes beyond the payout window only being seven days long and reposting of old content not being valued.

It is very apparent on the front end level that this is the case. Steemit.com, the first web front end, never had any effective search functionality. You may chalk that up to Steemit, Inc focusing their efforts on the blockchain code but the fact is that nor is Steempeak or any of the other front ends much better in terms of retrieving and displaying old content. Steempeak does have a portfolio page for photographs that shows the leading photos from photography posts by the author. But that, too, is very slow to load if one wants to look at very old posts and there is no paging or search functionality.

Not so easy to find old content...

Does that have anything to do with the fact the back end is a blockchain and not a traditional database like an SQL database efficiently indexed and quick to retrieve data from? Probably. But the block explorer at steemd.com/ is very fast. You can only search by transaction id, block id or account, though, and that side does not have much load compared to the end user front ends.

But I think the culture has much to do with the fact that the reward system is geared towards encouraging the users to continously creating and consuming new content. STEEM/HIVE are cryptocurrencies after all. As much as we are content creators and curators, the content is not the sole focus of our activity here. This is about stacking up on crypto, too. To devote one's time and skills to creating content on Steem or Hive is to be a crypto investor. On a mainstream platform, what you can earn comes from advertisers or other parties from outside the platform itself and paid out to your bank account in a bank that has nothing whatsoever to do with the platform. If you want to invest in the platform, you need to buy its stock on the stockmarket if it is listed.

Because crypto speculation with STEEM being a quasi derivative of Bitcoin was the only way to pay for the infrastructure and to monetize the content, the users or not even the front ends had to figure out ways to make money off their content. Because old content was worthless monetarily, it was relegated to the depths of the blockchain deep below the top layer on which new blocks are being stacked on top of. Steemit, Inc started monetizing old content through banner ads in late 2018. Splinterlands sells ad space, too. I think this should put pressure on the front ends to develop better search functionalities because, at present, the easiest way to find old posts is to use Google. In the long run, as the use base grows, front ends will be generating more ad revenue from content shown only by them. In order to attract more users, they will have to buy more Hive/Steem or SMT Power to vote on content created through them with. This would create a self-reinforcing economic loop.

But for now, Hive and Steem and the prevailing culture of the platform devalues old content. This is why anyone who values their old posts would do well to back them up on another site.
