A Name That Has Stuck With Me Since Middle School

I can't remember the details as it has been such a long time but it was a social studies assignment.

I'm not even sure how I picked her but I think it was because we shared a last name. Anyway we had to write about someone from the civil war. I'm not sure what I learned about her back then but she keeps coming back to me from time to time, reminding me that we just may have some sort of connection.

Yesterday @travelingcrafter texted me while I was out. It happened to pertain to our grandmother Cordelia Garland. The information was more detailed then most of the stuff I'm able to find when I can get to the library to do some genealogy research.

I texted her back asking where she got the information and she told me. Needless to say we spent most of the day messaging each other back and forth about things we had found. I decided to see if I could find this woman who continues to drift through my thoughts and what I found was this...
...Belle Boyd is the daughter of my 8th cousin five times removed and the wife of my 9th cousin twice removed. I had known she wrote her biographey. A book called Belle Boyd In Camp And Prison but the fact that she was a confederate spy had me intrigued.

I went to do a search so I could make sure I got the correct person and found out she had been married not once but three times. She had a daughter by her first husband before he died. She remarried again a few years later and had four more children before divorcing her second husband and getting married a third time.

Looking at the relationship charts it is interesting to see how she is related on both paternal and maternal lines. Her third husband is related to my maternal grandfather and her father is related to my paternal grandfather which would seem to make her more closely related.

I'm also, according to @travelincrafter, related to Elvis Presley, Jane Austin and Muhammad Alli. 😁😁

If you have a curiosity about your family tree I highly recommend signing up for familysearch.org. You have access to loads of information. I have yet to come across anything requiring a monthly subscription. If you do decide to try it out I would LOVE to see what you dig up.

And all I wanted to do was a quick buzz about this but for some reason the chain has not been very cooperative the last 24 hours. Oh well that's life.

That's so cool that you found some interesting things in your family tree! I was blessed to have an uncle that did some research on our family long ago. He did it before the Internet, and had to write letters on paper and mail them, waiting for responses. He also drove to Court Houses and examined birth and death records, and talked to many family members and wrote down what they knew. His records were amazing, and I have pushed his records further with the Internet via sites like Ancestry.com, Find-A-Grave.com, and others. It's so rewarding and fun, too! Hope you are able to find many more gems in your future searches! 😃

I'm sure I will but my main focus is on piecing together my father's childhood. By the time he was ten he'd lost both his parents. I found in a census after the death of his father one of his adult brothers took him in.

Yes but she can't take credit for all the information found on my dad's side as I have been researching his side for years on and off. It is good to know she has finally gotten the answer she has been looking for. After all Belle Boyd has been topic of discussion between us for almost 9 yrs.

What an interesting family tree connection that led to. It shows that we're all alot more interconnected than we believe. :)

I believe the census has a rule set in place to protect the living. For instance if you were born in 1900 your census chart would not be released until 1950.

Although I believe there is a release every ten years. I'm not heavily into those rules so I'm not sure how exactly that works out.

I'm sure if you went to the census page you would get more accurate info. 😁

You can see from the charts my grandparents names. Have fun. 😉😁

I love geneology! That is so interesting that you done a project about her back in school, then have her coming back into your head, only to find that you're infact related; such a coincidence and in ways it shows the power of the mind. Somewhere in there, you knew there was a connection I'd say.

I done 23 and Me last year, and have been talking to reletives from all around the world. Super interesting. My line on my dads side goes back to Niall of The Nine Hostages, who was one of the kings of Ulster, from the Ui Neill clan, on my family crest the red hand of ulster is on it.

There's an interesting story about the red hand of ulster. It stems from two brothers who were to inherit their kingdom from their father, but to decided a rowing race was held. First one to touch the shore wins. One of the brothers was winning, so the one who lagged behind took out his axe, chopped his hand off and threw to the beach. With that, he won, and anyone related to him has the hand on their family coat of arms.

Ireland was full of small kingdoms back before the Norman invasion in the 1100s, every county in the country was a kingdom pretty much and the division is why Ireland was an easy picking, more or less.

On my mums side, our DNA goes back to The Cheddar Man, who is a caveman they found in England. Pretty interesting, and cool to think bloodlines go back that far.

I also have Mary Stewart Queen of Scotts and Robert the Bruce in my line as told in Boyd genealogy but have yet to get back that far on my tree. 😁
