A Matter of Understanding.

In the beginning, there was nothing, well, once the creator got started there were SOME things. For a while galaxies, stars, planets, life, and the evolutionary forces shaping that life into more complex and adaptable forms danced through time, populating the universe with infinite beauty and subtle variation. The creator’s hand was evident in the vast majesty and diversity of his creations, until eventually beings came into existence that were able to collectively investigate their existence and the laws of the universe around them.

With the advent of intelligence came problems. The vastness and beauty of the universe were unfortunately viewed as a challenge- a question that must be answered by those beings of sharp mind and inquisitive nature, and thus, as time passed, creation lost faith in its creator, for he had failed to bring into being that which intelligent life needed most, a distraction from the disturbing questions brought about by its existence and the monumental ones posed by the scale of the universe.

The creator was unable, in its supreme mind, to understand what it was that was missing in the lives of its beloved subjects; could not comprehend why they were so stupefied by their existence, why they focused so intently on discovering how and why it all worked instead of appreciating its wonder and majesty. And so the benevolent creator wrote the whole lot off as an unsuccessful first attempt, leaving creation to its own devices and setting up shop elsewhere.

Occasionally, every eon or so, the creator would pay a visit to its original universe, and each time was pleased that life had continued for so long unsupervised. However, upon each visit it could see no improvement in the state of obsession that seemed an inherent part of its existence. Inevitably, after a few years of tinkering, the creator returned to more successful attempts at creation as baffled at the cause of their fixation as ever. Upon each visit it seemed their obsession had deepened. In the eon between visits drastic changes began to take place throughout the universe wherever intelligent life had established itself. The surprise at seeing creatures of different species serving the intelligent ones, the changes wrought upon landscapes and the uses to which those intelligent creatures found for seemingly useless resources was a new sensation for the creator. Still the creator could not comprehend how these changes had happened, nor what the benefit was, for across the universe the obsession with understanding prevailed among intelligent life despite the havoc they were wreaking on the beauty of creation.

Eons passed in this manner until once again the creator became bored with the undeniably beautiful, impossibly perfect, yet somehow tame, predictable, stale creations of the later universes and once again returned to check on it’s baffling original progeny.

Across the universe, on every planet that was home to intelligent life, things had changed so drastically they were nearly unrecognizable. The boredom the creator had felt melted away, and instead of surprise… a new sensation, deeper, more profound. What were these steel and glass mountains that had apparently sprung up on soft ground? Where was all the light coming from? What were the bits of metal spinning around so many of the planets. What was all the noise.
The creator finally got a taste of what had driven his creations. For the first time it was faced with something so beyond it’s experience- it finally knew what it felt like to witness so much wonder, so much that was not known. For a being to whom the mysteries of creation are no mystery at all it was an uncomfortable position to be in. But now the creator understood. It had no doubt that all of these things created by intelligent life could be comprehended, could be figured out within the laws of the universe that it had created. Now it was they who had created something new! It had taken them so long- they had first to discover those universal laws and comprehend them, then work within them. Something the creator took for granted. It finally knew why they had been so dissatisfied and worked with such obsession- to understand.
