Doing what's right

It is amazing how we easily criticize other people's shortcomings and mistakes as humans. Especially our politicians of today who seem to do everything wrong in the eyes of most people. They are labelled as liars, greedy, wicked, careless etc. When I hear all these which is not always wrong looking at what they often promise to do and end up not doing in the end, I can only ask one question:

Are you any better?
Will you act differently if you were in their place?

Most people will quickly say "YES" but take a look at their lives and their choices and it tells a different a story. When it comes to doing the right thing, most people have refused to listen to their consciences, some just go with the crowd in doing the wrong thing, some see doing what is right as a decision that brings no gain to them but only losses, some see it as stupidity. But if we can't act justly with the little things and decisions that are within our control and daily lives, how then can we raise fingers to point at others for making wrong decisions because they failed to do the right thing?

I will relate the story behind this post. In Toronto, Canada due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the TTC which is the city's bus transit system has revised it's policies. It no longer accepts coins payments for bus fare or paper transfer to minimize contact with the drivers. Nonetheless, passengers are encouraged to tap their presto cards as usual to pay for their bus fare but to help those who don't have their cards on them or have just coins or for some reason have no card on them, the drivers can permit them on the bus.

But humans being humans, most people have knowingly taken advantage of this kind gesture not to pay fare at all claiming they don't have cards on them even when they do. Some deliberately don't want to pay anymore and why is that? Most people are just like hey I can save a lot of money if I just don't pay but by doing this, you are saying I don't care if it is right or wrong, as long as I save some few bucks. That is the same knd of mindset most people in power have today. Thinking about themselves and themselves only.

So, how dare you raise your finger in hypocrisy to condemn them if you're no different? Doing what is right is not always easy but we must learn to do it to better our World. We live in a World in which honesty and integrity are very rare. You can hardly trust anybody and why is that? People just don't care about others. Everyone thinks only about themselves and their wellbeing. Nobody cares if he/she is doing the right thing or not. Do you ever take a pause and ask yourself, is this the right thing to do? Will my children, family and loved ones be proud of my actions? Is this right?

Where is that human conscience that sets us apart from other beasts? Why have we completely turned ourselves into these strange creatures with no consciences that we will harm others, treat others so badly, trample over others, willingly ruin other people's lives, take advantage of others just to better our own selves? Doing the right thing often looks like stupidity and is of no gain but in the long run, you might be surprised what that little action can do. It can change lives, better lives, inspire a generation and completely change history.
