Why I Avoid IEOs

avatar

Hey Jesspeculators

The cryptocurrency market has changed over last 4 years and watching it transform by showing up every day, it's almost unrecognisable from the lawlessness of the 2017 ICO era, it's still pretty much the wild west but it's calmed down in relative terms, but that doesn't mean there aren't major pitfalls still running today.

The ICO is a great idea, but it was ultimately flawed, creating a speculative bubble where people weren't investing for the long term but just trying to ride shifts in capital and getting in on the spreads they create.

Those who ran ICOs were also majority self-serving and it wasn't about fundraising projects but getting money for not having to deliver on a product, that would see many lose money.

ALLY JANE.png

A new lick of paint

As the ICO market became a toxic tainted one we saw regulation come into play with things like STO's (Security Token offerings) that would need to meet certain legal requirements to run an ICO while exchanges also saw ICOs as a way to keep their trade volumes up and lend their legitimacy to projects, this was known as the IEO (Initial Exchange Offering).

Just like the ICO the IEO sounds like a great idea in practice but what I've noticed is that it's got its own rigged game going. ICO's could be set up by anyone and it was more of a manual submission making it kind of fair and slow to get in a secure your bags before the various exchange listings.

IEOs are run on exchanges and the smart money have backing so they are able to connect to exchanges via API's and put in buy orders faster than any manual bidding by a retail investor.

This leaves Davey day trader and the rest either to pick up what's left or buy-in from the new order book from those who have already secured their position. So you won't get in at the initial price you're getting in at the resale price and hoping new dumb money comes in after you since you're "early enough"

The game isn't in your favour

The whole attraction to IEO's is either to ride the early excitement launch pump or because you really like this project and want to support it. Either way, you're not getting in at the initial price and you're being scalped in the process. Yes, you could make money but be aware that exchanges and other insider traders are the ones setting the price once you finally get in to place an order.

Have your say

What do you good people of HIVE think? Have you bought an IEO before? Which IEO was it and with what exchange? Did you make good gains?

So have at it my Jessies! If you don't have something to comment, comment "I am a Jessie."

IEO appears to be way better than ICO in many aspects. At least, with IEO, scamy projects would be curtailed because, before an exchange adopts your coin, it has to be one that has prospects. Also, IEO brings more trust to the table in that, with ICO, fundraising is carried out on the token issuer's website but with IEO, fundraising is done on the exchange platform.

In terms of scams, yes it's done well in reducing the amount of scams, but what it's also done is centralised who can run an ICO and forcing companies and investors to give exchanges a piece of everything which I'm not a fan of, I think it just creates more centralisation, something we wanted to get away from

I can happily say I wasn't part of the burned people in the ICO era, however the IEO might exclude one from getting in earlier but still relatively safer compare to ICO.
In general terms are we ever going to get a system where it open to everyone one and not earliest of adopters? because by the look of things we have what I will call earliest, earlier, early investors/adopters...

Lol it was fun though throw a ETH here throw and ETH there and see what happens! It was all about the research and cutting through the hype and marketing!

Now it’s all about who sucks up to Binance which I think is pretty much a racket on its own

I don’t think that will be possible the majority of people don’t want to risk capital they would rather piss it away on gucci slippers before they invest as if those slippers are not a guaranteed loss lol

Lol they rather have that gucci on and all other labels on and have that satisfactory feel instead of some crypto investment, funny how we differ.

Oh no those are native platform tokens, I've had Kucoins for years. lol IEOs are ICOS run by exchanges, but in the case of Binance they use BNB as the trading pair so they can pump and dump using IEOs!

As you can tell I'm not the biggest fan of binance

Yes I did write about zombie companies here

Wonderfull! I was concenting in the low rate-problem. But you also wrote about more things.
I found that 20 % of all companies in US are zombies. (at stock-exchange). That is a HUGE problem - most come from low rates and banks that dont want them to die.
Thanks !

That's what I found too but I'm sure if these PPP loans and other loans are not forgivable we will see more companies on the S&P fall into Zombie levels and cannot service their debt. Pretty sure it will continue through, they're not going to let these companies die

" they're not going to let these companies die"

Thats the big problem. Small companies like you and me can die. But when it is big companies the banks and gouverment will hold them under their wings. Frustating.

And because I have to report to you every way I earn crypto :-)

I just installed Presearch in Chrome and get 0,25 token for each search. That will give me 2-3 tokens a day and about 100 in a mounth.

I invested in ICO when it was hot in 2017 but it was not profitable at all for me. Probably not going into IEO but Defi seems to make some sense. Hopefully Defi can keep the market up especially when ETH has a cheaper transaction fee in future with ETH 2.0

I think so too, I hope sharding and staking will help reduce the cost so we can see DE-FI really become super affordable. Would like to see DE-FI on HIVE since we have no transaction fee and even on the liquid or Lightning network, then you can do it with straight BTC now that would be interesting

I don't get the the exact definition of IEO, but I think I haven't bought any
(basically I bought those mentioned here: https://peakd.com/btc/@zuerich/btc-and-altcoins-my-experiences-and-my-standpoint).
Do you have examples of IEOs?

Anything run on Binance Launchpad was an IEO. I did buy BAND but I did so on UniSwap luckily they had a ERC-20 Sale before
