A Fleeting Life , The Coral Garden Massacre

It all started around Coral Gardens in the mid-1960s. Rashim, an orphaned Rasta boy who lived as a pauper, was always singing softly in the square to get some food. He, as well as many Jamaicans, began to enjoy singing reggae and proclaiming the style that The Wailers had started from Kingston. Rashim, in spite of wandering the streets and without food, always lived happily and pleased the audience that was present where he was singing, the hat was used to collect the rewards.

Rashim would always start by singing the song The Toughest, a single that could be heard in the squares by the voice of Peter Tosh, this song became popular among the people of Negril in Seven Miles, where some characters like Robert Marley and Peter Tosh himself would gather to improvise. Rashim would also improvise to the reggae beat all over Negril.

Under the sun I'm looking for the bread
I sleep every night in a box
with dirty clothes they see me go by
my joy I show by singing
with Jah's blessing

Rashim, not only sang to cheer up the audience, he also liked to help the elderly with the bags and to help them cross the street. He was an exemplary child in spite of being an orphan and living without any education. Every now and then he would see himself kicking a can playing football as he had no ball, every day he was very active.

One day, Rashim was not walking around the outskirts of Coral Gardens, his chants were not heard in the spaces of the square. Rashim had disappeared, some rumors were that a group of white people with beards had been the ones who took Rashim, they were sent by the prime minister to take prisoner or dead the Rastafarians of the place, several young people have disappeared until today.

Many regret the disappearance of young people like Rashim, who gave much joy to the community regardless of their social status, some predicted a good future for him as a singer, but social hatred cut off the aspirations of Rashim and other young Rastas who were managed to rise at that time.

Below are the lyrics of the song The Toughest published in 1963 and re-launched in 1996 by the voice of Peter Tosh and which Rashim sang happily as an inspiration to live.

Anything you can do
I can do it better
I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)
I can do what you can't do
You'll never try to do what I do
I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)

Stop from doing wrongs
Change your foolish plans
Stop from doing wrongs
Live up like a man

I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)

Now my little brothers
You got to be good
Do what's right
Don't be bad-minded
Take what's yours, and
There'll be no fuss nor fight

Anything you can do
I can do better
I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)
I can do what you can't do
You'll never try to do what I do
I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)

Stop from doing wrongs
Change your foolish plans
Stop from doing wrongs
Just live up like a man
I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)

Now my brothers
You got to be good
Just do what you know is right
Don't be bad-minded
Just take what's yours
And there be no fuss nor fight

Anything you can do
I can do it better
I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)
I can do what you can't do
You'll never try to do what I do

I'm the toughest
(I'm the toughest)
I'm the toughest
I'm the toughest
Anything you can do

I can do better
I'm the toughest
I'm the toughest
I'm the toughest
I said I love my brother
I said I love my sister

I love your imagination - brought to life. Your stories make me feel as if I’m there with the characters. Request that photo and you can write us a story of a real rasta boy from Negril, Jamaica

Respect
