Happy Birthday Little Ricky (3 Years Old!)

avatar

We Made It!

It's hard to believe that it's been three years already, but here we are. It's been an extremely exhausting time, and @little-ricky has not been an easy child by the farthest stretch of the imagination. However, being that (I believe) this has to do with him being an intelligent and inquisitive kid I won't complain too much. But maybe just a little.

Ricky says cheers with his milk

So when we got up in the morning, he says "Daddy. Milk."

I relied, "OK sure. Do you know what today is? It's your Birthday!"

He didn't skip a beat, then immediately stated "CAKE."

It was so funny because he had the most serious expression. Since we are having a party after Amanda gets back from her meditation retreat, I held off on the cake and just got him some frozen yogurt which he was perfect happy with.

Trip to the LA Zoo

Of course we had to do something fun, so I went ahead and took him down to the LA Zoo, since we already have a membership there. Sadly, we got a year long membership but this is only the second time we've been in several months. We'd better get some more trips in before it ends up being a waste of hard earned cash.

As always with him, going to the zoo is more about becoming an animal than it is about looking at animals. He always gets excited about the animals but once he gets there he spends most of the time climbing and crawling around the place, running by the animals not paying much attention to them. That is with the exception of the elephants. He really does like to stop and have a look at them, even though the one he likes the most is a pretty sad looking creature.

2Y1A6580.jpg

It always looks so sad and scrawny. I think it might just be old. Or the fact that it is stuck in a confined space. Who knows. One thing that is really weird about this zoo is that both instances that I've come the enclosures have seemed to be mostly empty. It is really strange. I'm not the only one noticing it either. Several people were complaining that there were hardly any animals anywhere. I know that sometimes they are hidden or removed for some reason, but I swear the enclosures were at least 60% empty. I don't know if I just show up at weird times.

At any rate this had very little effect on the birthday boy. He happily ran around and played with the dirt and leaves. To my dismay he avoided the shade at all cost leaving me with a slight sun burn. I knew I should have put on some sun screen! I guess accelerated aging is in my future.

It was a great day out with my little guy. It's been a weird couple of weeks here on my own with him. I must admit that I was a little bit stressed out being the only parent for a while. I have finally gotten into the groove, but tomorrow it's time to head back up to Twentynine Palms to pick up @afturner. I will be glad to have her back home so that I can at least get the occasional break! The funny thing is, Ricky hasn't even noticed that she left. Haha! Everyone says that this is a good sign that he feels safe and loved.

Thanks! The funny thing is, I don't even know how he associated cake with birthdays. He hasn't really ever been to a birthday party. Maybe he learned at daycare?

Happy birthday to little Ricky. What's better than seeing your own kid happy, man? That's really great to see. I'm so glad you're having a great time together and I hope you have many more happy years together.

Thanks a lot. I am really looking forward to many years as well! I can't wait for him to get a bit older, but at the same time he seems to be growing too fast!

Oh man. Haha. Dude I think I would die if I had another one. Mostly because this one is an absolute maniac! I almost passed out a month ago when my wife was late and I thought she was pregnant again. Lol!

Wow, you son's birthday is near mine. I just did a post on mine the other day. He's a lucky guy to have such a cool birthday ;) Also lucky to have such a cool dad to take such great care of him. Going to the zoo is always fun for kids. My kids loved going there when they were that young. They still love going there, but my oldest is starting to get bored of it now (he's 10). That elephant looks like the one here. The one at our zoo is old and looks to be in bad health. Our zoo has an excuse that it's free so the only funding they get is from the city and whatever people donate, but even so, I imagine they can't afford to treat the animals very well and that always makes me sad.

Anyway, happy birthday, Ricky! (Incidentally, we considered calling our first son Rikki, which sounds a lot like Ricky. We were trying to find names that worked both in Japanese and English. So needless to say, I love your son's name!)

Yeah I am kind of attached to the name as well. My dad, me and now little Ricky all have the same exact name. I wonder if he will name his future son Richard as well?

So is 10 a fun age or is he getting moody now? I will be sad when my little one stops wanting to give me cuddles. Although at the moment it is a bit overwhelming how much he clings/climbs on me. I need to work out more so that I will be able to keep up with him!

Oh wow, three Rickys in a row! That's pretty cool.

He has his moments of moodiness, shadows of the teenage years to come I suppose (and I fear), but mostly he is still very clingy. He also always wants to cling to me, climb on me, play with me. He still wants me to sit with him as he goes to bed every night until he falls asleep. It's sometimes overwhelming, as you say, but I try to enjoy it as much as I can, because I know it won't last forever.

My 6 year old, now, he is already much less clingy than his older brother. Funny how they are so similar in some ways but so different in others.

Hahaha, 😃😃 now you have a glimpse of what single parents might be facing, but for little Ricky not to feel his mom's absence I think that's a good one, you are doing a good Job!! Well done.

I wish little Ricky all the good things life has to offer and in good health of course.

Plus I wanted to ask, how did you upload that personalized gif, I will like to do mine soon.

Yeah it's funny because I got a call from Amanda a bit ago and she asked Ricky if he was going to come get her and he said no. Haha!I know he doesn't understand but it is still kind of funny.

I made the gif using Google photos on my phone. I just took a picture with motion photo turned on. Then if you open the photo in Google photos, then tap the hamburger menu (three dots) you should be able to find an export button where you can select gif as output. Then you can just drag it into your post like a normal photo. I hope that helps!

You need to give a medal, not every father can cope with a 3 year old child for so long. This is the most interesting age, they do not sit still for a minute and you need to constantly monitor them
Happy birthday! Let it grow healthy

Sometimes it feels like I deserve a medal. But I would be happy with a day off and a massage!

Looks like it was a pretty perfect day for his birthday. I guess the good thing is when he is older, he isn't going to remember that most of the cages were empty, he will just remember that you spent time with him and took him to the zoo.

I hope so. Could you imagine if as a teenager he were to ever accuse me of not spending enough time with him. Haha!

I think I will try the zoo again in a few weeks and see if it's any better. We shall see!

Oh yeah, you know that's coming anyway! In a heated moment and not really meant. We were silly when we were teenagers 😃

Congratulations on three years with your little one! I can tell from your post that you're a loving and dedicated father.

I can imagine that being a single parent for a few weeks was stressful, but it sounds like you're doing a great job. It's also great that Ricky hasn't even noticed that his mom is gone. This is a good sign that he feels safe and loved.

That is so sweet - sorry I missed that to upvote in time. I remember when he was born and followed quite a few of the episodes you posted.
This thing with the zoo is sort of odd, but understandable - here in Vienna at the Zoo, particularly in either very hot or very cold weather, the animals go inside. In some you can actually also go in and see them through the glass. The modern enclosures are such that they are supposed to be good for the animals, so for example we have one for wolves where it is actually rare to see one since it is built like a natural habitat with lots of vegetation and dens. Wolves got no use for people and rather hide.
I used to have a pass years ago, but I have not been there in ages.
Here I even have a page on their website where visitors can register and post their photos: https://www.zoovienna.at/foto-community/otto_rapp/
