Normally I'm not the meme-maker, but yesterday's events, visuals, and my wife's indignation provided so much material that I simply could not resist.

The Background Story

If you follow the news you will know that former Bolivian president Evo Morales was forced out of office yesterday. He applied for political asylum in Mexico, and was promptly accepted. I didn't spend too much time pondering this situation, until my wife came home from work, and could not talk about anything else. She was quite understandably upset about this.

Regardless of how you feel about Evo, the core of the situation could not be ignored: he was the former leader of a fellow Latin American country, entering Mexico on his private jet, carrying with him who knows how many assets, from who knows where. Okay, we may not know, but it can be assumed that it's a lot, and that it is not only his personal savings...

From the Perspective of a Human Rights Defender

The real reason why my wife was so furious about Mexico granting immediate asylum to Evo, is that in her work as a human rights defender she encounters situations on a daily basis where asylum seekers are turned down and repatriated without any good reason whatsoever.

More often than not, they have to spend days, weeks, or even longer at detention centers, waiting for their cases to be decided upon. Almost always there are insane bureaucratic hurdles, where the asylum seeker has to present the right documentation, in the right format, at the right time. The requirements seem to be arbitrary and can change unexpectedly, and many of her clients are sent back to their countries of origin. Many of them come from Venezuela, but also from Central American countries, where their lives and well being are threatened.

Illustrating the Special Treatment

While she kept ranting about Morales, who is so far above the law that none of these things would apply to him, she showed me a picture. It was Evo, sitting on his private plane, with his feet up, smiling into the camera. The perfect image of a political asylum seeker! Oh, the irony.

So I asked her about the details: Would he be required to spend any time at the detention center, like every other refugee? Would he be sent on the same type of paper-chasing run-around as her less affluent clients? Is there a possibility of being sent back unexpectedly, even though supposedly his asylum had been granted already? Of course not!

So, I decided to take some information from the pamphlet her organization has made, reminding people who want to ask for political asylum in Mexico about the most important things to keep in mind. The list includes things like having the paperwork ready a day before arriving, and not lying to the officials. On their own these points look like useful things to know. But placed under Evo's picture it just screams sarcasm!

So I put it all together in a meme. I don't know if it's a particularly good one, but it highlights the inequality in a case where both sides, Evo Morales and the leftist Mexican government of AMLO, should supposedly be champions of it. Feel free to copy, share, and distribute the meme, if you think that its message should reach others.

La Historia de Fondo

Si sigues las noticias, sabes que el ex presidente boliviano Evo Morales fue obligado a dejar el cargo ayer. Solicitó asilo político en México y fue aceptado de inmediato. No pasé demasiado tiempo reflexionando sobre esta situación, hasta que mi esposa llegó a casa del trabajo y no pudo hablar de nada más. Estaba comprensiblemente molesta por esto.

Independientemente de cómo se sienta acerca de Evo, el núcleo de la situación no puede ser ignorado: él fue el ex líder de un país latinoamericano, ingresó a México en su jet privado, llevando con él quién sabe cuántos bienes, de quién sabe dónde . De acuerdo, puede ser que no lo sepamos, pero se puede suponer que es un montón, y que no se trata solo de sus ahorros personales ...

Desde la Perspectiva de una Defensora de Derechos Humanos

La verdadera razón por la que mi esposa estaba tan furiosa por el hecho de que México otorgara asilo inmediato a Evo es que, en su trabajo como defensora de los derechos humanos, encuentra situaciones cotidianas en las que los solicitantes de asilo son rechazados y repatriados sin ninguna razón.

La mayoría de las veces, tienen que pasar días, semanas o incluso más en los centros de detención, esperando que se decidan sus casos. Casi siempre hay obstáculos burocráticos locos, donde el solicitante de asilo debe presentar la documentación correcta, en el formato correcto, en el momento correcto. Los requisitos parecen ser arbitrarios y pueden cambiar inesperadamente, y muchos de sus clientes son enviados de regreso a sus países de origen. Muchos de ellos provienen de Venezuela, pero también de países centroamericanos, donde sus vidas y su bienestar están amenazados.

Ilustrando el Tratamiento Especial

Mientras seguía despotricando sobre Morales, que está tan por encima de la ley que ninguna de estas cosas se aplicaría a él, me mostró una foto. Era Evo, sentado en su avión privado, con los pies en alto, sonriendo a la cámara. ¡La imagen perfecta de un solicitante de asilo político! Oh, la ironía.

Entonces le pregunté sobre los detalles: ¿se le exigiría que pasara algún tiempo en el centro de detención, como cualquier otro refugiado? ¿Lo enviarían en el mismo tipo de persecución en papel que sus clientes menos pudientes? ¿Existe la posibilidad de ser enviado de vuelta inesperadamente, aunque supuestamente su asilo ya había sido otorgado? ¡Por supuesto no!

Decidí tomar algo de información del folleto que su organización ha hecho, recordando a las personas que desean solicitar asilo político en México sobre las cosas más importantes a tener en cuenta. La lista incluye cosas como tener el papeleo listo un día antes de llegar y no mentir a los funcionarios. Por sí solos, estos puntos parecen cosas útiles para saber. ¡Pero colocado debajo de la imagen de Evo, solo grita sarcasmo!

Así que lo puse todo junto en un meme. No sé si es particularmente bueno, pero resalta la desigualdad en un caso en el que ambas partes, Evo Morales y el gobierno izquierdista mexicano de AMLO, supuestamente deberían ser sus defensores.
