So I'm an internet entrepreneur from Africa and I'm always looking for new opportunities to generate value online. Globalisation allows me to trade with people from all over the world earning in local, foreign and cryptocurrency.

Africa has embraced technology with open arms and used as a way to curb the brain drain which sees many skilled individuals moving to foreign countries for opportunities.

It has also seen the influx of foreign currency and investment through individuals and companies setting up digital businesses on the continent. I do feel this is only the beginning and as we roll out better infrastructure it will bring about fantastic opportunities for the region.

Are centralised services really secure?

As you can tell we're a resourceful bunch and always willing to make a plan, some of it not so legally but hey this is Africa.

I recently watched a documentary on Nigerian and Ghanian scammers called Cafe Boys who spend their time using centralised services like Facebook, PayPal and the traditional banking system to scam millions of dollars from people in first world countries like US, Canada, UK and Australia.

It really got me thinking about the perceived safety of these applications and how the surveillance isn't really for your safety at all and only for corporate benefit. You get all of the downsides with none of the supposed upsides.

Closed systems make for the best places to hide

We're often told that cryptocurrency is used for nefarious activity and that's why we need regulations in place to protect the consumer, but how well as that really worked in the traditional system? Is it perfect? Not by a long shot and criminals prefer it because they understand it.

I'm not saying there aren't scammers on cryptocurrency sites and applications because they are, they will find any place where they can take advantage of a users ignorance or gullibility and we cannot always protect against it.

However, having an open system allows you to review a users activity and make decisions for yourself. Information is power and as much as people can bullshit, data doesn't lie.
