Die Kieferneule ist ein Nachtfalter aus der Familie der Eulenfalter (Noctuidae). Der Falter fliegt von März bis Juni in einer Generation. Die Kieferneule saugt an den Pollen von Birken, Weiden und Schlehen. Das Weibchen legt seine Eier an die Waldkiefer (Pinus sylvestris). Von deren Nadeln ernährt sich die Raupe bis zur fünften Häutung. Als erwachsene Raupe verlässt sie die Kiefer, um sich am Boden unter Moos zu verpuppen. Dort verbringt die Kieferneule den Winter, um im zeitigen Frühjahr zu schlüpfen.

The pine beauty is a moth from the family Noctuidae. The moth flies from March to June in one generation. The pine beauty sucks on the pollen of birches, willows and sloes. The female lays her eggs on the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The caterpillar feeds on its needles until the fifth moult. As an adult caterpillar it leaves the pine tree to pupate under moss on the ground. There the pine owl spends the winter to hatch in early spring.

In manchen Jahren kann sich der Falter stark vermehren. Diese Massenvermehrung fördert allerdings auch Parasiten, die diese Art wieder dezimieren. So findet im Folgejahr der Parasit kaum einen Wirt und die Population der Parasiten geht ebenfalls stark zurück. So kann sich die Kieferneule in den Folgejahren wieder ausbreiten. Natur im Gleichgewicht! 😀

In some years the moth can reproduce strongly. However, this mass reproduction also encourages parasites that decimate this species again. In the following year the parasite hardly finds a host and the population of parasites also declines sharply. Thus the pine owl can spread again in the following years. Nature in balance!
