Save A Friend, But Also Spare An Enemy
A few years back, I saw a particular Deadpool movie and in one of the scenes, the colossal Tin Man was advising Deadpool in connection with his actions to fight and kill off the people he perceived as his enemies. In the words of his advice, he said and I quote:
There are four moments in one's life that are very important, which matter so much and they are; the moment you conquer a flaw, make a sacrifice, save your friend, and the moment you spare an enemy.
These words became so clear to me and I quickly realised that we have so much been concerned about the first-three, but have placed less or no emphasis on the fourth one - sparing an enemy. Now I ask you, what is now the purpose of mercy if a moment like this is overlooked? Remember that no matter how friendly you are, you are still someone's enemy, but it does not automatically mean that you are bad. Now imagine if everyone was to wish for bad to be done to the people that they call enemies, do you think you will be exempted?
It is saddening when you hear people wish for bad things on others and when you ask why, every explanation will be pointing towards enmity. Just to let you know, the grand idea is to build and consolidate on friendship, not to create enemies. More often than not, the people that think that others are their enemies are actually the real enemies. In life, one thing that should lead you is love, not hatred. It is through love that we can show mercy, not because they merit it nor because they are qualified for it but because of your love for humanity.
It is worthy to note that everyone may not be your friend. Yes, you have the exclusive prerogative to choose your friends. However, that someone does not make your friend list does not mean that they are automatically your enemy. You know you cannot predict the future right? There are times that the same person you regarded as enemies yesterday may be the one to raise you today. Imagine if you had not spared them when you considered them enemies, you would have missed out of their beautiful moments today. This is just to let you know that enemies can turn friends, so your actions of today should also put the future into perspective.
Even if you do not agree with someone's opinion, views, or ideology and they do not agree with yours, it does not make you enemies, and both of you can still coexist. It takes a considerable amount of mental maturity to understand that everyone must not agree with your ideas and you are not to agree with everyone's own, but you can also welcome the idea without being mandated to agreeing with it. More so, what many people see as enmity is just conflict in ideas. You have to understand that the world is not and will not be run on solo idea by just one person, so you do not have to enforce your ideas on people. Do not go about creating an illusion of enmity.
Another thing to note is that at some points, people may step on your toes (maybe mistakenly or otherwise), people will disagree with you, and offences will definitely come but then, there is also a place for forgiveness and mercy. The truth is that even you are not perfect and you have your own flaws and have offended others, so you should not expect someone as flawed as you are to treat you with perfection. It is also true that you have enjoyed mercy and forgiveness at some points. You are also expected to reciprocate it to someone, at least for the sake of your humanity. It is not every time that judgement will follow after offence. You can let mercy and forgiveness to prevail, not because they deserve it but because you are the one that actually deserves peace of mind.

If we act in bad faith we will see enemies everywhere, but if on the contrary we act in good faith, those apparent enemies will only be beings to whom we will offer understanding.
