Movie Review #41 -The Wizard of Lies: An inside to the biggest Ponzi scheme in history

Building an attractive plot through a technical atmosphere where the main ingredient is the management of capital and the embezzlement of money is not easy, because it is that kind of plot that can usually become tedious very fast; however The Wizard of Lies manages to create an accelerated and super exciting rhythm through a very well-told story, a detailed story, and fascinating storyline transitions.

The Wizard of Lies is a film focused on an intense and super interesting drama, a drama that lets us explore a clandestine world where the money giants hide to do what they want, a world of vices and people who live for the money. The plot of this film allows us to go step by step through the entire judicialization process that came from one of the largest Ponzi schemes in world history being uncovered, a scam that touches the highest spheres of the North American economy to the point of destabilizing its economy and jeopardizing the enormous flow of capital from the world's most "powerful" country.

The entire journey that the film makes through the life of Bernie Madoff's is incredible because it allows us to see how a man managed to deceive the most powerful people in the world through promises and false positives, a man who managed to embezzle more than 20 billion dollars without raising suspicion and without saying anything to his family, because yes, this is not a conspiracy film where we will see the process of money laundering and misappropriation of capital by a super investment fund, here we will see how a man decides to surrender and tell everything to finally rid his conscience a little.

As I told you in this film there are no conspiracies or many political touches, something that perhaps would have contributed much to the plot; here what we will see are the consequences that such a grotesque secret sort in a family that was at the top of American society, a family that was destroyed to the point of being put under a witch hunt by the media who sought to take full advantage of the situation without caring who was or not covering up such a scam. It is impressive to see those scenes of frustration, sadness, and rage that were generated from the media bomb that was created as a consequence of the scam and the largest capital theft in history.

The film unfolds with a very good rhythm, yes, at times the plot falls away and comes close to being boring; but all this is because the film constantly shows us scenes of the different members of the family facing the consequences of their father's acts, acts that they didn't know about but that made them the target of the people anyway. Something that the film achieves fantastically is to transmit that atmosphere of guilt, melancholy, and anger that covers the characters through situations where we see how they vent and try to move forward despite having lost everything.

This is a film that I liked very much for the informative factor that has, it is true that it does not have the most entertaining script, but one very entertaining because we can explore the entire facade that was behind one of the largest investment companies in the United States, It's really fascinating to discover all the details behind the money laundering that Bernie Madoff's constantly used to float and above all it's incredible to see how this man was able to collect more than 20 billion dollars that in the end seem to have vanished, this man took all that money and progressively spent it to give himself the best life he could. The whole plot structure of the film is great thanks to the subtle visual contributions where we see the reflection of the money, throughout the film we see how were the lives of these people who lived mostly in a bubble created by Bernie Madoff's and his Ponzi scheme.

Finally, if you like informative films that touch on topics such as capital investment and the management of assets on Wall Street you should see this film because it is basically an inside to the vices that are behind the management of large investments.
