MOVIE REVIEW: "Shut In" (2016)

Dread Central

Synopsis: Mary Portman is a widowed child psychologist (after her husband is in a car accident) who lives in a detached house in rural New England with her stepson. In the midst of a severe winter storm, she must find courage and a way out to rescue a child with whom she has a strange affinity.

Suspense is a type of movie genre that is rooted in many sub-levels, including suspense related to the psychological side of human beings in general and the instances by which it can be worked on has resulted in many excellent / great / good ones. movies ... Just as it also resulted in bad and terrible copies, as is the case of this movie (which is there in the middle between bad and very bad).

Pocilga

After The Ring, actress Naomi Watts has been trying to hook a part of her career in thriller movies... But after that first try (very good, by the way), she's not getting lucky and has been choosing poor quality projects. In one of her most recent bets, she even has a potentially good character at hers hands... But the character's power (which really has considerable strength) lies only on paper and make her talent totally wiped out.

The plot is poorly written, poorly developed and very slurred (and when it is showing the few signs of movement... it is practically towards the end of the third act), completely wasting all its energy in disastrous suspense scenes (mainly because they are too artificial ... some of them even cause some discomfort due to their amateurism) and in dramas that even sound promising but, also leave everything on paper. By the way, it seems that everything in this movie is just on paper in its less uninspiring form.

Observer

Unfortunately, the whole movie does not have a single interesting character at all (the exception would be the plot twist which, in an attempt to impact the viewer by revealing the true face of one of them, turns out to be something bizarrely badly thought out and also poorly developed) and the irony in that fact lies in the good cast headed by Naomi Watts, who is totally untapped by a direction more lost than the plot itself. The amateurism surrounding this movie really seems to be everywhere.

Speaking of direction, Farren Blackburn's work is an example of how not to direct a movie (there is a noticeable lack of quality in his work). Besides not knowing what to do with the script (basically he doesn't know if he invests in drama or suspense... and without being able to do well on any side, makes everything worse when you decide to mix them) he offers nothing new to the audience, turning the movie into a true doldrums hard to follow and that at its end it becomes totally forgettable.

Papo de Cinema

The narrative of the movie is constructed in a way that holds the viewer to some extent, but it doesn't take long for the card-narrative castle to fall with a single breath... Evidencing the script's lack of strength as a whole (although at all times the film insists on wanting to look like this... especially in its most dramatic attempts). Not holding onto its own leg a story that is not so complex, the movie simply does not know the correct direction to lead the plot. It all sounds like a bad, unfinished script that obviously needs a lot of repairs throughout its structure.

By choosing to spend most of the story at night, not even in this aspect can the movie save itself... Tthe kind of photography chosen by the production doesn't help the movie at all (but limited to a sometimes overly dark atmosphere - without actually having a need for this to happen - added to the cold weather based on a blizzard... in fact, much of the failed attempts at "scares" present in the script come out of those moments) and editing the scenes makes it pretty uninteresting (because in a way, they become disconnected).

Film Clicks

Shut In has a very interesting proposal, but it's amazing how the movie boycotts itself as it tries to develop (because everything is an unprecedented mess) and the impression is that a very good story could have been told, but because of a very poor execution, the movie is a very sleepy experience that at least it could have been more interesting if it had received better treatment.

I feel as though there are a lot of movies out there that seemed like a good idea on paper, but just don't come together in the end. I had been looking at this one and felt that it was a nicely done trailer, but based on what you have written here i think my time would be better spent elsewhere. The new monthly free games just came out on PS network, maybe i'll do that instead! :)
