MOVIE REVIEW: "Super Size Me" (2004)

Design Context

Synopsis: During a month's time, a director eats only from food produced and marketed at the famous McDonald's fast-food chain. He shows the video diary of the terrible results he experiences while evaluating the company and its persuasion methods.

If you are one of those addicted to eating fast food whenever you have any opportunity and use the dumbest excuses to be able to consume them without having too much weight on your conscience (which is convenient, it is just a beautiful act of self-sabotage)... I strongly recommend that you continue reading this review because it is very likely that after you finish it there will be a change - or at least a good and long reflection - about your eating habits.

Everyone is already tired of knowing how harmful are artificially prepared foods and this is not a recent warning ... Quite the contrary, for years there has been talk about the subject in various communication channels (inside and outside the TV / Internet). However, the exacerbated consumption of this type of food has become - unfortunately - increasingly increasing among people (and a clear example of this is present in American culture, which needs no further comment because it has been portrayed to exhaustion in so many movies) and a real battle against this dangerous culinary consumption has been fought with great force.

Warnings against this type of feeding are everywhere. The union against them comes from anonymous people, world organizations, celebrities, NGOs, health professionals, and they all use social media to strengthen their discourse and make it broader and impact as many people as possible. So it was with this intention that director Morgan Spurlock decided to venture out on this indigestible food journey and show a frightening backstage that is hidden and may not be known to the general population.

In addition to direct with noticeable efficiency (containing very few failures and a pace that is sometimes too slow) and insane creativity to portray such a serious subject (it does so without projection becoming too exaggerated or caricatured) in such a simple way and totally connected with the reality of the facts. He is also responsible for the bold and determined script (which contains a clear and extremely straightforward message... as if pointing the index finger at the audience accompanied by an angry warning sign) and also acting in a serious manner (but at the same time fun)... That is, he does a triple job and can stand out in all of them.

This experiment (which is built on a documentary bias) lived by Spurlock consists of the following dynamics: he only needs to eat at McDonald's restaurants, eating three meals a day for an uninterrupted month. In the midst of this crazy and brave endeavor, he makes strong and relevant comments about the fast food culture in the United States and spares no effort to show in himself all the effects (physical and mental) that this type of food can provoke.

The artistic content of the work shown here has a tremendous force and deals with the subject with plenty of maturity and a good bit of humor. Although unsuccessful in all its onslaughts, it is a fierce critique of a contemporary society that seems to misunderstand (or if it prefers to ignore the facts... that are so evident) the harms that are present in this food culture. and also, how an empire as powerful as McDonald's could be built on such a rotten foundation as its mainstay.

Going a little further, the script can entangle and transcend the theme beyond the boundaries of a single company and put all those selling similar products into the focus of the discussion (including those that disguise themselves as "healthy policies" to hide their shortcomings) and this all generates an even bigger and more complex buzz. No doubt this work was a very clever way that Spurlock found to portray the marketing mindset in an irreverent and disturbing way.

Oscar Wiki

Super Size Me is so much more than just a movie, it's a loudly loud red alert that serves as a public utility material for people (especially junkie food junkies). Be prepared to face a sad and worrying reality that fast food chains try to hide at all costs from their consumers and how these foods can undermine the health of any human being who overdoes it.
