Three Tune Tuesday Thinking Back About my Two Years In Frankfurt

avatar

So I will be on time for @ablaze Three Tune Tuesday this week. I always think music brings back memories so the three songs this week remind me of summer 2013.

I alway reminisce about the Summer of 2013. Probably the best year of my life. I was living in Frankfurt setting up a new flagship retailer for a famous clothing retailer that goes by the letter "P". Back then it was a 4 year holiday living in Germany so myself and the other Irish spent our evenings in a lovely little pub called the Anglo Irish in a place called Sachsenhausen close to the Main river. Now it wasn't lovely but it was kinda like Cheers. When you went in everybody knew your name and you could chill out and watch some football or just talk to the person next to you. I met so many interesting characters up at that bar. I met a secret service guy who is now looking after sleepy Joe. When Biden came to Ireland before Obama stepped down, I got a call and I visited his hotel in Mullingar and met my friend.
I met a master whiskey taster who taught me how to drink whiskey (not sure if it was a good thing)
I also met short haired Slash which is a different story completely. That's for another post.
But this pub was a bit of a dive but it was cool which meant you could meet anyone in there. The barmen and women became friends of mine and I regularly go back for a weekend of supping pints. It is my go to place for a session.
The guy that ran the bar was an Irishman from Cork who always wore a paddy hat and he had a great taste in music. He had this playlist that was excellent. All the music I was into but songs that I never heard of. He wasn't afraid to play the less cool music either. But it was clearly a case of his pub, his rules and his music. But the music became a playlist for my time there as I have so many memories that were funny in that pub and I look back at that time with a smile. Every Saturday night we would be there by 7.30pm and stay there until 5am which was closing. From 5am to 8am we would go to a 1970's themed disco in a place called the Keller. And then onto an early house called Barbarossa from 8am to 10am. We would then be just in time for the McDonalds breakfast and go home and go to bed. Super Sunday was 4pm so we would all meet back in the Anglo again for Round 2. Sunday would be more sensible and we would be home by 1am in time for work on Monday.

So that's the back story. The 3 songs from the pub that stick in my mind are

Not Nineteen Forever - The Courteeners

Source
Classic song. I loved the lyrics as I was kinda like the person they sing about back in the day as I was fond of the old drink.

Lyrics
She's had to peel me off the pavement
Trying to insinuate
Sometimes I am in danger of going too far
Said would I like to go for tea and toast?
Get your hand off my thigh
In the car she turned to me and said
"You're not nineteen forever, pull yourselves together
I know it seems strange but things they change
Older woman and a younger man
Both of them doing all they can
Trying to get your attention
All night long asked you once, I asked you twice
Asked you four times if you'd like to dance to that song
Front crawled the crowd down the stairs
And then I followed you out in the rain
Nowhere to be found, never mind
You'll probably never look that pretty again
"You're not nineteen forever, pull yourselves together
I know it seems strange but things they change
Older woman and ever so slightly younger man
God bless the band, they're doing all they can"
"You're not nineteen forever, pull yourselves together
I know it seems strange but things they change
Older woman and ever so slightly younger man
God bless the band, they're doing all they can"
You're not nineteen forever
You're not nineteen forever
You're not nineteen forever
It's not big, you're definitely not clever

Little Black Submarines - The Black Keys

Just love the way this song flows. You need to turn this one up to 11 to appreciate it.
Lyrics
Wake up
You're gonna wake up to nothing
Break up
The break up is coming
And when you're heart is hollow
Another pill to swallow
Shake up
Gotta shake up you're freezin'
Make up
I'm gonna make up my reasons
I used to say I need you
But now I gotta leave you
Sister, sister what did they do to you?
Sister, sister what did they do to you?
Did they take they try to break
A heart that long?
It's so wrong
Hung up
Got me hung up in draft
Rung up
Got me rung up in bed
You took advantage of
The one who showed you love
Sister, sister what did they do to you?
Sister, sister what did they do to you?
Did they take and try to break
A heart that long?
It's so wrong
So long
So long

Flowers In Your Hair - The Lumineers

Source
Musical snobs may scoff at my choice here but I actually really like the Lumineers. When you take Hey Ho out of it then they are a good outfit and I have liked all their albums since. Plus as I say
Lyrics
When we were younger
We thought everyone was on our side
Then we grew a little
And romanticized the time I saw
Flowers in your hair
See it takes a boy to live
Takes a man to pretend he was there
So then we grew a little
And knew a lot
And now we demonstrated it to the cops
And all the things we said
We were self assured
'Cause it's a long road to wisdom
But it's a short one to being ignored
Be in my eyes
Be in my heart
By in my eyes, eyeyeye
Be in my heart
So now I think that I could love you back
And I hope its not too late
'Cause you're so attractive
And the way you move
I won't close my eyes
'Cause it takes a man to live
It takes a woman to make him compromise
So be in my eyes
Be in my heart
Be in my eyes, eyeyeye
Be in my heart

Nope, as @blanchy says, totally up to yourself, it just has to have three songs, which can be links to youtube, 3speak or wherever and a little preamble for each song is nice, but not required either. Great to have you onboard now too 🤟

It's funny you should mention that about the music bringing you back to a specific time. I find the same thing with sounds, smells etc that they can transport you back to a time and place and I recently learned that this is no mistake and the brain uses the senses for remembering or for storing our memories using electrical signals and synapses snapping so to speak. In fact if you really want something to stay in the brain for a long time to come, don't just lock it in with vision alone, instead include as many of the senses as you can, like smell, touch, sound etc and that memory gets locked in more securely and can be recalled at a later stage in more than one way. This can be particularly important if we ever have issues with dementia, alzeimers etc in later life. Having more than one neural way to access what is in our brains could be the difference between being able to remember something we want to remember or that our loved ones want us to remember and not.... Right, now that the tangent is done, onto the tunes...

Great tunes again, but what I especially like is the back story and the crack at the Anglo and the characters that you met. Good one about drinking Whiskey, I only learned how to drink it right myself in recent years, and though I rarely drink it, I enjoy it when I do. I find it a great drink to finish the night with, mind you there was no end to those nights you had in 2013! You'd wonder how we did it when we were young, serious stamina in those days!

Little Black Submarines - The Black Keys - Funnuly enough the front man here reminds me of my singer sing writer friend Danny and guess where he lives and plays? Yep Germany! Danny O'Connor is his name, I must see can I get him on here for a few tunes some time.
