We need more Nirvanas!

Ran across this in a random dump on Imgur:

Wanted to ask you guys about this. What do you think of this? Is American Idol and The Voice ruining musicians? Should we be doing more shitty music for the sake of finding the next big thing?

Personally, I'm kind of inclined to agree with Dave. Back in 2009, I auditioned for America's Got Talent. Got up ridiculously early, went downtown on a "freeze your balls off" kind of morning in Minneapolis, stood around for a few hours, went into the audition room, and...

I didn't hear anything after that. I agonized over this. Why wasn't I selected to move forward? I wasn't so terrible that I'd be mocked, but I also wasn't interesting enough to make it on the show. Not ugly enough, not hot enough, just...completely mediocre.

And that cut to the bone. I felt...more worthless than I already felt. I was already dealing with the insecurity of being unable to find a job in the middle of a recession, mounting debt, living below the poverty line, and adding this on top of things did not help me at all.

Honestly, my singing ability has probably suffered as a result. I constantly criticize myself, though that's kind of a constant, so it's not that far off. But my I don't have the creativity I used to. I constantly knock myself down a peg, telling myself that my ideas are dumb ideas. Maybe I should just get out there and just suck some more. Maybe that might actually help me get over this slump...

What do you guys think? Should we be getting out there and doing more stuff like what Grohl describes?

Thanks for the industry trend. I'll start raising my prices on old fucking drum sets.
