The goodness of the Gooseberry

(Edited)

Yesterday, I got a dozen or so of Gooseberry. Hereabouts, it is known as Nellikka in Malayalam and Amla in Hindi.

As you all probably know, Gooseberry is very rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It is used in ayurvedic medicines. The most popular is 'Chyavanprash' which is given to children so that they remain healthy and also gain immunity besides gaining a good appetite.

The gooseberry is good for both skin and hair. It is used in making hair tonic. The berry is sliced and stored in jars with jaggery and the jar is shut tight. It is not opened for about a month or so. The tonic that is extracted is given to people who have hair-related problems such as thinning, greying, etc.

Yet another and important benefit of the berry is that it helps regulate blood sugar. Just eat one berry a day and it will help you with diabetes. Please do consult your doctor if you are taking medicines.

Those who love pickles will also not be disappointed because the berry can be pickled.

  • One way is to put the berries as a whole in a jar and sprinkle salt and pour vinegar and add some bird's eye chilly too. Store it tight until a month or so.

  • Take a wok, stir fry the berry in hot oil for a few minutes. Switch off and let it cool. Slice it and add red chilly powder and salt. It will stay good for a week outside the refrigerator.

Gooseberry is used in preparing homemade wines. I have not tried it but do know that many people in my state do make it on a yearly basis.

One must remember that this berry should not be consumed in huge quantities as it may cause side effects. It is available in the form of powder and juice.

Ooh I love fresh gooseberries, never knew how to pickle them that is so interesting and easy to do @sayee

During the hot summer months, pulp them slightly and pour over ice-cream, so refreshing!

Those have got to be the largest gooseberries I've ever seen (top photo)!
Cool to know they are medicinal though.
