February 20, 2020 - Skipper's 4th day.

Such days I want every day

A day that went wonderfully smoothly. The two ladies really seem to accept Skipper more in their midst and apart from a small growl I have not heard any discordant word from the ladies. Skipper therefore behaves nicely towards them. He approaches them carefully and if they indicate they do not agree, he neatly returns.

At the moment I confirm this behavior of him very positively because it is only good for the peace in the pack. You should not misunderstand this as being allowed to do nothing. He likes me very much within the limits. But it's a simple fact that I can push my way into the ladies, only with that I don't get a pack that can only be stable when I have to leave.

Right now, Skipper has to learn his place.

Then they could fight when I am not there, and I don't want to experience that. So right now Skipper still has to learn and discover where his place in the pack is, and unfortunately for him the ladies say that it is at the bottom, and that he has to behave according to their laws and rules. Whatever they may be.

Somewhat surprising.

Lana seems to be a little more indulgent than Myla ... and that somewhat surprises me. I have had several moments that I thought Lana wanted to play with him. To still shrink back at the last minute. I sometimes wonder what is going on in their heads. After all, it is not natural what we do. Normally in the wild, a dog would choose the pack and be accepted or not. In this situation we determine for the dogs that they must live together and we also want to see that they become friends in no time because that would be much easier for us.

But that is why I love dogs.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way ... they are animals with their own feeling and character. And that is precisely the reason why I love dogs so much. They are all different, and they really have their own characters. It is up to us as owner / owners to steer this all in the right direction and to create a safe environment and feeling for all different dogs. And that works quite well at the moment.

As I said before, rest in the first few weeks is important. Let them get to know each other, no wild games as long as they don't know each other. Trust must be able to grow gradually. Skipper is also not a puppy, he is a teenager of 1 year and that can mean that he is sometimes corrected a bit harsh by the ladies if he thinks he behaves too cheekily.

But then ... what did Skipper experience?

Started training ... no pulling.

Of course he went for a walk, and during the walks that are still fairly short for him, we started training so as not to pull the line. Very nice if you have a dog with its size and weight that does not pull. So that's a point I picked up right away, and if he can keep his focus on it, he'll manage to do what I want from him. He doesn't always have to walk tight next to me, but I don't want my dog to walk me instead of me walking him. For me too, searching is what Skipper likes so that I can adjust his training accordingly, and I also have to find out how long he can keep his focus on training. Because if he can't keep his focus on it, then he won't take anything anymore. These are now important points to find out.

German Shepherds like to be challenged

In addition, he did a thinking game within a few times to provide him with a spiritual challenge. German Shepherd are intelligent dogs that like to be busy and want to learn and discover things. You have to give them that chance too. If you don't do it, you'll soon have a dog who has taught himself the wrong things.

Processing the impressions.

After his focus there also seemed to be totally lost, I put the game aside and he could then lie down and sleep if he wanted to. But at least process the impressions he has nevertheless made. For a dog, every 10 minutes is something new enough to allow him to process it for four hours. And with that, I don't want to say that a dog can't handle much. They can handle much more than people often think, but you do not want to cause irritation in your dog by overloading him with new things one day or in the first week. He must also be given the opportunity to adapt to his new situation and, above all, to develop a routine in it.

Playtime.

He likes the thinking games to do, and that is great to see. The enthusiasm with which he undertakes everything. To also do something about his energy that he has to get rid of, he then went outside to play with me and a ball. And soon (tomorrow), playing with one of the girls will be introduced.

Sleeping and eating.

After playing wild with a ball for half an hour it was time to walk a short round and after that Skipper went to sleep until my partner came home. Then it's also time for the meal that he looks forward to every day. Sir certainly has a healthy appetite.

Lying down next to Lana

And then after dinner it is a wonderful dog that just lays down nice and quiet ... and again next to Lana in a wonderfully soft spot.

If all days can expire like this, then I sign for it. From here I would say it can only get better.

And for everybody who's concerned about the ladies ... I mainly write about what Skipper did. But don't worry. Myla and Lana all get to do the same, so my days are pretty busy at the moment with being busy with dogs to keep them all busy, and creating a sense of togetherness in the dogs.

Paws from Myla, Lana & Skipper!
