Paseo por Bioparque Temaiken - El Avestruz / Temaiken Biopark Tour - The Ostrich

En una de las viajes que fuimos a Buenos Aires visitamos el Bioparque Temaiken. Allí pude tomas estas fotografías del ave más grande del mundo; el avestruz, la cual es originaria del continente africano.

On one of the trips we went to Buenos Aires we visited Temaiken Biopark. There I could take these photographs of the largest bird in the world; the ostrich, which is native to the African continent.

These birds have sexual dimorphism, (differentiation between male and female, since they have different body characteristics). One of the differences is found in size, being the smallest females (they can measure from 1.70 to 1.90 meters and weigh up to 110 kilos) than the males (they can measure from 2.10 to 2.75 meters and can weigh 150 kilos). Another difference is found in the color of the plumage; in the males we can observe a plumage of several colors, in which the black for the body and the white for the tail and the primary feathers predominate. In contrast, females have only one color, gray brown.

Estas aves tienen una cabeza pequeña en relación a su cuerpo (lleno de plumas), unos grandes ojos (como podrán observar en las fotos), con un largo cuello con pequeños canutos (especie de pelitos). Es dueña de una de las patas más fuertes y poderosas del reino animal, lo que le permite llegar una velocidad máxima de alrededor de los 70 km./hs. y sostener durante períodos medianamente prolongados una velocidad de 50 km./hs.

These birds have a small head in relation to their body (full of feathers), large eyes (as you can see in the photos), with a long neck with small pointers (kind of hairs). It owns one of the strongest and most powerful legs of the animal kingdom, which allows it to reach a maximum speed of around 70 km / h. and sustain a speed of 50 km / h for moderately prolonged periods.

En sus patas podemos observar dos dedos en uno de los cuales tiene una garra que le permite no solo aferrarse mejor al suelo durante la carrera, sino también como una arma de defensa cuando se encuentran en peligro.

On its legs we can see two fingers on one of which has a claw that allows it to not only cling better to the ground during the race, but also as a defense weapon when they are in danger.

Su alimentación es variada, comen desde pasto, semillas, hojas, frutas, raíces, insectos y pequeños mamíferos. Su dieta es muy rica en hojas de plantas suculentas lo cual les permite obtener el agua necesaria y no deshidratarse ante las extremas temperaturas.

Their food is varied, they eat from grass, seeds, leaves, fruits, roots, insects and small mammals. Their diet is very rich in leaves of succulent plants which allows them to obtain the necessary water and not to become dehydrated in the extreme temperatures.

En general viven en pequeños grupos, aunque en las estaciones secas podemos encontrar reunidos a cientos ejemplares agrupados alrededor de una fuente de agua.

In general they live in small groups, although in the dry seasons we can find hundreds gathered together around a water source.

Emiten gran variedad de sonidos aunque los más sorprendentes los producen cuando se siente amenazados por un predador o bien el pleno combate. Emiten un sonido muy fuerte y potente que puede compararse con el rugir de un león.

They emit a wide variety of sounds although the most surprising are produced when they feel threatened by a predator or full combat. They emit a very loud and powerful sound that can be compared to the roar of a lion.

En cuanto a la reproducción los machos forman pequeños harenes compuestos por un macho y varias hembras. El nido es construido por el macho haciendo pozos en el suelo con sus poderosas patas, en el cual las hembras pondrán los huevos.

As for reproduction, males form small harems composed of one male and several females. The nest is built by the male making wells on the ground with its powerful legs, in which the females will lay the eggs.

En el momento previo al acto sexual el macho realiza un baile frente a las hembras con las alas abiertas, moviéndolas enérgicamente de una lado para él otro, como así también su cabeza y su cola.

In the moment before the sexual act the male performs a dance in front of the females with open wings, moving them vigorously from one side to the other, as well as his head and tail.

Unos días después del apareamiento las hembras colocan los huevos en el nido. Cada una puede colocar entre 2 y 11 huevos que pueden llegar a pesar cerda de 1,5 kilográmos y 16 centímetros de largo. Son verdaderamente muy grandes, los más grandes del reino animal. Se incuban durante 45 días aproximadamente y la tarea la comparte tanto las hembras como el macho. Muchas veces sucede que el cuerpo de las hembras no llega a cubrir todos los huevos por lo cual terminan apartando del nido los que sobran y terminaran incubando alrededor de 20 huevos.

A few days after mating the females place the eggs in the nest. Each one can place between 2 and 11 eggs that can weigh up to 1.5 kilos and 16 centimeters long. They are truly very large, the largest in the animal kingdom. They incubate for approximately 45 days and the task is shared by both females and males. Many times it happens that the body of the females does not cover all the eggs, so they end up removing the leftover from the nest and end up incubating about 20 eggs.

Al nacer las crías son de color beige con líneas y manchas negras en su cuerpo, dejando el nido alrededor del tercer día del nacimiento (salida del cascaron).

At birth the offspring are beige with black lines and spots on their body, leaving the nest around the third day of birth (hatching).

Generalmente son cuidados por las parejas formando grandes guarderías.

They are generally cared for by couples forming large nurseries.

Si bien esta especie no se encuentra en peligro de extinción, su población se ha reducido en drasticamente.

Although this species is not in danger of extinction, its population has been drastically reduced.
