Neoxian City Photo Challenge - She Will Take It Back

This morning I decided to participate in the #neoxianphotochallenge. If you're interested, check out the post by @neoxiancity, explaining all the rules and whatnot. This weeks's topic is still life.

Living in a concrete jungle, such as Mexico City, one develops an appreciation for nature's struggle against being paved over. This is especially true right now during the rainy season, when everything seems to be growing like crazy where it is left alone a bit.

From my apartment window I have a clear view over an abandoned lot. It became vacant about three years ago, which is sufficient time for an impressive forest to emerge... at least around the are where the concrete was already cracked.

So when I went out to walk my dog today, I kept my eyes peeled for similar examples of nature finding a way, and making a comeback. According to her strategy, she's always moving gradually, but ever so constantly.

At first you may not even notice the few blades of grass sprouting out from a concrete shelf. It looks so cute, you may even just smile at the attempt of something growing in such an unlikely place. (The cacti above are probably growing in a pot, on what I think is a balcony.)

And once it becomes established, it only grows thicker. Like this dense bunch of grasses behind a street sign. Eventually, it'll push teh sign right out, creating a massive hole where it can grow even thicker, attacking the rest of the wall.

In a world where ancient trees are cut down at a breathtaking rate, and whole tracts of land are concreted or asphalted over in mere hours, I like to root for nature, countering all this at her own slow pace. In this image a tree is breaking up the concrete with its roots along the weakest lines.

All photos were taken on the day I posted them, in the San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood of Mexico City, with my Asus Zenfone Max Plus.
