As Jack happily waltzed into the Research Center unnoticed, he carefully watched his mentor, Chief Science Officer Brady, dancing from monitor to monitor, desk to desk, as formulas flashed, and equally danced, across the screen. Whenever the Chief was in this kind of mood, it was because he was working on something exciting. Breaking his silence, Jack yelled out to the Officer, startling him.

Chief! How's it going?!

  • For god's sake, Mr. Steel, must you always sneak up on me like that. One day, my boy, you will be the end of me!

Unless, of course, we all get blown up by a Yamato Warship! Sorry Chief! It was just too tempting. So what's all the excitement about?

  • I'm working on a formula! And I'm quite impressed with myself.

Oh really?! Well, you should be; I've always said you're a genius.

  • Passion, Mr. Steel, not genius! When something gets done with passion, it gets done well; even by the most unlearned amongst us.

So what is it, Chief? Hit me with some of that good geek talk!

  • By all means! Computer, load my ShipMarket files and bring the updated ShipPrice Formula on screen...

monitorshipprice.jpg

  • Isn't she a beauty, Mr. Steel!

You don't actually expect me to understand any of that, do you?!

  • Of course not!

Actually, wait a minute, I do know what SHIP is!

  • At the very least, Admiral. You would have me worry if you didn't get that far.

Very funny. So what's the RC? Take me through this slowly, I'm no scientist.

  • Oh, it's nothing fancy, son. The formula will simply help the Genesis Starfleet get a handle on this new galactic market. Things are volatile at the moment, but eventually an overall price system will form on the galactic blockchain; once more colonies come on board. So, RC = Resource Cost. Computer, load RC Formula...

monitorrcformula.jpg

Okay, I'm with you, Chief. Those are the Minerals we produce. But what's with the zero point zero zero business.

  • Well, I have reasoned that the lowest resource of value that we produce is Coal. Hence, I have assigned it the lowest value in STARDUST. It's true that the galactic blockchain can calculate to the Startoshi, which is 0.00000001 STARDUST, but all of the colonies use a 3 decimal place system. This was adopted from our many years of using STEEM as the universal galactic currency. And it actually works fine, as placing the value of Coal at 0.00000001 STARDUST would be useless.

So if I get where you're going with this, the building of a ship costs a certain amount of STARDUST based on how many resources are needed to build it.

  • Precisely, my boy, precisely! Now that wasn't so painful, was it!

Go on. What's TC?

  • That would be Time Cost. Computer, load the TC Formula please...

monitortcformula.jpg

  • Obviously, the old adage "Time is Money" lives on. As you know, some ships take longer to build than others, and this changes the value depending on how long it takes to be completed. Again, I have used the smallest unit of STARDUST to give a value in minutes.

This means a Dreadnought is going to be fairly expensive considering it takes 5 days to build.

  • Exactly! And that's the way it should be.

You're not losing me yet, Chief! You're going to have to do better than that to confuse me.

  • Don't worry, we'll get there. The MF is simply the universal Market Fee of 8%. Nothing to explain there. This next one remains a little tricky, but I'm happy enough to leave it as it is for the moment - BPR is the Blueprint Rarity value. Computer, load the BPR Formula...

monitorbpr.jpg

Now you lost me, Chief!

  • I knew I would! I had to consider the rarity of certain blueprints across our Starfleet. How could we possibly give a Corvette Crocus, which can be produced by all of our Starbases with a Phase 14 Shipyard, the same value as a Corvette Petunia, which can only be produced by 2 of our colonies, at the moment.

Good point, Chief. I don't suppose it would make sense to have those two ships with the same value. So how did you solve the problem?

  • The Formula takes into consideration the number of Starbases that have a particular Blueprint; hence BP is the number of Blueprints, while -PL is the negative total number of planets we have, which gives us a % that decreases in value when the number of Blueprints increases throughout the Starfleet. The +1 allows for the Formula to express a positive percentage from 100-0%.

Okay, now my brain is fried! Let's just say that you've figured out a way to make a Corvette Petunia have more valuable than a Corvette Crocus.

  • And don't forget the Corvette Najtar!

Corvette Najtar?!

  • Have you not been informed?! Not only have we captured this Blueprint with our explorations, but I've also been able to purchase it from the market. Computer, load the Corvette Najtar Blueprint...

monitornajtar.jpg

Wow! I'm not familiar with this, Chief! Tell me what you know!

  • The Corvette Najtar is a Laser Class battleship. They were first seen in the battle of Nobunaga, when the notorious Flesssk people used them to attack the Ganja people. The troops of the Ganja Empire were caught off guard by a fleet of thousands of these Corvette Najtar, while the Ganja ruling class celebrated one of their excessive orgies, for which they are well known. It's a very powerful Corvette, in that it has an impressive ability to destroy Shields much more quickly than the Corvette Crocus or a Corvette Petunia.

For example?

  • Well, although all three ships have a fire power of 2, the Crocus creates a Shield damage of 2, while the Petunia creates a Shield damage of 4, and ready for this, the Najtar creates a Shield damage of 8!

I didn't know this, Chief! Now I understand why you needed to add this Rarity factor to the ship prices. I'll need to talk with our Chief Security Officer, and see about building some of these for our fleet. But you haven't finished yet, Chief; what's with the 100 at the end of the Formula?

  • Oh, that's the Markup Value.

You've placed a 100% Markup Value on the ships we produce?

  • No, a 100x value, which I can easily adjust as I watch the market fluctuate.

Well, I see you've thought this through carefully! My compliments!

  • Thank you, Admiral Steel! As I said before, it's all about passion! How about a cup of green tea?! I have some more ideas to share with you!

You know I never turn down a good cup of green tea and some fantastic geek talk, Chief!
