I am working to try and get my things upgraded, it is still going pretty slow though. I wish there was a way to speed things up a bit it would be great! Still enjoying the game so far even though it's going very slow at the moment. I have not played in a while but I am back to play more and hopefully I can start finding planets soon!

You can buy explorer from market if your shipyard/research is not ready for producing explorers.
This will require stardust, no? I do not have any of that. Is it available for purchase on steemengine by chance?
It is planned on steem-engine shortly, but yo can buy in game at "https://stardust.nextcolony.io/" and in game discord with other players.
There is various other clients that help a lot to speed things up:
nc-client.jarunik.com is one, the other one is a tool by @cryptoriddler
