Eve Online | The Good Old Days Of POS Bashing

when I was playing Eve Online quite a few years ago I was in an alliance called Z.E.R.G. True to their name they were a very rapid growing alliance with dreams of one day moving down to 0.0 space and taking some space for ourselves. Long before such things could become a reality we needed income sources.

Background Information

While most of the members in the alliance at the time was not into pvp they slowly had divisions growing out that enjoyed the thrill and could afford to take personal losses that fun brought. We were a rather poor alliance so replacing ship losses were not really a thing. To solve that and move onto to bigger things they started doing a lot of POS (player-owned starbase) bashing (attacking and destroying).

It’s called bashing as you need to show up with hopefully a large force and attack a POS until you reinforce it. You then need come back another day when it’s no longer in reinforce mode and take it out.

Sometimes they get a large turnout and other times not so much. Since you are not getting any amazing kill mails just for putting in into reinforcement even fewer players wanted to do that. Often times we would show up with a not so large fleet and spend hours bashing with our weapons of lasers, missiles, bullets, and drones until it was time to go home.

Often people would leave during the middle of such an operation. More times than not after a while communication went from be quite and take orders to from the FC (fleet commander) to trashing talking and a night of drinking.

The people who lead these attacks put in some time researching the best targets in our area. Eve Online is one where one day your alliance rose to power after years of hard work. Another day it’s wipe out and everyone is pillaging anything they can find and things get lost and left behind.

Many of the POS in our area were controlled by alliances that had since moved on or fallen. While they were moon mining and more than covering costs of fuel (which is why we wanted them). They were also usually not worth that alliance time to get a defense fleet up there unless they were really bored. It was just free money until someone with some balls would show up and take it.

Most of the time we would show up. While attacking that alliance would have an alt character log in and start talking trash in local about how they will come and murder us and kill our alliance. It was almost always just talk. The target we selected we know had a long time ago moved out of the region and where far too busy trying keep what they had elsewhere that had a much higher value. Any POS in the area that we know had a higher value (used for logistics or a fallback point) we left alone.
For us the biggest danger where people showing up just looking to pick off our bashing fleet to get some battleship to kill mails and then run away. This usually happened when what was left of the fleet was returning home. By that time everyone in the area where well area we had been bashing a POS for hours. Many people by the end log off for the night wherever or went home early.

A Battle

One night we show up to a very under-gunned POS that needed to be put into reinforcement. As such we had an unusually small turn out. We just had a string of POS bashing all week and they can get rather boring unless people are showing up to defend.

It did not take too long before we were just talking away and having our own fun in Ventrilo or whatever we were using at the time. After quite a few hours and people falling asleep, the POS was finally in reinforce. It was time to go back home to Ami.

I believe at the time we were working in Jeni system so we would have jumped into Nebian next. After that, it was to Fensi and then home. The scouts jumping ahead did not notice any signs of any trouble. Just a single ship at the time.

Battle report

As soon as we jumped into Fensi a small fleet showed up as well. We all were bored and thought why not there might be some fun to be had.

I was one of the first to be attacked and that is when we realized it was a trap. The ships that greeted us had a heavy focus on using a capacitor (energy) neutralizing weapons. Before I could even get back to the gate to wait out my combat timer to jump I was out of the capacitor.

Since I fly Amarr and user laser weapons I started to turn them off as I needed everything I had to go into my mircowarpdrive in hopes of making it back to the gate. I was dead in the water long before then and they had enough neutralizers to ensure I was taken out of the fight rather quickly even with me using cap boosters.

That is when one of the ships lit off a cynosural field which acts as a beacon for some of the largest ships in the game to be able to jump into that system if they are within range. They brought in a couple of carriers some of which I recall did not even have time to get a lock before we all were dead.

Those that could get out surly did and the remaining of us went down without much of a fight. At least we had some thrills that night even though it was at our own expense.

Later on that week another fleet of our own showed up and took out the POS. So it was at least worth it in the end. I myself was not going be on when it was time to take it out so I did not get to join in.

Kill mails

I did, however, the next day join in on an operation to take out another POS that was just coming out of reinforcement. Sometimes you get to show up just for the glory other times you went down in flames and had nothing that day to show for it.

End

Member chart data

Z.E.R.G itself went off to attack and destroy quite a number of POS. Over time we got it in our minds we were ready to move down to 0.0 and try and build up even further from there. That did not end so well and the alliance ended up falling part shortly after most of the people who were willing to go down and take a high risk had their ships transported. Overtime all POS they had owned fell and were taken by others.

This while rather time frame I was with them was some of the best times I had in the game. Lots of fleet roams that I got to join and I could go off on my own whenever I wanted. They were also located out of Ami which one on the border to a high-security system so resupplying and selling was a breeze.

Eve was one of these games that I had wished I had gotten into... It really sounded quite epic!

I think it would be fair to say it was 95% boredom and 5% you needed a new pair of shorts. The perfect plan and months of building could unravel in just minutes. The game was filled with politics, spying, stealing, other stuff.

Flying with the right people made the difference between being able to enjoy the game or spending a month in a station being camped because a corp mate gave someone in the middle finger in local demanded “respect.”

You could go mining for hours in high sec and then suddenly a suicided ganker shows up and blows up your ship before the police could show up to stop that person. So you were always on the lookout for someone to kill you no matter if you were in high sec, low sec, null, or wormhole space. Anything and everything wanted to get on you kill mail!

It was fun for sure just don't operate expensive ships at 3am and get killed due to not paying attention! It was a game that took a fair amount of time as well. Glad I played it while I was younger I just don't have that kind of time these days.

Ah the good ol eve days. Haven't played for a long time, gave it up. Had lots of fun though!
My favourite was baiting them with big ships and then my allies showing up to help take them out. Rokh was always my favourite ship. :D

I had a friend who would bait in low sec with a dreadnought and play station games. He would put smaller guns on it so when people thought they could just avoid gun fire of a dreadnought’s massive guns they were wrong! He also got hot dropped and bump a few times. He never cared much had a stack of them ready to go 😂.

I myself had a Maller that was more like a flying brick with how much plating and armor that thing was loaded down with. A clear bait ship that than had two scorpions jump in to ECM jam whatever showed up.

Some of the more interesting fights I was in had been people baiting in expensive toys. They look real pretty when they blow up!

Sounds like you had fun playing Eve Online.
I played for awhile but never got into an alliance, which is probably why I only played it briefly.
It was an awesome game, but starting out it was a little overwhelming as it is a very in-depth game.
Also flying around you need to watch your back or you end up star dust.
I remember whilst doing research on YouTube to best setup my ibis I saw a post about this guy who was in an alliance and somehow he ended up with all the keys to everything and after having a fight with someone else high up in the alliance he decided to sell everyone’s ships and everything else in the alliance. It was the biggest alliance at the time and after that it fell apart.
It’s one of those games though if you like to be in control of everything and have a million things you can do . It would never get old . I think this game will be around for awhile to come .

Your post was a great read . Thanks for sharing,

Have an awesome day!

alliance, which is probably why I only played it briefly

While you can try and play as a lone wolf in this game it really is about finding some people you can almost trust and having fun with them. There used to be a while ago public roams, a place called brave newbies, and stuff like Eve Academy.

I myself for a while was in something called Red vs Blue which are two corporations (Red Federation and Blue Republic)that are in a constant war with each other that anyone can join. They arrange fights with each other and then go out and fight it out. When they are not doing that they team up go on bigger roams or right off people who declare war on each other.

Lots of things out there that just have to be found. When I first started playing I just took the first random corporation invite I got. I stayed with that group for quite a while before I moved on. I made some long term friends there that I still talk to even this day despite the fact none of us play Eve much anymore.

was a little overwhelming

Eve has always had a high learning curve. Over the years they have made it more new player friendly but it is still a challenge. There is a funny chart out there that shows the games learning curve with a cliff and people being pushed off it. This is quite fitting.

The game does require a fair bit of planning. I remember I use to make yearlong skill plans and slowly work my up into the bigger ships. Sure you could rush into say a battleship but you would lack the in- skills to have decent mods on that ship. So planning has always been key.

It was the biggest alliance at the time and after that it fell apart

There has been quite a few alliance over the years that have been “bob” due to a higher ranking member being turned or trying take off with everything. A decent alliance will have good internal controls and be run more like a business tends to be how most are set up.

I have even seen alliances have accountants do their bookkeeping, hire external auditors in-game, have a 2-week mandatory vacation from playing, perform background checks on new members and a bunch of other stuff. Even then it might not be enough if a player really wants to do something bad and they simply put in the time to earn trust.

I’ve seen it all. From a friend of a number of years backstabbing his friends and stealing everything to the alliance being disbanded and robbed.

I think this game will be around for awhile to com

I sure hope so. While I don’t play much these days I do once in a while get in the mood to play for a couple of months. Sometimes it’s all just fun to watch stuff like Alliance Tournament and CCP does have an amazing fanfest as well which I still hope to one day attend the one in Iceland.

They have done a lot over the years to maintain and improve the game. I think the developers have even rewritten the entire game more than once to ensure it could be something they can keep improving and keep around for quite a while. Some of those older games became quite the mess code-wise to try and keep going making it cost to much time and money.

Outside of it taking a lot of time with skills taking real time to train is was one amazing adventure I went on for a number of years.

So many different roles a single person could be. From someone spamming in trade hubs double your money scams to people leading alliances of thousands of players into massive battles.

I myself was a care bear for a while running high security missions attacking npcs.

I got into piracy for a while and hunted in small groups ships that where flying around in low security.

Now days when I do play once in a while I tend to live in Wormholes. My last place my group was occupying had our citadel blown up that we had placed inside it to make a base out of it. The guy who was supposed to keep an eye on it since he still wanted to play forgot to mention he was taking a break. A group of mercenaries where hired by someone who wanted to move into that wormhole to blow it up. They had a nice payday I’m sure from us being lazy!

I’ve known people who do nothing but manufacture ships and fittings and pay transporting corporations to haul their stuff to different trade hubs so they can sell. While others did nothing but drink in real life and mine asteroids all day long lol.

There are so many stories and crazy things that have gone down in that game. From someone setting up a bank and running off with the money. Along with player meetups at different places around the world.

It’s easy to become lost for a while when you are new. Sometimes you just got go with what you can and see where it takes you while you work things out.

Lots of people always looking for new players. I started off by just accepting one of the random invites I got into a corporation to get out of the starting NPC one.

Oh, this doesn't sound like a lone wolf kind of game!

Glad to see you back!!! It has been a while and yikes! Things in life have gotten busy!! Hope all is well with you and thank you for your constant support!

Lone wolfs are some of the best pvpers in that game. They have the skills and spend like a drunk sailor on ships so they can try and solo small fleets of players! Not an easy way to go about it but they can sure have fun.

Thanks for the welcome back. I could use a few dozen cat naps but otherwise I'm good!

I guess when you put it that way, the potential can be good, but, you stand a chance of being annihilated! :)

Trash talking has been on going since the earlier days in gaming. Part of the psy war and strategy. You crack you lose. Well in my high school days when lan gaming was popular. Trash talk sometimes gets out of hand because you are all in one room. Ends up in fist fights.

I'm sure many in this game would end up in fist fights instead of laser and missiles if given the chance! There have been entire alliances that got wipe out due to a single member trash talking the wrong person.
