Hiromi’s Sonicbloom: Hiromi Uehara (piano, synthesizer), David Fiuczynski (electric guitar), Tony Grey (electric bass) and Martin Valihora (drums) playing in Spain (2008). From the album Beyond Standard (2008).

In 2003, David Fiuczynski presented Kif with collaborations from various musicians, especially electric cellist Rufus Cappadocia, frequently using North African scales with percussionist Daniel Sadownik following closely. On each track the duo explores exotic sonorities with creative solos from Fiuczynski, who had already played music from the Middle East and Far East before. Even innocent klezmer melodies become shocking hard rock riffs. Screaming Headless Torsos began playing together again in 2004 and the following year they recorded 2005, in which they not only offer more than they gave ten years earlier in their first work, but also cover new territories. Then came the Live in NewYork & Paris DVD and in 2006 the compilation of great hits Chice Cuts. They were chosen by Downbeat Magazine’s Critics Poll as Rising Star - Jazz electric group.

In 2007 Fiuczynski published an educational DVD and started a short but fruitful collaboration with the young and virtuous Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara. The latter formed the band Hiromi’s Sonicbloom, in which the two giants of their respective instruments are measured. In its recording debut Time Control (2007), the guitarist brings his characteristic sound, enjoys mixing styles, finds in Hiromi a jazz soulmate and helps her achieve her goal of playing fully integrated jazz fusion. In 2008 they released their second and last album Beyond Standard, made up of jazz standards that the band leads to unexpected places in a intelligent and brilliant way.

Also in 2008 Fiuczynski released Kif Express with electric bassist Steve Jenkins and drummer Skoota Warner, with both of whom he had performed extensively in Boston and New York, and alto saxophonist Nikolay Moiseenko as a guest artist, and in which we can listen to rock, funk, hip-hop and electronic music. In 2009 he received the Massachusetts Arts Council Fellow in composition and in 2011 won a Guggenheim Fellowship.

I found Black Cherry Acid Lab hard going. Likable, but hard going.... Kif Express is more my jam.
