Hiromi’s Sonicbloom: Hiromi Uehara (piano, synthesizer), David Fiuczynski (electric guitar), Tony Grey (electric bass) and Martin Valihora (drums) playing in 2008. From the album Time Control (2007).

David Fiuczynski is an American jazz-rock and avant-garde guitarist, and composer who has appeared on nearly hundred albums, either as a leader, member of other groups or studio musician, toured countless times and participated in the world’s most important festivals. He has a prodigious command of his instrument with perfect tone control, unequalled virtuosity and advanced knowledge of harmony. He is defined by critics as an unclassifiable, challenging and rebellious performer, but he describes himself as “a jazz musician who doesn’t want to play just jazz” and in his albums you can hear ingredients from different genres.

His broad and versatile conception of his instrument has led him to collaborate with such disparate musicians as the soul vocal duo Charles & Eddie; Cuban singer, songwriter and record producer Descemer Bueno; rhythm and blues and rap singer, electric bassist and composer Meshell Ndegeocello; alto saxophone, composer and participant in downtown New York cultural scene John Zorn; post-bop trumpeter Jack Walrath; avant-garde and electronic music trumpeter Cuong Vu; jazz keyboardist Don Pullen; psychedelic rock and funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell; jazz electric bassist Marcus Miller; jazz drummers Marc Guiliana (who also backed David Bowie) and Dennis Chambers (who also plays rhythm and blues, funk and jazz fusion); and drummers Steward Copeland (member of the rock group The Police) and Bill Bruford (member of the progressive rock band Yes) among many others.

He is a teacher at Berklee College of Music in Boston and over the last few years has extended the language and technique of the guitar embracing traditions, musical styles and harmonies of other cultures. Fiuczynski uses double neck guitars in which one of them is fretless.

I’ve been listening to Kif Express by David Fiuczynski recently. It’s amazing. Now I’ll have to check out Hiromi’s stuff. Thanks for the article.

I was trying to remember where I came across his music and remembered it was through a Spotify suggestion of Screaming Headless Torsos. If you haven't heard their stuff I'd highly recommend them.
