Keeping Your Pets Entertained Indoors during Fall’s Rainy Days

avatar

Fall is a wonderful season for long walks and foliage photography, especially in the countryside. Nature dresses the scenery with a blend of thrilling colors. Shades of red, orange, yellow, green, and purple become dominant over the vegetation. The first rains of fall also make their appearance to add an even more dramatic effect to the scenery.

We now start spending more time indoors watching the rain through our windows and listening to the tap dancing music of the rain drops. We start feeling a bit lethargic, both us and our fur-babies, but is important to take action and find ways to keep the whole family entertained and moving.

During these rainy days our bored pets often like to get in trouble, and they become very restless, which means that we may end up with a furry ball of hectic energy on our hands if we don’t figure something out.

Luckily, there are many different pet indoor games we can try. That is why today I bring you a few activities that won’t only improve your pets’ mood and keep them entertained, but it will also give you and your family something fun to do indoors on rainy days!

Hide and Seek

Hide and seek is one of the classics and you can play it with both dogs and cats. All you need to do is hide behind a couch, a desk, a door, or anything, really.

If you’re playing with your dog, you’ll want to hide in a different room and call them so they can come and try to find you.

If you’re playing with your cat, they will stalk you, so be alert! You can make the game more interesting to them with tubes and tunnels for cats.

In both cases you want to make sure you don’t pick a spot that’s too easy or too difficult, because you risk your pet getting bored!

Hide the Treat

Pets love their treats, so they’re a great way to engage them in some play time. This is something you can play with cats and dogs alike. This game is just like hide and seek, only this time you’re hiding the treats instead of yourself.

If you’re playing with dogs, make sure the treats have a strong smell so they can find them. You can start by choosing easy enough spots and then make it more difficult for your dog as you go along. If you want to use a toy instead, consider a treats puzzle.

If you’re playing with cats, smelly treats will also do the trick. What you want to do, is place them in your cat’s favorite spots around the house, such as scratching posts, behind curtains, or under the couch. Or you can try cat treat dispenser toys instead.

Fetch

If you have room indoors, you can always entertain your pets with a good old game of fetch.

If you’re playing with dogs, fetch is as easy as grabbing your dog’s favorite throwing ball or chew toy and encouraging that naturally playful attitude they have.

If you’re playing with a cat, it can be tricky at first. They won’t naturally pick up on it, but they can definitely learn how to play. Teaching them is as simple as tossing one of their favorite toys, waiting for them to pick it up, calling their name and taking the toy from them. Repeat that until they get the hang of it. If it’s the first time you’re attempting this, spraying their toys with catnip will ease the learning process.

Tug Of War

Tug of war is another classic way of engaging your pets, whether they’re cats or dogs, in some exercise and fun.

If you’re playing with dogs, all you need is a toy that’s long enough for you to keep your hands at a safe distance while you’re playing. Tug of war is a great way for you to bond with your dog and also get them to exercise. Just remember, dogs with aggression issues shouldn’t play this!

If you are playing with cats, all you need is to get a string or one of their favorite toys and try to take it from them. Instinctively, they will start a tug of war with you. Don’t be too rough, they’re not as playful as dogs, but they do like a challenge.
